Don’t Nod should make good games and not a thinly veil movie “game” with **** choose your own adventure elements at that.

Maybe then they can actually turn a profit.

Inflexion closed their UK studio

https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/ ... osing-down

and more interestingly, Ubisoft kicked their Prince of Persia team: https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/ ... ting-sales

Apparently they were anyway not working. Shocker.

"Last year, Ubisoft Montpellier was under investigation by French authorities after "dozens" of developers went on sick leave in 2022. Many of those employees were said to be team leads, and burnout was a specific reason listed for their leave."

Weird how all this "burnout" and "crunch" wasn't an issue until people on social media said it was an issue. The video game industry existed for over 30 years before twitter!
From all the anecdotes I have of developers in the 80s/90s, they used to work much harder than they do now.

And they were all WFH. Imagine getting burned out because you need to open Slack at 9 or join a random online meeting every once in a while.

To be fair, the current HR/DEI laden office culture and constant faggy meetings nowadays must be exhausting torture as compared to old-style gamedev.
You may as well not bother replying to my posts if it's to argue anything except concrete facts or your personal opinion. I still probably won't see it.

DEI ****** be like: "We're better than you, chud incel weirdo. We are independent creative artists. And we don't need gamers like you, thanks but no thanks".
"What?! Why I'm homeless?! I'm losing my job because no one is buying my game. Show me some empathy! I have to feed my wife and her boyfriend. Bloody hell, It's like Holocaust 2.0".

Not everyone is happy with Sony closing money sink studios.

Communication Workers of America (CWA):
"Sony's decision to dissolve studios outside their walled-garden of PlayStation-exclusive content, rather than making games that have to compete in the highly diverse and competitive mobile game market, should be a cautionary warning sign of Sony's interests in furthering their monopoly position in the video game industry"

I am not sure how that makes any sense, how a 400M loss somehow improves Sony's market position but here we are...

We're at an estimated 13,000 gamedevs fired in 2024. God bless!

Well with the Xbox brand being an abject failure for over a decade now, you could say Sony has a monopoly on home consoles. The Switch doesn't count.

They probably got rid their highest payed employees and more Whites. I don't think the games will be getting any better.

If they don't get better then less and less people will buy them, and in turn more devs will be fired. If it's true that they're only sacrificing the competent ones to keep the DEI ones then that's just extending their agone even more. kek

I'm seeing this in other industries. They're letting go of skilled long-time workers that are expensive, then hiring young inexperienced workers they can pay a pittance. Short term gain seems to be the only concern, especially in tech. We're not heading in the right direction.

Though the more companies that fail trying to hold the DEI line, the better for everyone in the long term.

That might be true for other industries, in gaming I am not so sure. Most devs are being fired because their game massively underperformed and the studio either closed or downsized. Rarely do they get replaced by cheaper or even overseas staff.

And so many games underperforming is to a huge part also the fault of those devs. If you just look at those games, it really seems like the average skill level, or more general average output, declined over the years.

Good points. We're in a self-inflicted competency crisis; One that will continue as studios seem to want to die on the DEI hill.
