RPGs where you can leave the party?
If you've spent any time with people, you get tired of them. You get along with them, to do what you need to do, but there's no escaping the fact they all suck. How do parties of adventurers not end in homicidal meltdowns, when none of the members have any privacy, and your designated leader floats by whenever he wants, to ask you about your feelings? Tell me about RPGs where I can leave the party, until the boss actually needs me to do something.
Weirdest cracker you know.

Obligatory Oblivion "you aren't the main character".
Enderal, you only have party members with you on specific quests.

Do devs forget the Fellowship were ultimately distrustful of one another and nearly ended in disaster? Three of them only stuck together, because they wouldn't let former comrades get tortured and eaten. If the orcs hadn't attacked, they could have fought over Frodo's decision. Stop making these gayass rpgs where everyone pretends to like eachother, like its band camp or some ****.

Baldur's Gate isn't exactly what you asked for, but a lot of the companions do clash with each other and will fight to the death if kept in the same party long enough. It's a shame so few RPGs are willing to do this.maidenhaver wrote: ↑ November 11th, 2024, 22:02Do devs forget the Fellowship were ultimately distrustful of one another and nearly ended in disaster? I prefer my party companions to be devoid of personality or psychological issues. I am more interested in managing action economy than interpersonal squabbles or inventory contents.
Best of both worlds would be a game where in addition to colorful companions that you can interact with at camp, you also have a highly professional military away team for the combat resolution.
Example: Mass Effect 2, except Miranda and Liara stay on the ship while the N7 hit squad infiltrate and eliminate the vorcha squatters and save the girl.

It's one of the worst trends in gaming, everything has to have a party, you all have to be friends, and this "friendship" is always more important than the mission.
I get it if you respect your team after surviving, but that's rarely ever the case. It's also almost always a cringe dating-sim for Reddit freakshows.
Also Kenshi fits the bill.

To have a role, you need a party, but what happened to good ol "50 marks a week. I keep what I can carry. If you need me, I'm at the inn."
"Isn't this fun! We're caaaaaaaaamping! Truth or Dare!"

I'm not entirely sure that's true.

Yes, and no surprise that they became more prevalent as the percentage of female writers also increased.maidenhaver wrote: ↑ November 11th, 2024, 22:20They're HR simulators. You play the role of the rat from HR who needs to choose the employees you can ataboy into control.

Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2, BG3 allow you to fully split the party and go adventuring separately as long as you stay in the same chapter.

To be clear, I actually don't like directly controlling my party members other than my character. In ATOM you can give each individual party member orders from your main character on how they should behave('flee', 'defend this position', 'attack this guy', 'heal yourself' iirc?, etc.,) which is very close to my ideal. That is, they do their best to fulfill your order rather than you controlling them.

This is my most loathed aspect about crpgs like pathfinder and so on. having to micro manage every member just turns it into a lesser tactics game instead of an RPGrusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ November 16th, 2024, 06:12To be clear, I actually don't like directly controlling my party members other than my character. Seax þyrsteþ, gierneþ blōd!
I used to love that part, never even thought of automating it. Now I am not so sure anymore, I used way more Tactics during my last DA:O playthrough than I did the first time around.Serjo wrote: ↑ November 16th, 2024, 06:16This is my most loathed aspect about crpgs like pathfinder and so on. having to micro manage every member just turns it into a lesser tactics game instead of an RPGrusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ November 16th, 2024, 06:12To be clear, I actually don't like directly controlling my party members other than my character. Well, Kenshi you assign 'Jobs' to PCs, and they execute them without oversight.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ November 16th, 2024, 06:12To be clear, I actually don't like directly controlling my party members other than my character.
