The game is gorgeous and authentic to the historical setting. It's a big ******* stretch to equate KCD with DEIslop just because it has a ****** in it. Most of the top RPGs that all the chuddies love to dickride in unison have ******* in them. You can cope about it being fantasy, science-fiction, different world, but the same logic applies. The devs didn't have to put ******* into those games. Does that also make them DEIslop with your logic?

No matter how you try to justify it, a Malian in 15th century Bohemia makes absolutely no sense. An Ethiopian might have been explainable. An Arab or a Persian, sure. But a Malian? Absolutely not.

The manners at court are excessively theatrical. People strip naked in front of the sultan to show their humility, throw themselves to the ground, pour ash over their heads. Malian manners would have been considered barbaric in both the Arabic and the European world.

The most alienating event Battuta describes is when the Malian sultan welcomes a neighboring tribe of pagan cannibals. They have a gold mine and trade frequently with Mali. The sultan gives them a slavegirl, and they proceed to butcher and eat her.

This is, according to Battuta, a regular occurence, and nobody at the Malian court seems to mind. The cannibals are treated as equal trading partners, and selling them slaves in the full knowledge they will be eaten is perfectly fine.

Even if we assume that parts of his account are embellished, it does not paint a picture of a society of scholars and doctors. While the Malians were part of the Islamic world, they were considered exotic and curious by other Muslim peoples, their manners alien.

And the Malians themselves were perfectly content with keeping their local traditions while also adopting Islam as their religion. We know many travelers from the Latin and Arabic worlds, but none from Mali. No Marco Polo, no Ibn Battuta. Only Mansa Musa who went to Mecca & back.

Therefore it is quite easy to conclude that they didn't travel much. They didn't go on expeditions to far-off countries, and didn't import foreign goods and ideas, unlike the European and Middle Eastern spheres. And there is good reason for this: their geography.

Mali is a kingdom south of the Sahara. Trade routes across it existed and were established, but it's still a harsh and arduous way. Travel across land was slow and required preparation even in temperate regions. The Sahara is a natural border that discourages travel.

To get to Bohemia, a Malian would have to first cross the Sahara into North Africa, then take a ship across the Mediterranean - either to Spain or Italy or Byzantium. From there, he'd have to take the land route to Bohemia. It's very unlikely that anyone from Mali did that.

Is it plausible that a foreigner could appear in medieval Bohemia? Of course. A Muslim scholar? Yes, it's possible. An Arab, perhaps, a Berber, or maybe a Persian. A black man? Sure, from Ethiopia - a Christian country at the time, and much better geography for traveling.

But a Malian? It's one of the unlikeliest places for a traveler to Bohemia to originate from. There's a dozen other places that would have made more sense. Andalusia, Arabia, Persia, Ethiopia. Even a Mongol would be more likely! But Mali? One of the LEAST likely places.

So one has to question why a Malian in particular was chosen. Why not an Arab if they wanted an Islamic scholar? Why not an Ethiopian if they wanted a black man? Well... Mali is a west African kingdom. And west Africans are the ancestors of African Americans.

Yep. It's a DEI insert. No other explanation satisfies, because for every possible reason to include this character, a much less jarring alternative exists. But there is no alternative for African American representation. And that's very likely this character's purpose.

Let's take a look at how he is presented, too. He wears a lot of bling - which one might think fits to the Malians, famed for their gold. But they were also known to be devout followers of the Quran, which forbids men from wearing jewelry considered feminine.

Feminine jewelry includes anklets, bracelets, and rings worn on the index and middle finger. If you look at screenshots of the character, you will see a golden bracelet on his arm and rings on precisely those fingers. Why would a devout Malian scholar wear prohibited fashion?

Because, most likely, the writers who worked on this character didn't do the proper research. Everything about the character feels shallow and forced. He's put in the game for the sake of being there, with little thought put to why he would be there or how he would look.

So, in conclusion, the only conceivable motivation for including this particular character in a game set in medieval Bohemia is DEI-inspired representation for a certain minority group: African Americans. There is nothing remotely historical about a Malian scholar in Europe.
