Also, I'm glad that @aweigh came out of his protective cocoon for once and played ball. Japs are still sick in the head though.

I have soft spot for Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. Although I'm usually not a fan of Steampunk settings, it is so well realized in-game that it ended up being a breath of fresh air over a genre chock-full fantasy cRPGs.

As it's not "my favorite CRPG of all time", the answer is obvious.

It's Ultima Underworld.
The only CRPG that comes close to its influence on the genre — hell, video game industry — is Wizardry. You can't throw a rock without hitting a game influenced by Ultima Underworld.
Dungeon master comes close to that, much earlier.

But as my all-time favorite, I pick Baldur's Gate 3, which learns from its predecessors and sublimely elevates the genre with excellent tactical combat and the highest production values in every aspect.

Pool of Radiance

(The original one released in 1988 by SSI, which kicked off the Gold Box series, not the Ruins of Myth Drannor that came out later.)

Threads like these are a fool's errand. I have no one favorite. It would be impossible to narrow it down to one, definitive crpg above all others.

Another update, and yet not a single Morrowind, no JCD Ex, but Dragon Age: Origins is creeping closer. This table is more similar to the RPG Ranking Thread than I expected though. @Jordy Same but different.

ATOM RPG
@Hauberk updated my choice to ATOM RPG.
I was in a complete gaming funk when I found it, almost convinced I hated RPGs. Made me realize I don't hate RPGs, I just hate the people making ****** RPGs. It might not be the best game, but it has a very special place for me due to this
Thank you for your attention to this matter!

I know what I said, but someone should pay service to Betrayal At Krondor and I get the feeling no one else is going to do it.

So put me down for BaK because it comes pretty **** close.

Jagged Alliance 2 though arguably it's more an eco-sim

Fallout if we count "pure" RPGs :turtle:

Ephesians 6:12 KJV. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places

Is the game good for someone who's a fan of the books?

I assume so, I've never read them. Neil Hallford wrote the story for the game and Feist gave the final okay. Feist eventually novelized it along with what were going to be the sequels. There are couple of tidbits in the game that make more sense to someone who's read the books, I know that much, but you don't need to read them to enjoy the game. I also know that people who are fans of the books are happy to see old characters alive again since Feist is fond of bumping them off.

I was under the impression both this game and the books were based off a TT Homebrew RPG he would play with his friends. I have a vague memory of him repeatedly saying that he got permission from his fellow TT members to write the books.

I gave this some consideration and while I'd call JA2 a role-playing game because it has all the aspects of one (wargame + detailed units known as characters; see early D&D, especially the original campaigns run by the creators and their friends) I decided to disqualify it based on the questionable notion that it strays a bit from the illusive cRPG formula. Lilura hates me. But then again, Lilura features Quake on her cRPG blog.. How the mighty are fallen!

Fallout it is, @Thor.

@pol_345polex Another one for BG2.

Interesting that Morrowind is #1 on the other ranking thread and doesn't even have a vote here.
