Example of RPGs that do attrition well?

Do these even exist outside of early dungeon crawlers?

Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire (not the 3DS remake): you had to stock up on supplies when journeying through the rainforest from Mauville to Fortree, Fortree to Lilycove, and then for the ocean voyage in the last 1/3rd of the game when you are constantly being attacked by swimmers and wild sea Pokemon and exploring labyrinthine caves.

For Pokemon Colosseum you need to conserve items throughout the whole game because unlike normal Pokemon games you can't farm money or exp because there are no wild Pokemon and most trainers only fight you once.

The Banner Saga 1: you can't grind and you can't buy everything at every shop you stop at, and the same currency you trade to buy stuff (supplies) is also used to feed your starving caravan each day, though that is really a cosmetic/atmospheric stat and does not have any real mechanical implications IIRC. I remember there being a stretch towards the end where I ran out of supplies and I was losing a lot of clansmen every day to starvation and illness. TBS2 and TBS3 are much easier.

Older Fire Emblem games didn't let you grind, so you had to make do with what you stole or looted during missions, and your weapons breaks through use so you have to buy replacements using what limited money you get.

Well, Kenshi has blood loss, knockout below HP threshold on head, chest, or stomach, limb loss, and hunger which can knock you unconscious.

Both are good games but I like the first one better for its more straight-forward nature and more well-thought-out lore.

Heh, I feel like out there... somewhere... there was a thread with art of this character.

I've played a little bit of Funger. Frankly it's a little too on the artificial difficulty side and it has too much rape and gore porn for me. Not really a fan of losing because of developer trolling and having to watch my character get violently sodomized by monsters and hacked apart ad nauseum.

I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

Was looking at the Steam page for the second one and, I believe Furin (woke content detector curator), says that there is a "*****" character

"Contains overtly pro-LGBTQ+ messaging. The playable character Marina is *****."

do you know if that is true if you played the second one Vergil? Or @Valter do you know if that is true, or if it's a case like Vivec from Morrowind or something like that considering the game's genre and the gore Vergil mentioned?

This is true, it's one of the several playable characters you can choose at the start.
And one of those is also a genius black sorcerer with 300x more backstory and plot-relevance than everyone else and has NPCs make jokes about how big his penis is.

The dev is becoming noticeably more degenerate.
Which is why I said they're both good games, yet I prefer the first one :D

He's the equivalent of Gwyndolin from Dark Souls - boy raised as a girl.

Funger series is a bit of a weird one. It has a bunch of degenerate content in it, including homosex (explicit in the first game but not obligatory), homo rape (implied if you lose to the wrong enemy, explicit if you lose to another boss), rape (one of recruitable companions will have suffered it if you're not playing as her), lots of gore (loss of limbs, faces getting torn off one of your followers and worn as a mask, the ability to flay one of your party members living), a masked man whose hand will become quite 'active' in his pocket when he offers to buy children from you (if you recruited the child party member, or created a literal demonic child with the use of a special spell on a corpse) - all this just in the first game.

However, since the graphics are low fidelity, this content is less in your face than getting hit with **** sliders in AAA titles. The game itself doesn't really promote or preach anything - it's a survival horror title at heart, and this stuff feels more a means to lend the game a stiflingly bleak tone. It's pain, death and despair in a fallen world presided over by a merciless band of pagan deities. There is no salvation.

I know very little about the second game besides the handsome nazi in @citard 's pfp. Iirc the ***** character is another case of a boy being forced to be raised as a girl.

All of that stuff in the 1st game IS supposed to be horrible and despicable.
The ****** in the 2nd game is referred to by his (((proper pronouns))) by the system narration itself. And his personal quest is about how bigoted! his dad and the town he left is for not accepting him how he is. It's really preachy.

It's the same as ever. Parents are afaik Dark Priests that worshipped The Old Gods and his Father was a well... Father in Prehevil and his mother didn't want Marina/Marinus to be a dark priest so she concealed the fact that he was a boy since all eldest sons have to be. He then went to the Vatican to learn and be free of his fathers gaze.

