What RPGs have smell mechanics?
What RPGs have smell mechanics?
The only ones I am aware of are FF11 and the prototype for Monster Hunter World (the T-rex would begin following the player's scent/path taken after losing track of him visually).

Not sure if it was a mechanic or not, but Orc Dogs and other enemies in Gothic 1 did a sniffing animation and, in the case of Orc Dogs, they would track me for very long distances (slowly stalking behind) that I saw.
Not a game in and of itself but a mod, but I recall there being a mod for Skyrim with a very long name that added mechanics to werewolves, werebears and some sort of were-lizard like climbing trees, digging (in the case of the lizard) and there was a wind and scent mechanic that the author was very proud to have made. I cannot find it from my search, but I am 100% sure it was not the most pushed by sarch engines one (called Moonlight Tales). It was somewhat niche but I recall it being on nexus.
Edit: Found it! Took me a while, but it is this mod called Nature of the Beast (though it is not the name I know it for, so I am guessing it was revisioned multiple times, the look of the mod page is also very different from what I remember where, instead, the "lizard" was featured multiple times)

This is what it says about the scent mechanic
I recall something also being said for a mechanic Splinter Cell added, but I am not sure the mechanic I recall was related to smell.

Pantheon (MMO) implemented smell as a mechanic for mob detection.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ February 9th, 2025, 21:40The only ones I am aware of are FF11 and the prototype for Monster Hunter World (the T-rex would begin following the player's scent/path taken after losing track of him visually).
Not aware of any RPGs per se, but I know Half-Life 1 did have a smell mechanic, which was basically a variant of the sound propagation system, Discword Noir had smells as "items" you could use to solve the puzzles, and more recently Gloomwood gives you the option to lure the canine enemies via smell.
Drakensang: Rotten stink is a negative Status Effect lowering Charisma. It can only be removed with Elven Bath Herbs.
Some TTRPGs have perception-based abilities that would include smell.
