Could someone explain to me why this game was so hated before it came out? Because it was about a mythological monkey character or something and nignogs thought that meant the slants were making fun of them? I don't understand what the problem is. This looks so basic ***** that I don't see how anyone could be offended by it.
They didn't take Sweet Baby Inc. money. And they also refused to put women into the game, unless they fit the story.

Why would they bow to demands(by whom? are we still pretending some random social media post was real?) when it's not even from their core audience?
KCD did it years prior and when it was from the people they were actually marketing the game towards. KCD was actually good, too, so there's that.
Maybe you're aware of this, maybe not?

Last year, IGN made this hit piece:
https://www.ign.com/articles/how-black- ... o-the-west

So, it's already on the record that wokies went after this studio and demanded compliance/apologies for basically nothing.

Again, how does that interfere when its target audience is not the west? Do you guys think westerners are actually buying this?

This is like praising a western studio that wasn't targeting china for supporting hong kong a couple years ago. Wow, they did the thing that didn't cost them any sales in their target market! So brave!

Basically, there was a story that supposedly a super woke Western consultant company called Sweet Baby Inc demanded 7 million dollars from Game Science - the studio that made this game - in order to pozzle and wokify the game, something that would had made this game yet another flop.

However the Chinese developers told SBI to **** off and refused the extortion, either because they are truly passionate about making games or because they fear the CCP more than overseas angry Twitter users. But in any case, SBI and their jurno "allies" being the adult-babies they are began to smear and accuse Game Science of being -ists and -phobes like they usually do in hopes that this game would fail.

Some doubt the veracity of this story, but I personally believe that regardless if it was true or not, Game Science still made it clear that they don't care about feminism or Western politics in general, which I reckon is the main reason why this game succeeded so much.

The source of the story was a random social media post from someone unrelated to the company. "Anti-SJW" westerners said it was a journalist because they don't know what weibo is and thought it was a news outlet.

It succeeded because chinese people are buying a chinese product based on chinese mythology. Anyone who thinks westerners are factoring into this at all is overdosing on some serious copium.

As insane as the developers who think they'll get the same success just by pandering to China — they won't, because they're not Chinese.

English:
Full audio

The only other language with full audio is Chinese.

If they weren't banking on some western sales, they wouldn't have taken the trouble of doing full audio in English.

Do you have the sales figures? Even judging by the bandwidth data, about 1/4-1/3rd of the sales were probably from western countries.

Seems to be around 11000 user reviews on steam in English.

This is not a "culture war" victory because it was never part of the culture war. China dances to the beat of its own drum, it's not on anyone's side.

[EDIT]
And this is with every single language except simplified & traditional Chinese enabled

Non-Chinese don't even make up 10% of the total reviews.

It's still a possibility that the game sold 200k+ copies to Western markets, I'd say that's pretty good for a Chinese studio. That might even be unprecedented for a Chinese game.

DMC is well known for totally-not-bonfires that you rest at and respawn enemies, definitely one of those staple features of the subgenre.

according to reviews you lose nothing when you die in black myth nor does gameplay revolve around dying and gaining knowledge, and a lot of bosses can be killed first go. So yeah a GOW checkpoint system doesn't seem to count

What I find funny is how a game where you play as a mythology monkey is the most played game ever on Steam. Meanwhile every ******* game made with lesbians, ********, feminism, girl bosses, race swaps, "black girl magic", and emasculated male leads have all bombed and lost money despite the fact that they all had the backing of BlackRock behind them.

Turns out the only people that care about representation and "being seen" are attention starved liberal women and homosexuals.

Even if you don't care for souls-likes, you should be glad to see studios be hugely successful delivering titles that don't bow to the demands of the woke mob.

I heard it's less of a souls-like and more like GoW, or DmC, so if you don't consider souls-likes to be RPGs, this game definitely isn't one either.

Yes, you are correct and rusty is wrong with his steam stat post.

Chinese users have to use Steam China, regular Steam is blocked in China for the same reason GitHub can't be reached: China wants every website on their internet to comply with their laws. There are some ways to get around that, however. Basically chinese steam users are in a constant game of whack-a-mole with their authorities to find loopholes to access the normal steam store. China also limits the time you are allowed to play games each day and yes, they do enforce that and yes, it's as pettily evil as it sounds.

So, if rusty said was true (it's nonsense by the way) then there should be next to no reviews or ratings in the western Steam version. While total purchase and user data is combined (see rusty's picture) from Steam and Steam China, the storefronts, ratings and reviews are kept separate due to the obvious language barriers.

TL;DR: rusty's just coping and the game's a success. (The notion that China somehow manages to overtake the rest of the world combined for a video game is frankly delusional anyway.)