Just a shame that the dev basically went pozzed and is way too involved with ******** and *******. The first game was great, atmosphere and story-wise. I also hate that everyone is basically soyjacking about the fact that it has gore and rape in it and always titles their videos "I AM PLAYING THE SICKEST INDIE-RPG EVA!!!1!1"

In theory, D&D games can do this (either 4e or if they restrict healing items in other editions) if long rests are limited due to how healing surges and spell slots work.

I seem to recall that Temple of Elemental Evil did this somewhat okay as well as Solasta: Lost Valley.

Pathologic is all about attrition.

Also, I find that modded Morrowind does it well: ban levitation and ****** jumping, limit teleports to temples (or one way town portals), limit mana restoration (and, ofc, alchemy shenanigans and vampirism) and Red mountain becomes pretty challenging. The engine gives you a limited inventory, respawning enemies and some long maps to attrite through.
I've actually appreciated how much work went into Red Mountain only when I've banned all kinds of fast travel.
Vanilla, of course, is meh.

The problem with attrition may be that all loot and powerups and skillups when leveling or exploring then largely reward . . . are you ready . . . reducing or eliminating attrition . . . like most artifacts in Heart of Chornobyl

That also poses a second problem: that loot and skills and rewards that improve other aspects of the character are reduced

So experience suffers in competition with games that have no attrition hence unlocking a skill or finding magical loot gives you . . . the meteor ability or the hurricane ability or the fire rain ability . . . instead of just -5 hunger then -10 hunger then NO HUNGER at lvl 100. (Ya did it. Hoo Ray.)

Hunger has to play a big role in animations, I would suggest, for attrition to matter and be done well. Then reducing hunger rate actually unlocks new "cool" (read: flashy) moves and abilities, making it FUN to manage and stand well in the competition of the MARKET.

Final Fantasy I was pretty good in the early to mid game about attrition thanks to its Vancian magic system, no item resurrections, and damage floor tiles. In the late game, you'd find magic equipment you could use to cast unlimited heals, which made attrition less of a factor.

Attrition isn't real unless time is real, so the vast majority of RPGs with "good" attrition, if not all of them, are going to be roguelikes. If supplies are effectively infinite and gated only by real life playtime, there is no attrition.

Super Hylide: You need to eat three meals a day, missing a meal will weaken you and eventually lead to death, you also need to sleep or it will eventually lead to your demise and the only place to sleep are in towns* which means you have to plan your excursions in advance and pack meals which all take up weight in your inventory. *There's camping gear, but it's the single most expensive item in the game.

Das Geisterschiff: Save points system, 2 points to save, one to reload. You get 50 total and they're not replenishable.

Der Geisterturm: There's an upper limit on armor plates to repair your RCS so lingering in area for too long will screw you over. Der Geisterjager removed this.

Hi-potions didn't exist in the NES version. The remakes are significantly easier.

"Worth it?"

Do you value your sanity? Do you enjoy misery porn? Do you enjoy being the star in a torture snuff film?

If yes to all, then yes, it is worth it.

It is a great testament of what can be done with the old RPG Maker, the little engine that could. It's brutally, and I do mean brutally hard. Pulls no punches. You will die, many many many times. You need to spend very rare consumable item to save. Otherwise, you can only save in a save point which are a handful across the entire game. Yes, that's less than five in total. If you die, the game is over and you must start from the very beginning. Wasn't this supposed to be a turn based RPG? That is correct, it is. After learning the ropes, you will still die since items are randomized, so you will remember where is an item stored but what item will be this time depends on RNG. If you persevere, there's some interesting character stories to be had, depending on your chosen protagonist and your actions throughout your adventure. Extremely grimdark and truly lovecraftain, in the real way of sanity and humanity loss and unfathomably uncaring gods with alien mindsets without resorting to the usual "tentacle head monster" mainstream idea of 'lovecraftian'.

Fear and Hunger is a game about teaching the player that life is pain and then you die. You decide if that's a game you want to spend hours of your very finite and ever so constantly dwindling time on this world.

It appears to contain rampant sodomy, exposed genitals, and all other manner of perverseness. It also contains a furry.
