Loathe to part with an email account over 20 years old that I still use, and no desire to use gmail is my reason.
Also a lot of places seem to not transmit to Protonmail so even though I have one of those I can't use it for a bunch of ****.
I have probably around 15-20 gmail accounts as they still haven't fixed the "bug" where you can generate new accounts with any Android device without needing to register with a phone number. I'd argue a good, possibly even moral reason to horde gmail accounts is to abuse their diskspace via the 15GB of free cloud storage that each account offers. I don't really use any of them for personal correspondence, but I have no guilt grifting their storage and because I make sure to archive and encrypt everything before uploading it's not like they're getting anything of value out of me datawise.
how do you do that exploit? i've had two previous google accounts banned and don't currently have an extra phone number at hand to use if i were to get my current account banned, so having a spare would be handy.
You need an Android tablet or to emulate an Android tablet on your computer with a VM. Then you basically just register an account to the device which will enable the account as tied to the tablet and then factory reset the device or otherwise wipe it and then just do it again and again. Each time you'll get a new account which can be used like any other normal gmail account.

Do gmail edu accounts even have a cloud storage cap? I have some with 20TB+ with no issues (obv no personal info either, just backing freely/available stuff on the web).
You used to be able to buy legacy Google team drive accounts off of Ebay for like $5-10 a pop which each had unlimited storage for basically forever, but the kicker was you had to trust the rando who owned the primary team drive first to actually give you access and then to not revoke access or otherwise get the account deleted. This was heavily abused for a long time in the Warez scene, but eventually Google got wise to it and cracked down on all the accounts using it and now there are only a few left which are closely guarded.

Uh, had no idea they were so rare now. Thankfully mine has only ever been exposed to personal use, so as long as they don't look at storage used per user
jokes aside, Japan seems to love Yahoo, so at least that would have been a plausible explanation for your preference.
