Why are there not more games where I can be a righteous Paladin?
Because games are made by studios full of people who hate the idea of definitive good and evil. Wouldn't it be more fun if we subverted expectations and made the Paladin the bad guy and the demon the good guy?

The one thing I love most about Gothic 2 is the fact that you can become a Paladin. It's not just, "Oh, here you go, armor and sword, and that's it." No, people actually comment on it. Mercenaries will call you a bootlicker, people in the Monastery will either talk to you with reverence or as equals, and peasants will thank you and praise Innos. The smith, if you train under him, comments on each promotion, saying he doesn't regret taking you under his wing one bit.

The best part about being a Paladin is the armor, the two-handed sword, and the religious aspects. You can pray to Innos, and you can consecrate your Ore Blade (sure, it's tied to a sizeable donation of 5,000 gold, but it's not some mumbo jumbo placebo; Innos genuinely consecrates your blade so you can strike down evildoers). You also go around and cleanse shrines by using holy water and praying.

Why are there not more games where I can be a righteous Paladin? (Okay, the Nameless Hero is not exactly an upstanding citizen, but I think if you go this route, you can genuinely be a good man.)
Risen 3 has a guardians faction. I recall there being some reactivity, but it has been a long time.
I dunno, I actually liked risen 2 & 3 and thought the hate they got was really overblown.

Finally, Corriden is coming out on January 29 this year. I'm interested in playing it when it comes out.

What about the accusation that the game is full of DEI and SBI ****?

If a new game that looks interesting turns out to be ****, then I reckon people will simply refund it. If there's indeed a DEI infection then chances are the game itself will be terrible.

I was already starting to get suspicious of the game when they changed the artwork to feature the black lady only because that's a common complaint. Also the purple background color scheme has become infamous after Dragon Age: The Veilguard used that and raced to the bottom of the DEI pit.

Yeah, I would comment on this citing the parasites who destroyed countless developers: the redditor fedora atheist/nihilist, the soulless *****, the satanic ******, the surly arab, etc; :pipe-thinking:

The color purple and girlbosses have been used extensively to produce one game worse than the next. I have little faith in games that feature either as it seems to be a clear mark of badness. Also, *******.

Don't know if to laugh, cry or simply shrug at this point. A new Monster Manual for DnD came out ... WotC gender-swapped whoever they could. Hags and Driads can be males now, while succubus and incubus are not two separate creatures, but - yes, you guessed it - one transgender thing. :(

Changing another creature's gender without its consent is an evil act.

Actually I just realized. There is a catch 22 here.
If a creature is consenting to gender bending then it is mentally ill and can't act in good health therefore can't give consent so changing it's gender is still evil.

Goes further than name calling. If you join the city you can't get all those stews from whatsherface that give you stat boosts because they don't like the militia. You still get one less for being a magician and Lee laughs at you for joining them though you still don't catch the kind of flak you do for becoming part of the militia.

I like how one of the first questions you can ask when you get inside the town is how to get armor like the paladin's and he gets all ****** off and indignant with you. Also, yeah TNH is joining up with whoever he pleases entirely to get access to the Eye of Innos, no other reason. In fact, for someone marked by the gods he gets a load of opportunities to be a complete **** throughout the series.

There should probably be a term to differentiate between skill-based systems where you can eventually be good at everything, and skill-based systems where your potential is limited in some way.

e.g., former is (most of) Bethesda's TES games, latter is point-buy and also more unique games that gate character development based on decisions you make like Gothics/Archolos.

Maybe take a page from Scifi categorization, Hard RPGs and Soft RPGs?

I still find the "Why didn't you trust the SCIENCE?!" admonition that nearly every companion aims at you for not making a genocidal bacteria that definitely won't mutate or get out of control hilarious.

Seems very reasonable. Arguably a game cannot be truly immersive if you can get every skill to max.
