I've managed to play and finish every mainline Ultima except IX and every time I feel the odd yen to play it I just go play Gothic instead.
Tbh after I managed to get the day 1 patch (I lacked intranetz back then) I also liked it for a brief moment. But man, that was definitely a taste of things to come.
Edit: I also bought M&M IX on release day. Best cRPG ever.

...why each time I sarcastically call M&M IX best cRPG ever someone answers seriously?
And I often tell tales about the game. The Beet Hoven. The geese dungeon. And how to forget the innovative "End game lever"? When you reach the endgame (and I assure you, you have absolutely no idea the game is about to end) after killing a not so impressive but very comically modelled NPC, you pull a lever in the midst of le ebil ritual room and the game ends. Literally.
People should at least watch a LP of it. One of the uncanniest gayming experience in my life.

[edit]
The two expansions, Shadows of Undrentide & Hordes of the Underdark were fairly good at least.
Finished Metroid II: Return of Samus many years after a handful of false starts as a kid. Of course I cheated by using a map, there was no way I was going to make sense of this blindly. It was mostly all right until the missile-sponge Zeta and Omega Metroids, what a pain they were to fight. The Metroid Queen was also exhausting; I had like 30 missiles left when I started out with 220. The leisurely exit with the baby Metroid was worth it though, in contrast to the other games where it's always a rush before everything explodes. Unfortunately I was 23 minutes over 3 hours, so I didn't get to see Samus in her underwear; the map just showed me where everything was, not what the most efficient routes were, and I had to do a bit of backtracking in a few places.
Finished Eidos Montreal's Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (yep, another one of those days). Really self-indulgent AAA game; it starts off by allowing you to listen to an entire album of original 80s metal pastiche while reading along to the lyrics in the liner notes. That Steam Award for Best Soundtrack was well-deserved. I also saw that they voice-acted this thing in nine additional languages which is impressive given how much dialogue there is. There are a lot of places where you can stay in place and hear characters talking to each other for minutes.
The gameplay loop itself is a bit limited and exhausting: listen to bants, traverse with the occasional small side excursion, big arena fights with enemies that are spongy if you just attack them normally to encourage using your team's abilities when they're not on cooldown, environmental props, and your guns' special ammo to exploit specific weaknesses. Think I would have liked it more if the level design were less linear.
The writing was very Millennial i.e. a lot of characters stating the obvious and being disgustingly open with their emotions. Peter Quill is very specifically in his 40s but he looks, acts, and sounds like such a manchild (though this was also true for movie-Quill, this takes it much further). Gamora had a very aggravating voice as well. No explicit politics though thankfully, just a standard adventure about loss and surrogate family.
It was "only" 24 hours long, but like I said, it was exhausting. Fine just playing it the once even though there's narrative and minor-gameplay reactivity from making different choices.

Getting started on Armored Core: Fires of Rubicon. The game had gotten a lot of hype and FROM said they were "using the things they had learned from Elden Ring and the Souls series," so I was expecting an open or semi open world and was surprised that it's just a regular Armored Core game with discrete missions. But it's better that way. So far it seems good, but the mission design will dictate how good it is. It plays smoother than the older AC games, feels like Daemon X Machina with a fresh coat of paint which isn't a bad thing.

I almost 100 percented the game and completed all main + DLC content. I guess the bug preventing me from forging Sol whatever did filter me yes. Played the demo for "Mother Encore", a fan re-imagining of the original Mother/Earthbound Beginnings. Despite not being a fan of these games, their creator, or the fan community surrounding them, this game is surprisingly competent and superior to the official games (At least Earthbound, the only one I bothered to play). The modern engine being used affords the game a faster pace and a level of polish not seen in prior instalments, and the sprite work and animation is top-tier. It looks very much like what an official remake would turn out to be, which is something I wouldn't say for most fan projects.
The game is also quite challenging, the last boss of the demo being a particular highlight in the number of times it kicked my ***, before I started grinding a bit. The dialogue is also lighthearted and enjoyable enough to read, without it degenerating into reddit-tier "quirkyness" or memes. That is one thing most of these sorts of projects cannot resist, so I'm happy it isn't the case here, at least in the demo. Bonus points goes to having a native Linux executable, which is nice to see. Overall I'm looking forward to playing the final game, when it releases in 2040.
