That's more or less what I intend to do, but I'm worried about circumstances in which I'm the one invited to a party that contains a harcore player (as happened twice today), and, if the other source I read is correct, there may be some way for hardcore players to hide their hardcore status, in which case avoiding them wouldn't always be possible. I'll still do my best to avoid them, I just expect it to be a pain.J1M wrote: ↑ September 29th, 2024, 00:24I would suggest simply removing anyone from the group who is a hardcore player. If they walked all the way out? That's fine, they have time to walk back because they don't have a group. Or immediately find a replacement for them and when that person arrives drop them. If I understand the coded language correctly, you can just say the player was being "toxic" and that instructs normies to dogpile them for you.

I made one of my alts hardcore so I could see what the icon looks like:
I can confirm that it doesn't become covered by the looking for group icon, so I assume that level sync and linkshell icons also do not cover it. If there's a way to hide it, I can't find it in the menus, and I've seen other Discord users ask how to hide it without answer, so I think the guy who said it's concealable may be incorrect. Horizon is supposed to have a custom icon for it as part of the Horizon version of XIView, but the one that actually came with the launcher doesn't seem to have it. Be on the lookout since it just looks like another colored linkshell icon at first glance.
EDIT: Kalarion got me a screenshot of the way it appears in his client:

Even if it was possible, the people who are doing that are doing it because they want everyone to know. You'd have to be extremely successful at your segregation campaign to make them hide it.

Well, regardless, I'm becoming increasingly convinced that it can't be hidden. I tested covering it with LFG, /anon, and bazaar, but none of them changed it for me, and random passerby at the AH also confirmed they could still see it. I messaged the guy who said it could be hidden to ask how; I will report back when he responds. Until then, I'm going to assume he was mistaken or trolling. Now the only issue is the inability to view hardcore status from /sea.J1M wrote: ↑ September 29th, 2024, 02:14Even if it was possible, the people who are doing that are doing it because they want everyone to know. Some of us plebs are still grounded. We need to finish mission 3-3 so we can get airship access. Let's make that happen this week. I have a 44 WHM for the task.

The level sync is only relevant when EXPing. You can be sneaked/invisibled by Jim while us higher levels do the fighting.WhiteShark wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 16:54Sorry I wasn't on yesterday. For 3-3 we just need to get to the tenth floor of the Qufim tower and kill a level 36 NM. Jim and I are level 44 and Kal is in the mid 30s, I think we could do it. You can just stay stealthed and then interact with the ??? after we kill the NM to get your key item, and then we ride the elevator down to the basement and interact with a door to see a cutscene, and then you're doing.
For 4-1 (the one that rewards the airship pass for easy travel between the cities), you have to go through the three higher level beastman dungeons (Davoi for Orcs, Beadeaux for Quadav, and Castle Oztroja for Yagudo) and touch a magicite. Davoi is really easy, you invisible through and just need to drop invisibility for a few seconds to go through a magic field. The orcs will wail on you but if you are level 25ish+ you can survive just long enough to get through, or we could aggro the orcs first and then you go through and then we follow. Oztroja is a little trickier because there is a door that opens for a short time when a pressure plate a distance away is activated, but can also be done solo (with some difficulty). Definitely need prism powders/silent oils/invisible/sneak for this due to the level of the mobs. Beadeaux is the only one where you can't singlehandedly do it at level because you have to kill an NM first, so you want a party for that.

XP ring? I have no idea what conquest points are or where to buy the bands yet.

