No, need to go vanilla for the first run or even second to appreciate the changes in a mod like GMDX.

Is Deus Ex GOTY playable without having to patch it or are there game breaking bugs?

The GOG version works even on the 20 year old piece of **** PC I have.

I'm playing the Steam version because it's already in my library.

The Steam version works pretty good with GMDX on top of it. All the pirated versions seem to break with it (original release, Gog with Revision pre-patched in).

Yes, this is the definite version of Deus Ex, but for a first time playthrough I would still go vanilla.

A tip for Deux Ex character creation. Due to a bug, you can downgrade pistols to untrained, use the points for something else and when you finish character creation pistols will go back to trained.