Edit: I should also point out that "other languages" includes more than just Chinese. I checked my Steam library just now to confirm my suspicion and every single game has more "other language" reviews than English reviews. Again, it's on language against the rest of planet Earth. Same goes for rusty's download and playtime stats: 3-4 pm in the US is 3-4 am in China. If we were to assume those players are all Chinese then apparently the a significant portion of the Chinese market plays games on 3 am. This is a logic I would question.

On the other hand the playtime and download stat spikes line up much more neatly with teenagers and young adults getting home from work in the US, which is where I would suspect this data is pointing.

If there is one thing to be happy about with this game is that it completely humiliated the Western game industry. There is so much *** hurt and cope right now from Western devs and game journoscum over this game on places like X and RetardEra. You think they wouldn't care given that the main audience for this game is Chinese gamers. However, it is full on cope and panic right now with Western devs and journoscum. I'm pretty sure that a lot of the players on the Steam charts are Chinese as Rusty stated, however, if there wasn't a sizable Western audience playing this game I don't think we would be seeing so much panic and cope from Western devs and game journoscum as we have these past few days.

Remember that the refrain for their diverse **** failing is always that evil Whitey won't play games not based on his own mythology. This game just proves that games based on non-western myth can succeed anyway, showing that the reason their trash keeps failing has to be a different one.

To be clear, you think this random Chinese game developed by a company nobody in this thread can name got more than 2.5x Elden Ring's peak player count because of teens and young adults in the US (while admitting that most reviews are not in English)?

I did a python script to scrap the 1000 reviews in steam and estimate the languages of the game ( to scrap all reviews would take from 6 to 14 hours with a refresh rate of 1 sec, according to my calculations ), over 75% of the reviews are in Chinese. The second most common language is "unknown". LOL

Agreed. I could care less about this game. However, seeing Western game devs and their pet journoscum go into full on panic and cope over this game has been the best enjoyment I've gotten in a while. Rebekah Valentine of IGN is crying and coping on RetardEra over this game doing well. Other Western devs and journoscum have been lashing out at this game and anyone calling them out. It is great to see. Probably better enjoyment than the game but it has been a long time coming.

I did just tell you that the majority of reviews for every game I looked at on Steam are not in English. Even BG3, which was a huge hit in the west, has more non-English reviews that English ones on Steam. Do you think there was a huge Chinese conspiracy to more than double the reviews for that game? The number isn't quite as skewed, obviously, because Larian is a western developer, but the point still stands.

Also, let's not pretend the game didn't have a bunch of online advertising, hype and controversy surrounding it. Calling it a random game as if no-one ever heard of it before today is silly.

I also explained in the previous post that the stats on Steam are global (minus the Steam China reviews and ratings).

The US gaming market is huge, no question. It's probably either the largest or second largest market, fighting with China for the top spot.

And there lies the problem: rusty's entire argument rests on the assumption that this is China vs US player/reviewer numbers, as if the rest of the planet was just observing. Japan, for example, is roughly half the US market just by itself unless I misremember.

Point being: Those steam stats also contain players from countries other than the US or China. A significant portion of which are also in the west because the west is more than just the US.

TL;DR: Stop assuming everything on Earth revolves around the US.

Also, I would question why this discussion is happening at all. You'd think a game devoid of the usual nonsense would be a good thing even if it was made in China. rusty's entire argument about "westerners don't buy this game!" falls apart the second anyone checks the player numbers during China's least active hours. I'd expect the trend should mirror that of western games but reversed, so somewhere between 500k and 1M active players, a little less than half the peak at most. Those would be a significant portion of the westerners who, according to rusty, shouldn't exist. Hell, those 380k on his stats shouldn't be there at all.

It is great to see. Probably better enjoyment than the game but it has been a long time coming.
Seeing journos cry is one of my favorite pastimes. RetardEra is a cesspool of the worst wokies who used to plague NeoGAF. Yes, I know NeoGAF's owner is also a ******, but these people somehow managed to be worse.

I look forward to a game actively insulting their most cherished beliefs and causing mass resignations and breakdowns amongst our "gaming elite".

In all seriousness though, current year gaming journos are scum and no-one should respect them ever. There is a reason ******* YouTube reviewers are kicking their collective asses.

as long as journos are seething who gives a ****
Agreed, but I would prefer if this game was a much bigger success in the west, to make journos even more butthurt. I'm just saying that most of its success is in China. And BTW, an industry infected with Frankfurt neo-Marxism deserves to die, collapse, and be replaced. I hope that more and more Asian studios and Slavic studios will take the space from the ESG Commiefornia Manjaw industrial complex.
