Banquet for Fools - new game from the developers of Serpent in the Staglands and Copper Dreams aka Mechajammer

Post by wndrbr »

Seems like it takes place in the same universe as Serpent in Staglands.

Explore the island of Invimona in this open-world adventure with four generated companions. Depending on the stats given to them they'll each have unique choices in dialogue with NPCs and amongst each other as they bond over the course of the journey. You're assigned a pack-boro for your mission, who can carry a boat as well as extra items you pick up along the way, and together you all can hike and portage around the Invimona rivers and sea.

Visit towns for clues and to stock your party with unique items. As a guard you will be asked for assistance as you meet various farmers, scribes, artisans and even Gadaars among the holds. In the five years since the island was settled, grave robbers have flocked to Invimona like vultures, and ensuring they find their way to Exile Island is a constant battle.

There is no auto-compass or quest logs for you in Banquet for Fools, though many quests and requests are given to you in scrolls. Navigating the island effectively is a part of the challenge of quests.

Comes out in early access in less than two weeks. Let's hope they are not going to burn through their resources by changing game's visual style every few months.

Artstyle feels like it's trying very hard to ape planescape torment vibes, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Looks decent enough from the video tho

Seems interesting, the video sold me on it for now, especially like the "magic forest with twinkling lights and fantasy music" look of one of the level shown, reminds me a bit of Brave Dwarves which is a game I really liked. Hope it will turn out ok!

The combat system is a unique approach.
Looks quite ugly though. Only thing I can say is that it reminds me of stop-motion characters & sets, but still ugly.

"Pagan" as a stat?

Overall I like the look of it. For me the stop motion plasticine does not detract from the visuals, and the environment / enemy design is good enough to carry it even if it did. The characters do need a bit of work though. They look like Morrowind npcs but uglier.

At 0:32 he summons a bridge(from roots?) to walk across the water, that's the kind of stuff I like to see in CRPGs.

You mean you think an RPG should be more than just "Bam", "Pow", "Woosh!"? Showing your age Rusty!

According to one of the devs, they were going for a "claymationy, sort of Dark Crystal vampire vibe" so I could see how mixing those up could end up looking similar.

Am I the only one that feels indifferent to this.
Though you probably made a joke about how they kept changing the artstyle of their previous games a lot.

It does. You need to look for "Download PC Demo" above the information what kind of game it is

Well, this game could and will most likely be considered woke. No, there is no Body Type A or B. There is a sex slider instead. But women and men do not have the same stats.

Act 1 starts off with Asal and servants carrying offerings but are interrupted by a quake from the Temple/Castle. Asal turns around to see the Castle spewing forth a wave of blood. Everyone gets killed by possessed people but Asal skillfully kills them.
Image
Then this birdwoman approaches and kisses Asal on the Forehead and flies away.
Image
We come across dozens of dead people while multiple possessed stand above them, Asul kills them quick. I like how the game looks so far.
Image
After killing a few of the possessed and making headway to the Castle, two worshippers approach and ask for help. Asal obliges and we continue to the castle.
Image
There are Kots in this game, very nice.
After we reach the gates of the castle, the two worshippers couldn't escape "him" and went possessed, Asul promised to kill them swift.
Image
This could be the BBEG of the game but we don't know yet.

When you are in dialogues, each option is said by a different member of the group, pretty cool tbh.

I just started the Demo myself, though I am not sure how long should I play as this is definetly a game I'd like to try and do not want to re-do everything once it comes out.

I am really liking the artstyle, it gives a sort of visceral feel that I really like. The movements and actions (with a wheel)
► Show Spoiler
are very fluid and I am loving those as well. It doesn't have hand-holding that I can see, and the party acts by itself thus far that I noticed with AI, though you can set the leader of the group and what stance they should have (evade combat, charge in, etc) with three slots for each.
► Show Spoiler
The menus are interactible and move and react to the mouse as old games used to do, which is another thing that I really love
► Show Spoiler
You can also decide to set to kill or to stun the enemies with fully animated icon switch (bottom left)
► Show Spoiler
The rest Finarfin already detailed, my own experience so far is pretty positive and I can see myself exploring every nook and cranny of this.
It also had a cat appear on a bridge right at the beginning when switching areas and I tried to speak to it to see what the game would say but I... I misclicked. The good news is that, though I have a fang and some fur, the cat is stunned and still alive.

Btw, the demo isn't long. If you go create your party, that's it. Atleast I didn't see a way to proceed since my Character said "Alas this would take us beyond the demo"
But just for fun I attacked the NPC there and fought with him. It said I committed crimes against that NPC and when he died my character said "None the wiser" and the crimes were dropped since there are no witnesses.
