Quite a lot, not purely out of passion of course, but because they sell well.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ January 4th, 2025, 19:56I refuse to accept that anyone actually sits down and thinks "Hmm, I want to make a dickbuilding roguelike, it's my passion in life"

How long will you continue to argue that one of the easiest single-developer-to-money pipeline genres 'sells like ****'?

COX 2 Ver. 1.50.93 released!
Not gonna lie. The last few months have been hard. We lost a beloved cat, and that rocked our little family. It also threw me off course with work on this game for more than a month, and I despaired for a time that I wouldn't have an update ready on schedule. But I eventually came back to it, and in truth, it was a relief to have a passion project to sink my time and energy into.
Thanks, as always, for being the gamers and roguelikers that you are. It's a lot more fun to work on the project when I know there's a receptive audience waiting.
If you're patching the game, please let me know ASAP if you discover I forgot to include something! It all looks solid on my end, but the patch always makes me nervous.
Here's what's new:► Major Improvements► Minor Improvements► Bug Fixes
I think IVAN (Iter Vehemens ad Necem, a Violent Road to Death) is a great roguelike, it was one of the titles I researched and tried back in December and it was one of the best. I have played it much or even at all recently but you made me remember it and will try to make time for it soon.
One of its main selling points for me is this:

While we're at it, is Caves of Qud simply a meme or is it decent?Body part system: Remember Monty Python and the Holy Grail? All bodyparts in IVAN have separate armors and separate hit points. After you’ve found your first good weapons, you will be able to reduce some monsters to helpless torsos by mutilating them frivolously! The game rewards brutality by showing its results graphically. Brutality can also be applied to you, though, so it’s best to have a remedy available in case of a lost limb.

Fixed the title of the thread to be clear it was one developer, but they downplayed it by saying it was a contractor. The guy was listed on their dev team page for years prior

Caves of Qud is a shame because it's one of the few games that actually gets close to a dying earth kind of setting. If you want to give it a go, I'd recommend pirating it to avoid giving the dev your shekels. I don't think there's too many other esoteric games like that, let alone roguelikes.
The subgenre could use more sci-fi games overall.

Buffalo Bill from RPG Codex wrote a review which may be of interest. I played it a bit a few years ago. The game felt too bloated for me and the writing was overwrought.OGchan wrote: ↑ January 25th, 2025, 00:33While we're at it, is Caves of Qud simply a meme or is it decent?

Caves of Qud uses procedural generation for everything, a lot of the writing, the quests, the maps - it reminds me of bad NES games with a bunch of visual vomit on screen that looks and plays terribly. The UI is a pile of garbage too. There appears to be depth to the skill system at first, but then you realize how simple the combat is, and that you can pretty much max everything out. I took flying and rifle skill and the entire game played the same from start to finish. I was virtually untouchable and never came close to dying. The main quest that is not procedurally generated can be summed up with one word: cryptic. You will spend a lot of time trying to understand wtf the game wants you to do, and then become disgusted with the quest design when you figure it out. I played the game 5+ years ago and it seemed promising then, but when I replayed recently I had to wonder what the hell these losers were doing in the intervening time? Nothing of importance was improved. It’s a shame because the game did have potential but the devs just suck dicks all day and couldn’t pull it together after the initially promising start.
This looks interesting - it seems like it's very narratively focused, especially for a roguelike. Have you played it? I'm wondering how that would affect the freedom traditional roguelikes usually provide.
Not a huge fan of the game kicking off with the character making a deal with the devil, though.
