Do you care about game achievements?
Do you care about game achievements?
I do not. But sometimes it's interesting to see the overall statistics. For example I started a IE campaign for Tzeentch in TWW3 and after a few turns I got an achievement for using Changing of the Ways ability. Steam shows less than 15% of players have this. This is some basic **** which you can get right after starting Tzeentch campaign and only 15% have it.

I like them. Especially when I like the game itself. However, my ideal scenario is earning all achievements in one full playthrough without stressing about missing any. It's bothersome when there are hidden conditions to unlock an achievement and you have to actively hunt for it, which can be tough to figure out unless you're purposely seeking it. It's a bit aggravating.

What do you mean? What reward would an achievement give?
I always saw them as autistic pointless bragging rights "Oh look, I killed this many mobs under this time", "I found the secret of x, y, z".
If it is actually something you gain as a reward in a game (ie item, skill point, etc...) wouldn't that be more of a "game play mechanic" and not really an achievement system as they are generally used?

No most of the time they're boring generic crap tied to basic progression anyway.
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

I like them when they're given for accomplishing something meaningful, not just 'completed chapter X' or 'did 1000000 points of ice damage'. Achievements for beating optional, challenging fights, for example, are cool.
Also achievements that encourage playing the game a different way, or using a different character/class/weapon et al, or when the devs are having fun with the player and using the achievements to hint at hidden content that the player has yet to uncover.WhiteShark wrote: ↑ November 1st, 2024, 15:46I like them when they're given for accomplishing something meaningful, not just 'completed chapter X' or 'did 1000000 points of ice damage'. Crazy thought but imagine if that could all just be in the game.gerey wrote: ↑ November 1st, 2024, 15:47Also achievements that encourage playing the game a different way, or using a different character/class/weapon et al, or when the devs are having fun with the player and using the achievements to hint at hidden content that the player has yet to uncover.WhiteShark wrote: ↑ November 1st, 2024, 15:46I like them when they're given for accomplishing something meaningful, not just 'completed chapter X' or 'did 1000000 points of ice damage'. I think it's pointless and cringe; they don't even need to be tied to rewards, arguably, that's even more lame, because it suspends disbelief by making something in-game tied to a meta check.
Realistically, it's just another way to appease the progression/success based wiring in our brains, in order to convince you to keep playing ****** games.

I only care about them to the extent I get some kind of in-game reward.
I think its nice when the devs make achievements for doing things that are difficult and very specific to give players something to do as a fun replay. Getting the achievement isn't important really, its just an impetus to play the game again in an unorthodox way.
I play normally and like to see getting them but don't see any utility on them.

I like achievements when I can easily get all of them in ~40 hours of playtime. I hate them when they are tied to buggy or ******** conditions. Just go look at retroachievemts for some great examples. There's a FF xii chievo for something ******** like beating the hardest boss with no levels and one char.

If it is anything like the Steam, Xbox Achievements or Playstation Trophies with their intrusive pop-ups. Hell no. Even without those, lots of achievements are a hassle to complete.
When implemented in-game through, let's say a Sci-Fi shooter with a terminal which tracks progress from the character's special gear/tool and unlocks rewards, that is better.
Baseline: If it doesn't enhance the gaming experience it doesn't have to be there. And most achievements don't.
It was much better with sharing achievements on forums or in chat groups back in the early to mid or late 00s.

Dragon Age Origins has achievements that give you OP items every time you start a new game. You can have a mace that you can sell for 70 gold in the starting area. The max that you can scrounge up by that point in a regular game is ~12 gold.Xenich wrote: ↑ November 1st, 2024, 15:43What do you mean? What reward would an achievement give?

Achievements don't give you anything.
I personally throw it all on the ground or some **** at the start; though money becomes zero object very quickly anyway, so it barely matters.

Passageway of the Ancients introduced about 30 achievements 2 weeks after release, after I had beaten the game and they do not retroactively unlock. I hate that more than I would like for some reason.

I remember some Ubisoft games had items in tge shop you buy after getting an achievement. I think it was an asscreed game, items were either cosmetics or some actual armor/weapons.Xenich wrote: ↑ November 1st, 2024, 15:43What do you mean? What reward would an achievement give?

Most achievements are trivial indeed. But there are some that are not easy to get. That depends on the game and the developers.Jordy wrote: ↑ November 1st, 2024, 15:40Ding: Opened your inventory

WH40K Darktide has some achivements you are going to get simply by playing the game but some require certain approach or require long playtime to get if you play wo guving a **** about them.
I only like achievements when they serve as breadcrumbs to aspects of the game that are not immediately obvious.
For example, I am not going to attempt said achievement, but if it has one for a non-lethal playthrough that is useful information about the game.
Anno 1404 did this pretty well. There is an achievement for playing on a friendly difficulty and raising the population to a really high level. An interesting challenge that isn't the normal progression someone would think of.

Talking about pillars that game is almost 10 years old but only 15% of players managed to finish the base game. Even less the expansions. Only 1% managed to beat the game on Path of the damned.relative-pacifism

When TF2 started adding new weapons to the game, they did it class by class and locked them behind getting a certain amount of new achievements for that class. So when, say, the medic update came out you would have servers full of people all playing medic and ******* around to farming achievements instead of playing the game properly for a good long while. It was very stupid and they dropped that system eventually.
Some are cool or amusing, others help keep track of who played what. I like them.
I only care for achievements in good games, achievements in bad games can gtfo.
