I don't think there is any particular correlation. The ratio is probably the same across genres, the difference being that Nintendo and videogames are huge so the ***** fans are more visible. As for why people make Metroidvanias, they're easy for a single person to develop, since once you have some basic programming down the rest of the work is just making some assets and then them to create levels. So again because it's overall popular the ****** are more visible.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ July 12th, 2024, 20:21what's the reason ******** love "metroidvanias" so much?

I think it's partly down to the mechanic of autistically ruminating over the map again and again until you have explored every pixel.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ July 12th, 2024, 20:21what's the reason ******** love "metroidvanias" so much?

Nintendie effect and a lot of metroidvanias have female protags with Samus probably being the ur-example of the "female character who is masculine in every aspect but physical" character type.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ July 12th, 2024, 20:21what's the reason ******** love "metroidvanias" so much?

Speedrunning.
****** area drawn to speedrunning like flies to ****, and most metroidvanias tend to be built around the idea of speedrunning and sequence breaking.

Speedrunning sucks because it has no real formalized rules. It should be completing the game as fast as you can the way it's supposed to be played it shouldn't count if you downgrade the game to version 1.0 so you can do a glitch where if you tbag a wall you can fly out of the map into the final level.

Stumbled across an interesting passion project that has been in early access for just under a decade.
He describes it(well, what he's working towards) as 'Daggerfall in space'.

They usually have very strict rules, with different categories for a given game depending on what ruleset you prefer.

In general the idea of mastering a game to the point of being able to beat it in a very short amount of time is good. Provided the game is interesting mechanically, i.e. in order to beat it faster you're actually required to be good at combat, to know the exact items that you need for progression, to know the map layout and the most optimal routes, to know how the movement system works, etc etc.
Watching glitchless speedruns of games that are gameplay-rich and have a non-linear progression is interesting, because you can see all the various optimized ways of dealing with or avoiding enemy encounters, unusual sequence breaking (see fallout 1-2), ways of abusing game's mechanics in order to become more powerful earlier (see morrowind), and so on. Not sure why would anyone watch speedruns of linear cinematic shooters where the player just repeats the same actions ad nauseam, or the glitched speedruns where the player humps the wall at the exact spot in order to get out of bounds and skip half of the content.

The fact the majority of speedrunners ***** out tells you all you need to know about speedrunning.

Played the demo just now. I can definitely say mission accomplished.
Because it's ****.
I just watch speedrunning documentaries. The actual runs themselves aren't very interesting (and all streamers are ******* in general), but I like seeing how people conspire to find new tricks and autistically devote thousands of hours trying to beat a game 1 second faster.

reddit thread where redditors out themselves as not having an internal monologue and thinking video game characters who constantly talk to themselves is normal
Yeah it seems super natural and relatable. We all do that kind of thing out in the world. It also breaks up the monotony of the long stretches of travel.
I assume most women don't have an internal monologue

I hate the Antichrist!
I'm starting to realise that I absolutely hate most turn-based games, especially JRPGs. The genre is incredibly monotonous and boring to play, yet I forced myself repeatedly because I am told these were some of the "greatest games ever made". Perhaps they are, but they're not made for me. The only genre where turn-based gameplay is appealing to me, are turn-based tactical games like Shining Force and the GBA Fire Emblems. Everything else can pound sand as far as I am concerned.

Is it the lack of depth in the average JRPG turn-based battle system itself or the repetition of essentially the same fight via random encounters that you are dissatisfied with?KnightoftheWind wrote: ↑ July 14th, 2024, 13:14I'm starting to realise that I absolutely hate most turn-based games, especially JRPGs. A lot of older JRPGs don't have much variety in your choice of actions. This was also true of many western games of the time like Shard of Spring as well.
