Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Post by DDC »

A new turn-based JRPG that looks a lot like a next-gen version of FF13. I hated FF13 though. Great looking environments, cool monster design, non-ugly women, best case (and the hope) is for a competent final fantasy clone along the lines of Lost Odyssey. I'm hopeful for this because the new final fantasy games aren't even final fantasy anymore, but I can't shake the feeling that it might be slop. Marks against it so far:

-Made by ex Ubisoft devs
-None of the gameplay footage shows playable town areas
-Turn-based "with real time mechanics," something no actual fan of turn-based RPGs ever asked for. According to IGN: "Broche tells me that he was inspired by Sekiro’s parry system to implement skill-based elements into the genre’s traditional tactical framework. The result is quick time event-augmented turns, with reflex and timing-based actions required in both the attack and defend phases." Quite possible that the devs have no idea what the **** they're doing and combat/character development will be shallow and ******.

Actually beautified...

Would be more interested if the world looked a bit more alive. World/level looks a bit like from any generic souls clone.

The third female character reminds me of Kay "El Goblina" Vess from Star Wars Outlaws, which isn't a good sign. Other than that I'm pretty interested in this, I'd like to see a good western JRPG that beats the japs at their own game. Even if it's made in fr*nce.

Also, not sure if this counts as a JRPG. "JRPG combat" is just DRPG combat. :scratch-pipe:

Female characters are ugly, gameplay system makes no sense, and the game's name seems like a bunch of random words thrown together.

Again and again, who is this game made for?

Where are the female characters ugly? These characters are better looking by a landslide compared to games from woke ******* devs.
>Gameplay System makes no sense
For you maybe, I knew exactly what type of game this is going to be. A Lost Odyssey like turn-based rpg with real-time mechanics.

>the game's name seems like a bunch of random words thrown together
So, how about informing yourself about the game?

"Once a year, the Paintress wakes and paints upon her monolith. Paints her cursed number and everyone of that age turns to smoke and fades away.
Year by year, that number ticks down and more of us are erased. Tomorrow she’ll wake and paint “33.” Tomorrow we depart on our final mission - Destroy the Paintress, so she can never paint death again.
-We are Expedition 33"

I wonder what this means???? Oh I got it. People that were aged 1-32 were erased by the evil paintress and everyone aged 33 will face the same fate unless they stop her (This is were the main characters come into play)
As for Clair Obscur, that's literally just the french name for chiaroscuro, the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition. Creative Director Guillaume Broche said it helped to form the “overarching world of the game"

I don't have weebsight but I'd say it's a RPG inspired by JRPGS.

Creative Director Guillaume Broche noted the Tales of series, Persona, and Lost Odyssey influencing the game’s RPG elements, while the combat takes cues from Devil May Cry, NieR, and the Souls series.

They're dumpy, average looking foids. If you passed them on the street you wouldn't even register their presence.

And we all know they picked the two women specifically because of how average they look. The better-looking redhead also looks like she was hit with the ugly stick when being digitalized.

This obsessions with realism is ******* gay, just give me idealized, hand-sculpted female characters. Why are the ***** the only ones seemingly left capable of this once universal feat?

She's indeed the least worst of the three. But she's far from being beautiful. At least she's not painful to watch... I'll give her that.

I think we can all agree the worst thing about this game is it isn't a porn game. I need to see a full on sex dungeon or I'm not interested. Why are the women wearing so many clothes? Where's the diapers and futas?

CGI/in-game model looks weird, much younger in appearance when compared to the IRL model. Something has clearly gone wrong during the facescan, or subsequent touch-up work.

Must have been something highly specific in that Blackrock slide presentation 3 years ago about female-led videogames and putting a random number in the title.

She is supposed to look younger due to in-game reasons (there were rumors of a timeskip too, so both age-versions might end up in-game).
