Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

I started my first run on Normal difficulty as I always do when trying a new game, but the only battle that has ever given me any trouble so far has been the Chaos Spawn boss of the prologue, and that was mainly because I was still learning how anything worked and that chaos thing could regenerate as long as there were other enemies around.
If the battles keep making me yawn I will consider upping up the stakes.

High difficulty combat is far better in Rogue Trader than in the Pathfinder games because it doesn’t have pre-buffing.Unhelpful Contrarian wrote: ↑ September 30th, 2024, 23:11Nah combat isn’t worth playing it on hard let alone unfair difficulty.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ September 30th, 2024, 23:04If you're reading this forum you should probably start on hard then switch to unfair after a few hours when you're comfortable with the game
Fair enough.Admittedly I find higher difficulties in a lot of games just increase the enemy count and making them bullet sponges which I find not interesting enough to go through the effort of playing higher difficulties.Brother Michael wrote: ↑ September 30th, 2024, 23:19High difficulty combat is far better in Rogue Trader than in the Pathfinder games because it doesn’t have pre-buffing.Unhelpful Contrarian wrote: ↑ September 30th, 2024, 23:11Nah combat isn’t worth playing it on hard let alone unfair difficulty.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ September 30th, 2024, 23:04If you're reading this forum you should probably start on hard then switch to unfair after a few hours when you're comfortable with the game

really wish the game showed which dialogue choices are mutually exclusive, I frequently want to ask multiple questions that I should be able to ask, but for whatever reason are exclusive to each other

The only pozzed **** I'm aware of is the dark eldar being the only gay option for males (which is admittedly really funny given the context) and Jae who can date either gender. Otherwise, unless I missed something the game is surprisingly cleanUnhelpful Contrarian wrote: ↑ September 17th, 2024, 14:59I agree that Owlcat does do quite a bit of pozzpushers but for Rogue Trader it wasn't as noticeable as Pathfinder: WOTR or Kingmarker probably because GW has a lot tighter leash on what they can do compared to Pazio.
DLC adds more gay ****, DLC writing it's pretty good otherwise. It also adds a new archetype and nets you more XP in act 1 and 2 which is nice for unfair playthroughsW1llus wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 03:19The only pozzed **** I'm aware of is the dark eldar being the only gay option for males (which is admittedly really funny given the context) and Jae who can date either gender. While I'm not surprised I am glad the new companion is female. Ulbrig in WOTR wasn't bad by any means but idk who they were trying to appeal to.Boontaker wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 03:29DLC adds more gay ****, DLC writing it's pretty good otherwise. Ulbrig is ok story wise but great mechanically. Some people will him find appealing romantically but that’s always going to small minority because the vast majority of people only romance female characters for obvious reasons.W1llus wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 03:49While I'm not surprised I am glad the new companion is female. I'd argue that increasing the number of enemies is often perfectly fine, because it actually changes the landscape of a battle and makes it harder in a real sense, as the number of variables increase, changing what considerations may have to be made, whereas the issue with bullet-sponging is that you've essentially already won a fight and you're just going through the motions to chip them down.Unhelpful Contrarian wrote: ↑ September 30th, 2024, 23:28Fair enough.Admittedly I find higher difficulties in a lot of games just increase the enemy count and making them bullet sponges which I find not interesting enough to go through the effort of playing higher difficulties.Brother Michael wrote: ↑ September 30th, 2024, 23:19High difficulty combat is far better in Rogue Trader than in the Pathfinder games because it doesn’t have pre-buffing.Unhelpful Contrarian wrote: ↑ September 30th, 2024, 23:11

This has been a pet peeve of mine for so long. It's one of the little things I really like about Witcher 3; conversation progressing options are yellow, divergent lines/questions are white.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 00:43really wish the game showed which dialogue choices are mutually exclusive, I frequently want to ask multiple questions that I should be able to ask, but for whatever reason are exclusive to each other

Absolutely agree there. The amount of guesswork I have to do to determine which dialogue progresses and which one is inquiring more information just drives me up the wall.Reichspepe wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 12:49This has been a pet peeve of mine for so long. the dlc archetypes are much better designed(and more interesting) than most of the base game ones imo, one of the bigger weaknesses of the game is most of the archetypes are… I don't want to say suck, but they're either inconvenient to use or not interesting

also, definitely not specific to this game but I dislike when rpgs punish you for having two characters with the same skill by only allowing to be used once
if I have two characters skilled in xeno lore, they should both be able to investigate it. If it's an issue of not wanting the entire party to try to trivialize it, put a minimum skill amount on it

the advanced archetypes feel so niche, like they took some ideas from people on their team about very specific things those players liked and if you don't like it, tough cookierusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 19:35the dlc archetypes are much better designed(and more interesting) than most of the base game ones imo, one of the bigger weaknesses of the game is most of the archetypes are… I don't want to say suck, but they're either inconvenient to use or not interesting
no idea how they went from a game that had 3 million classes to a game that has a handful

So, is this game better than the Pathfinder games? I've completely ignored it thinking it was just Pathfinder in Space.

Warhammer 40k is relatively low-level fantasy in comparison to Pathfinder, as in there's only one "mage" class/origin in this game when compared to the myriad of spellcastera that d20 settings have.Acrux wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 22:10So, is this game better than the Pathfinder games? Yes, I know Starfinder exists.
From what I have seen so far in Rogue Trader the combat feels more "mundane" as in battles are fought mainly with guns and melee weapons with the occasional psychic attack, in contrast again with Pathfinder where you're usually throwing fireballs and lightning in almost every combat encounter.
The setting itself is also much darker in comparison since Warhammer is like the OG grimdark tabletop, so if it's "better" or not would depend on what you prefer.

Yes. It seems faithful to wh40k from what I know, if you're a fan. The setting does a lot of heavy lifting tbh.

I take it you like the atmosphere then, even as someone not very familiar with it? I feel like the way the setting is portrayed is very well done, from the equipment, environmental assets, sounds and OST, and even the writing overall is quite well done concerning how the world and characters in it function and act.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 22:30Yes. (Basically the only gripe I have is the Master at Arms black lady cringe 2024 character looks-wise and mixed-gender human enemies/soldiers, which is nu-40k. But that's beating a dead horse and will hopefully be corrected by a mod eventually)
Very based, but I disagree; that Navy Officer RT is Martin Sellner in spaceFinarfin wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 22:21Sellner has a softer face though. The RT portrait looks slightly psycho, kek.
