The funniest part of reading reception to Avowed is seeing people who normally love Bioware/Obsidian slop getting disappointed because the companions on display are all so vapid and boring they can't even be bothered to lie about how good they are. I'm sure the absence of romance plays a factor here as well, which surprises me given Obsidian knows that sells among their own. That pink roastie has a human husband, by the way, as if anyone doubted it wasn't a fetish.

You can make slight tweaks to this, but it's Peak Companion Archetype. A solid 95% of top non-coomer companions in RPGs will fall into this category.

I think this is the new leftist "meta" when it comes to storytelling. Obsidian opted out of doing it with Outer Worlds too, and the Hogwarts Legacy developers told everyone the lack of romances was a deliberate design choice.

Now, this could all be excuses to hide the fact they ran out of time to implement them, but I think something else is going on. They're likely all afraid of stepping on the toes of some liberal protected class, to the point they assume it's safer to not include romanceable NPCs at all.

Technically, only the first one is romantic, the rest never even mention flirt or sex. Sure, the characters are sexy - it's Asian gacha, you can not sell ugly characters, but it's not "sex in games".

Still, one of the first questions to every new RPG with companions (and even without) is about romances. Not sure who participated in the survey for that presentation.

My two cents regarding the "romance" stuff on modern RPGs, I believe this is simply the Western devs lashing out in a tantrum about the fact that when given a romance choice, the vast majority of players always pick the good-looking companions over their queerfreak self-inserts.

If we don't want to romance their monstrosities, then we're not allowed to romance anyone, apparently.