In San'doria, at the exits out to the forest of Ronfaure, there is a conquest guard on the right left. If you talk to him, you can ask him to cast the signet buff on you. While you have the signet buff active (buffs and their durations are seen at the top left of your screen), you will accumulate conquest points while killing mobs. You can talk to the same guard to spend your conquest points on items. One of the items you can get is a chariot ring, which you can equip and then go into your items menu and use for a double exp buff on a 16 hour cooldown (ticks down while you are offline). The ring has three charges of double exp buff. Once per week (weekly reset is on Sundays at 8 AM PST), you can buy a new ring or trade your ring to the conquest guard and he will recharge them for conquest points (buying a new ring costs the same as recharging).ArcaneLurker wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 22:22XP ring? No, but also yes.
FFXI does not have a clean separation between "tanks" and "DPS" like in WoW clones. In FF11, dealing high damage is also the best way to gain aggro. Any character that wants to "tank" for their group needs to be dealing high damage, and anyone who does not want to be hit needs to pace out their damage cooldowns so they do not gain aggro. A ranged DPS is just as much risk of pulling aggro and getting hit as a melee. Also, the threatening mobs in this game have AoE attacks that will hit all melee, so functionally everyone should be prepared to take a hit. This is why it is popular for PUG players to equip Ninja as a subjob for extra safety (shadow clone that can soak an attack) rather than equipping a damage focused job like warrior or samurai for more damage. So functionally, all melee DPS are going to be cotanks a lot (though not all) of the time.
It is possible to boast your aggro besides just dealing high damage, such as spending money on expensive enmity boosting gear, or wielding certain weapons and spending your TP on stun weaponskills. You can equip Warrior as a subjob and use the "taunt" ability Provoke, but this is not a fullproof solution as it only gives you volatile enmity, which decays with time (meaning after a few seconds, DPS who are dealing much more damage than you will pull aggro).
With enmity boosting gear and high HP, a monk can tank. However, the usual go-to tank main jobs for PUGing are warrior (is available from the get go, can deal high damage and has provoke), Paladin (survivable, can also cast the heal spell Cure on himself to generate aggro), and Ninja (can use shadow clones to soak incoming attacks). These are not the only tank builds mind you; samurai can tank (high damage, uses third eye ability to dodge an incoming attack), Red Mage tanks, etc. Red Mage can't tank from the getgo (doesn't have access to stoneskin and can't generate enough hate) like Warrior can, though.

Wouldn't the highest DPS also be the glass canons? If Monks are low in damage, which means they never pull aggro, what use are they?
At this point is it better for me to create a new character? Ah yeah, I'll create a Galka.

You can switch your job at any time at your Mog House. The only reason to make a new character would be to change your race, but every race has something it's the best at.ArcaneLurker wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 22:45At this point is it better for me to create a new character?
BLMs are supposed to be the highest damage (though SMNs may beat them on this server, not sure). They're the archetypical glass cannons. They do so much damage that they actually have to hold back lest they take aggro and explode when a monster looks at them.ArcaneLurker wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 22:45Wouldn't the highest DPS also be the glass canons? Your first Chariot Band should be free from the guard if you've done the tutorial quest (which is not at all obvious): https://horizonffxi.wiki/Tutorial_NPCArcaneLurker wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 22:22XP ring? I have no idea what conquest points are or where to buy the bands yet.
The heavy armor melee jobs (Warrior/Samurai/Dragoon/Dark Knight) generally deal the most damage.
Monks can deal a lot of damage, but they can't wear heavy armor, so if you want to be a Monk tank you would want to equip warrior as a subjob for the provoke and damage boost (samurai's damage boost for wielding two-handed weapons does not benefit a Monk who uses hand to hand combat), and to really pay attention/invest in your gear.ArcaneLurker wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 22:45If Monks are low in damage, which means they never pull aggro
Dealing damage. There are only a few jobs that deal so low damage that they are generally more valued for what else they bring to the table (Thief for pulling and increasing droprates, Ranger for pulling, Bard for buffing, etc).what use are they?
Yeah, I didn't realise the stat differences before, or that the Elves have the lowest HP, which wouldn't be the best idea for a tankWhiteShark wrote: ↑ October 1st, 2024, 22:51You can switch your job at any time at your Mog House. I didn't feel like it was telling me anything useful tbh, and just wanted to jump into actually playing the game. So I guess it's just the aspect of not having to buy or maintain gear yet still doing damage on par with others.
