Might and Magic
Wizardry

eXoAppleIIGS is lite and has a large list of games.
eXoDOS Lite is on demand, so you can select all your games from the library for playing later, if you have the space... full version will give you everything.

Wizardry VII (not gold), but its a bit much if you aren't familiar.
Might and Magic II is good, III and World of Xeen are really fun.
Gold Box (pool of radiance) is a classic and the others are good as well.
Also, if you want adventure games... Kings Quest I/II/III are keyboard focused, Same with Space Quest I/II/III (they are all type your actions similar to Zork games)
It was the golden era of DOS games, so too many good games.

Any traditional roguelike. I used to play a ton of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup on my laptop.
Legends of Amberland 1+2 for some more recent games

If you have a trackpad or nub then turn-based strategy games could also work, though I imagine it wouldn't be the most comfortable experience.
Open General is a freeware "remake" of Panzer Genral 2 and contains a shitload of campaigns, both copies of official ones and fanmade ones.
For games that work on a keyboard:
Shovel Knight
Risk of Rain
Endless Sky
Raptor: Call of the Shadows

Hell yeah, thanks for reminding me of Risk of Rain; I bought Returns when it released and I kinda dropped it after unlocking the super sikrit survivor, but I still have to complete the Trials and unlock all items. 100% enjoyable with your laptop on your balls rendering you infertile as the heat fries your sperm production.gerey wrote: ↑ August 24th, 2024, 19:39If you have a trackpad or nub then turn-based strategy games could also work, though I imagine it wouldn't be the most comfortable experience.

Never played it, but I would imagine so. All the early DOS games were setup for keyboard focus and if it used mouse, it was often for "support" due to the changing time. Many of the flight games like F-16 Falcon and so on were keyboard focused.

The mouse is like a handicap, so its better to learn a rts on hotkeys. Might need to mod for expanded, commands, depends on the game.gerey wrote: ↑ August 24th, 2024, 19:39If you have a trackpad or nub then turn-based strategy games could also work, though I imagine it wouldn't be the most comfortable experience.

Weirdest cracker you know.
Well, mouse certainly dominates. Depends though, playing Doom keyboard was king. It has been a while, but I think Duke I can't remember, I want to say it mouse dominated, but it has been a while and Quake/Unreal, if you weren't using a mouse, you were getting destroyed. Being able to be mid air and swing around and tag someone while you were falling was game changing.maidenhaver wrote: ↑ August 25th, 2024, 05:07The mouse is like a handicap, so its better to learn a rts on hotkeys. Yes but how do you micro your units without a mouse?maidenhaver wrote: ↑ August 25th, 2024, 15:21In shooters, but in rts, if you're clicking widgets and scrolling with a mouse, you're too slow.
Absolutely. RTS dominance was always about hotkey play.maidenhaver wrote: ↑ August 25th, 2024, 15:21In shooters, but in rts, if you're clicking widgets and scrolling with a mouse, you're too slow.

spelunky
anything on a gba emulator
I once spent several days leveling a WoW character with a laptop trackpad. I can't recommend this though.
You can't micro effectively without rapid accurate mouse movement though. RTS is heavily dependent on both peripherals.Xenich wrote: ↑ August 26th, 2024, 14:00Absolutely. Of course, that goes without saying, but the point was more that hotkey play is the difference between an average/good RTS player and a great one. As @maidenhaver pointed out, some aspects of play require hotkey use to excel at, otherwise you are far too slow.Silvanus wrote: ↑ August 26th, 2024, 14:29I once spent several days leveling a WoW character with a laptop trackpad. In FPS games, Doom is all about keyboard, if you are playing with a mouse, you lose, but Quake is the reverse, mouse is king.
I can't stand most modern FPS's though, they are all "controller" designed (iron sight, cover positions, auto-aiming, etc...) because a controller is the worst input to use for an FPS game.
