PSA: Stop using Hotmail

Post by rusty_shackleford »

Did you know Hotmail still exists? I sure didn't. I also wish they didn't.
If you use Hotmail, you will not receive any emails from RPGHQ. They shitlist any emails sent from our email delivery platform. When I get some free time I'll see about migrating to an email delivery service that has a smaller shitlist. Until then, don't lose your password, Hotmail users.

And before someone asks "why do you use a third party email delivery service?", because absolutely every email provider will shitcan emails sent from random domains. Using your own server to send emails hasn't been viable for at least 10 years now. Email is complete garbage and I hate it.

Are they paying you for this sponsorship?

Interesting, what's your platform?
Hotmail is now essentially Outlook.com, though the addresses remain.

Is the issue on outlook's end, or the sender's?

Elder millennials (80s era) grew up with the internet too, ya know. :P

@rusty_shackleford What sort of e-mails does the HQ send? Besides password resets and (presumed) topic subscriptions. Though didn't you switch off the latter? I remember seeing something about that a while ago.

It is, however "hotmail" is now Outlook.com for general consumer use. Those with hotmail addresses can still login and use it, though.

Password resets is the important one. I disabled email verification for registration ages ago because not enough emails would get delivered, and it's not even necessary tbh.
Might look into providing rudimentary Steam integration and using a Steam chat bot to handle it as an alternative. Seems likely that most people using this site(>95%?) have a Steam account.

hmm. Sometimes I've caught it just outright binning the e-mails into Deleted Items (never used to do this, ffs).
I presume otherwise sometimes they don't get received at all (or even sent?). Gimme a shout if you need to test anything with it.

As long as the Steam stuff is optional (and non-public) then more options are always good.

true story my first email was [email protected]

Sadly I didn't realize what a get I had with that, pre-word filters and stuff. I unfortunately let it die out and it's long since been lost to time. Registered it around 25 years ago, give or take.

Probably. I'm going to look into moving to a better service at some point in the future.

I mean, if you want to go integrate other services to attenuate the problem beyond Steam there is FB, Twitter, Gmail, Reddit, Github, Outlook, Discord, Twitch, etc. But I'd think this site's userbase might be the type to shy away from using stuff like that to login.

I did register an account using one of my old hotmail accounts and had no issues receiving communication from the RPGHQ email

Good news, I am a new user and the confirmation email went straight to my junk mail so therefore I could find it!

I am now going to test account recovery emails. edit: THOSE WORK TOO!

Imagine using Hotmail in 2024 instead of @nuke.africa or @goat.si. Even the plebs over at @genocide.fun and @hatesje.ws have built a better email server than Hotmail ever was.

Could you please explain the details of the problem to an internet backend ignoramus (me).

Like what is an email delivery platform, and what is it that you use, and why it would be blacklisted by Microsoft?
You may as well not bother replying to my posts if it's to argue anything except concrete facts or your personal opinion. I still probably won't see it.

Also a lot of places seem to not transmit to Protonmail so even though I have one of those I can't use it for a bunch of ****.

Email delivery platforms are the backend for email providers like Hotmail and so forth. They actually route email traffic through the internet. All the major delivery platforms make use of spam filtering services.

The biggest one I know of is called Spamhaus. Spamhaus maintains a "curated" list of email providers, email IP ranges, email addresses and so forth that it considers spam and/or malicious. Email delivery platforms check that list before they start routing mail from a provider. If an email fits the criteria it never gets delivered. There is no message to the sender or anything like that, it just quietly disappears into the ether.

Their purpose is supposed to be to filter out obviously malicious or junk emails. Practically speaking, what that means is filtering services like Spamhaus have a chokehold on email delivery, because they have a very wide-ranging net on what they consider spam or malicious. If you're not playing ball with the big email services (in other words, if you host your own email service/server, or if you take stances on privacy (protonmail) that others don't like), you're going to have problems getting email delivered. Your only option is to pay Spamhaus to "inspect" your delivery service and whitelist it. It's basically a para-governmental protection racket.

Hotmail in particular I would guess is basically completely shitlisted simply because it is so often used to send phishing, junkmail and malware delivery via throwaway accounts. If I had to guess, Microsoft has never bothered to get into it with Spamhaus because they're focused on Outlook, and hotmail issues provide a bonus of potentially shifting customers to their flagship email platform.

Rusty may feel free to correct me on any of this, I'm aware of the sweeping view but I've never gotten into the woods with this before.

I have probably around 15-20 gmail accounts as they still haven't fixed the "bug" where you can generate new accounts with any Android device without needing to register with a phone number. I'd argue a good, possibly even moral reason to horde gmail accounts is to abuse their diskspace via the 15GB of free cloud storage that each account offers. I don't really use any of them for personal correspondence, but I have no guilt grifting their storage and because I make sure to archive and encrypt everything before uploading it's not like they're getting anything of value out of me datawise.

Also, they're likely to get broken up soon. The antitrust judge really doesn't like them.

Do gmail edu accounts even have a cloud storage cap? I have some with 20TB+ with no issues (obv no personal info either, just backing freely/available stuff on the web).

how do you do that exploit? i've had two previous google accounts banned and don't currently have an extra phone number at hand to use if i were to get my current account banned, so having a spare would be handy.
