Tangerine made a post about Detect Alignment viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3386-detect-alignme ... -in-a-game
and reading through it, it reminded me of how I was occasionally spamming similar spells to "catch" any secrets that the game might have had lying around, and hoarding scrolls "just in case", yet I never came around to using them after tiring myself of finding nothing.
Are there any games that have some hidden characters, items, or even quests that can be discovered by using these sorts of spell?
One game that I recall where it was useful (Detect Life) is Oblivion during the Mages Guild questline for example, where the two mage friends play tricks on another mage, something that comes up again once Mannimarco visits the place.
Another that is, though, not spell-based is for Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale where some hiding places become apparent.

Bethesda is too afraid of people missing content so they never do anything with detection spells and removed like half of them
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

I thought the clairvoyance spell was a neat idea. Especially if you want to play without markers.Vergil wrote: β January 25th, 2025, 21:20Bethesda is too afraid of people missing content so they never do anything with detection spells and removed like half of them
That is true, though it was almost pointless in Skyrim that I recall as the compass things (black bar at the top) I remember I had to disable them through .ini editing outside of the game to make them go away. Did they ever add an option to do that while in-game?Oyster Sauce wrote: β January 25th, 2025, 21:23I thought the clairvoyance spell was a neat idea. Being able to reveal hidden is important for one segment of IWD unless you want to get backstabbed.
Perception in MM6/7/8 is a handy convenience for revealing secrets and traps also lets characters dodge trapped chests when they go off, but there's no way everyone is going to learn it.
In general being able to reveal hidden enemies in Underrail is helpful and If you ****** off the faceless, being able to reveal them in the deep caverns will be very helpful, otherwise...have fun.

The Bard's Tale and similar games have areas where seeing through invisibility and other navigation spells are helpful.
Good thing there's no way to turn markers off or quests that take advantage of the spell!Oyster Sauce wrote: β January 25th, 2025, 21:23I thought the clairvoyance spell was a neat idea. These mechanics work best when they're exclusive otherwise they feel mundane. BG3 chickened out with the amulet.
To be fair, mages get far too much utility in d&d. Arcanum is much better wrt design in this regard.

Aside from the admission into the college, that I recall Scratch that, not even the college entrance test has Clairvoyance in the listVergil wrote: β January 25th, 2025, 21:48Good thing there's no way to turn markers off or quests that take advantage of the spell!Oyster Sauce wrote: β January 25th, 2025, 21:23I thought the clairvoyance spell was a neat idea. Every time I feel like replaying Skyrim, something comes up to remind me just how much it is missing in detailBefore entering the College, the gatekeeper, Faralda, will wish to see a demonstration of the Dragonborn's magical powers. She requests to see a spell appropriate for the Dragonborn's level before gaining passage. These spells include:
Firebolt
Fear
Fury
Magelight
Healing Hands
Conjure Flame Atronach
Conjure Familiar
Fireball

see invis negates some buffs like that half invis thing in some dnd games
I have never heard of half-invisibility, is it something like Mirror Image or some transparency spell? Whatever the case it is a good mechanic to know, thank you for sharing! I love when spells interact creatively with each other.asf wrote: β January 25th, 2025, 22:03see invis negates some buffs like that half invis thing in some dnd games

Some little quests and secrets in ATOM games can't be done without mushroom vision. Divinity games also have that.
Personally I hate all those true vision mechanics. They remind me of witcher sense and similar stuff and you are forced to use it on everything all the time to not feel blind-sighted. Relying on detective work and subtle hints as an alternative is more interesting and rewarding.

Bloodlines has Auspex and it's not that useful. In Dominions, invisibility and true sight play a major role.

Here is a good one.
In Wasteland 2 one of the first quests has you travel to a location called Radio Tower to look for a missing ranger. Its a run of the mill location with weak enemies - some frogs, couple of robots and some lame raiders.
BUT
IF one of your characters has high enough perception (6 i think) you can find a hidden cave filled with honey badgers, one of the toughest animal mobs the game has, which if killed give great xp rewards).
When i accidentally discovered it i thought it was very cool.
