What about a slight gloss / shine over OG badges? This one is imperfect, I made it rather quickly.
Can increase downtime as well, currently it's 4 sec on the static pin and then gloss rolls over.
I can make it more subtle. Or it's too much lol ?

Isn't this thread generally for ideas and discussion about badges? I wasn't claiming that's one and true way to do it, just gave an option.J1M wrote: β December 18th, 2024, 19:25You are very capable, but please don't create animated images that show up next to every post.Silver wrote: β December 18th, 2024, 19:24Yeah, but this one won't need it.rusty_shackleford wrote: β December 18th, 2024, 19:12My original idea for it was to use a different color frame

I also don't know how many people on the forum actually have OG badges, if animation is "resting" more than 4 sec it could've been a nice touch for people who actually have OG stuff.
I like the animation idea and I don't see why it would be a problem.Silver wrote: β December 18th, 2024, 19:30Isn't this thread generally for ideas and discussion about badges? No, nothing in particular. The crossed swords for combat is something that gets clicked on a lot, but that's not very exciting. I didn't get too far before I softlocked myself.SpellSword wrote: β December 18th, 2024, 18:25@Tweed was there any pixel art that stood out for you in Hexx: Heresy of the Wizard?J1M wrote: β December 18th, 2024, 18:09Preferably it would be an important item from the game art rather than the box art for these OG AG pins. But if no better suggestion emerges I could scale the eye down to fake it.
A wee bit small, but cool.

Dunno why, but I thought about mithril-like colour for the frame? Might not be distinct enough. And it doubles down on the "metal badges" look again, which some people don't want.rusty_shackleford wrote: β December 18th, 2024, 19:12My original idea for it was to use a different color frame
It should be just silver, but bluish-purple tint was popularised in games at some point, I guess.

Without the "metal" elements I can't help but feel like it all falls flat, especially on a small scale. But hey, to each their own.

@buttfucker 3000 whats your take on this?
Haven't seen a single good VTMB badge posted in this thread btw
If you can't get the full ankh or Two Worlds logo in then you've failed and need to go back to square one.

It's not my fault it was described as a "silvery" metal! Both when mined and forged (iirc).

There is one definite and one possible issue with this idea.Silver wrote: β December 18th, 2024, 19:30Isn't this thread generally for ideas and discussion about badges? The definite issue is distraction. Having one or more badges occasionally "flashing" will constantly draw readers' eyes away from posts to the badges, whether they like it or not. Of course the flash can be ignored, but it would take effort to do so. Annoying.
I suppose you could argue making the interval between flashes longer, but I suspect that will make the phenomenon even more noticeable and distracting - "I saw something from the corner of my eye..." - with users focusing solely on the badges to try to catch the flash again in focus.
The possible issue is performance. An animation added to a lot of users' posts is probably going to cause a performance hit on both the back- and front-end. Issues with animated avatars already had to be dealt with. I know Rusty has worked on this before and I think it's mostly taken care of, but I would be very hesitant to add something new to the pile, so to speak.
For myself I like the idea of different pin colors more. I also like the idea of making the OG AG badges feel a little more old-school with the reduced color spectrum.
I don't experience that at all. It isn't a problem for me.Kalarion wrote: β December 19th, 2024, 13:06The definite issue is distraction. That shouldn't be a problem. Stuff like animated gifs and even pngs are very well-worn technology. For example, there are already dozens of animated smilies next to the post editor, which haven't caused any issues. The possible issue is performance. The only issue I remember with animated avatars was the case of the disappearing bandwidth, which also only applied to the specific user who had the avatar - which leads me to suspect, although it wasn't said, that it was something about the little avatar that shows in the upper right of a page, not the ones next to posts. Outside of highly suspect circumstances, nothing like that should happen, just as animated smilies have been fine.

This is true. Especially when there's multiple posters on screen.Kalarion wrote: β December 19th, 2024, 13:06There is one definite and one possible issue with this idea.Silver wrote: β December 18th, 2024, 19:30Isn't this thread generally for ideas and discussion about badges? Focus should be on the posts. Better keeping them static.

"Oh, it all makes sense now, brother."
So, any updates on these? I think it's a decent idea.Finarfin wrote: β December 17th, 2024, 19:00I tried my hand at these, they are obviously very amateurish since the Polygon one has squiggly lines and the IGN and Kotaku ones also have some small blemishes. I approached Rusty with the Idea of 1) Giving reviewers "Journo" badges when they do 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20 reviews and 2) have the most well known journo site logos in the HQ colors. I like the IGN one so far which you most likely saw already since Rusty changed it but The Kotaku and Polygon one might need some fixing and I still need to do the rest. Here is a list of the badges I thought of:
- 1 Review β "Respected Games Journalist"
The IGN Logo.- 5 Reviews β "Kotaku Contributor"
Just the K of Kotaku.- 10 Reviews β "Polygon Writer"
The Polygon logo.- 15 Reviews β "Eurogamer Analyst"
The round logo with the european continent.- 20 Reviews β "Gamespot Veteran"
The Gamespot G.

Okay genuinely no more hyperbolic hating is there *any* way the Vampire and Two Worlds badges can be edited to show the full icon? I think the badges are in a far better state than they used to be but those are the primary ones that are making me hold off on switching.

I think it's pretty clear that all constructive feedback has been welcomed. If you have a solution in mind to improve them that other people haven't considered, you can create a draft at the correct resolution and see if others like it. Doesn't have to be perfect.Vergil wrote: β January 3rd, 2025, 03:21Okay genuinely no more hyperbolic hating is there *any* way the Vampire and Two Worlds badges can be edited to show the full icon? This looks like dogshit but it's kind of a mock up of trying to fit the full ankh in.

It looks uncentered no matter what I do I can't tell what the deal is. I think it's because the border is thicker on one side than the other.
