Dark Forces 2 is good fun, would recommend. About halfway thru I think
It is but some of those boss fights towards the end are kinda awful. Also Mysteries of the Sith is basically just getting your balls flogged I wouldn't recommend trying it unless you're absolutely dedicated to playing all the games in the series.

Finished Cognition, one of the early Kickstarter games. It could have been OK based on the story, but everything is just so **** slow. Lots of stupid backtracking, glacier slow animations, it wasn't easy to stay engaged.

Very nearly finished Super Earth Defense Force but got filtered by the final boss. I was getting annoyed at how it took a turn for the bullet hell with the fourth level, but it got absolutely obnoxious with the final two bosses that combined bullet hell with massive damage sponges.

I spent upwards of 10 minutes fighting the penultimate boss with the aid of rewinds against my better judgment, but noped out of the next one much sooner. Just watched the rest of this video to see the ending, I have more enjoyable things to do.

So far, a better "kingdom-building" game than Soulash 2...

It's okay, but it gets repetitive too soon. Unless the new updates have significantly improved the long-term play.

Now playing Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II using the source port OpenJKDF2
https://github.com/shinyquagsire23/OpenJKDF2
Level design is nice, but I'm not enjoying it as much :scratch-pipe:
Enjoying it a lot more after I got me lightsaber. Level design is improved over DF1, which already had good level design.
Descent into the Valley was awful, complete labyrinth and the map does nothing because it's all vertically stacked. Probably spent a fourth of my total playtime just wandering around this level.

Finished Dark Forces 2. Solid :4of5:, perhaps higher if this is a genre you favor. Good level design(except for one level), tight controls, decent difficulty, OpenJKDF2 sourceport ran fine on lunix with only one bug.
Won't be playing the expansion, partly due to the sourceport not fully supporting it, partly because I want to move on.

I promise you you're not missing much. Unless you're ***** and want the novelty of playing as Mara Jade it's Dark Forces II but worse in every way.

It's a gud game. Arcade version has a few level differences from the console, but the SNES version has more weapons.

It's much slower and the level design isn't as good so far. Some of the things needed to move forward are bordering on adventure game moon logic.

In Jedi Outcast? I barely remember there being anything like that post Dark Forces II. The pre-lightsaber missions are kinda slower tho.

Don't loik that there are locked doors that will unlock just by progressing the mission, rather confusing.

I tend to post my negative thoughts rather than positive, so I'm actually having fun but I think the game is going to improve a lot when I actually get my lightsaber.

Also, difficulty is really high. I started on hard and had to restart the game.

When you get it, make sure to mess around with the "g_saberrealisticcombat 1" console command.

Oh yeah, there's no automap or map at all for levels. What a massive step back from the dark forces games.

the game just feels punishing, many of the jumps require you to be completely pixel precise
example of what I'm referring to:

the guy playing says he edited out his failed attempts

the level designers of dark forces 2 were waaaayy better

Outcast was a 10-month rush job https://jkhub.org/forums/topic/8941-ask ... ent-128068

Star Trek Voyager Elite Force was the superior id tech 3 game, they had a solid two years.

It's like a game of L.O.R.D. with way too many other places installed. It's fun for awhile, but you'll be glad to be done.

Have you played Outcast lately? I had to drop the difficulty down to easy and was still getting my *** kicked in a lot of areas. I'm playing Academy on hard now without issue.

Academy:
  • Still no automap, lost 1990s technology that will never be rediscovered.
  • Story feels much more juvenile.
  • Combat is FUN.
  • Level design is still worse than Dark Forces 2 … but … mission design is varied and pretty good.
  • Katarn has a bunch of different VAs throughout the series, but Dark Forces 2 was easily the best.
  • I want to play as Katarn.
  • Katarn feels poorly written and mostly out of character.
  • Outcast feels like a prototype in comparison to Academy.
