New York AG attempts to intimidate Valve into collecting more data

When worlds collide. There are like three different threads I could post this in, decided on this one.

New York Attorney General Letitia James wrote:
Valve, a video game developer, has made billions of dollars by letting children and adults illegally gamble for the chance to win valuable virtual prizes.

These features are addictive and harmful.

That's why I'm suing to stop Valve’s unlawful conduct and protect New Yorkers.

The NYAG also proposed to gather additional information (beyond what we normally collect in the course of processing payments) about each game user on the off-chance someone in New York was anonymizing their location to appear outside of New York, such as by using a VPN. This would have involved implementing invasive technologies for every user worldwide. Similarly, the NYAG demanded that Valve collect more personal data about our users to do additional age verification—even though most payment methods used by New York Steam users already have age verification built-in. Valve knows our users care about the security of their personal information, and we believe it’s in our and their interest to only collect the information necessary to operate the business and comply with law.

Game sizes got to the point where they needed to ship on 5+ DVDs and most people buying computer parts had no interest in a blu-ray drive, so they don't even include an internal bay for them on most cases anymore, gotta go external.

I remember getting the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe game by Traveller's Tales for PC. It came on 4 discs and I had to be attending to the computer swapping out the discs just to install it. And then when I wanted to play it, I had to put the play disc in. All of that for just one game. I couldn't imagine if for all of the games I play or check out, that I had to be there attending to the computer and taking cases off of my bookshelf and then swapping all of these installation discs in and out, and then needing to put in a play disc whenever I want to play a different game. The likelihood of those play discs being scratched each time I had to take them off of the shelf to play a different game for the day would be very high.

Yeah, I don't miss the physical aspect much at all. More shelf space, I'm not worried about losing the physical copy. And most importantly - even though people think this has changed - you were still only purchasing a license to use the media.

I suspect Steam will start allowing developers to sell physical copies that come with a box/feelies at some point. People yearn for the feelies.

Heh, I don't. I've never owned a physical disk of a game I didn't burn myelf or any kind of feely because I am a man of the sea. You can't have loose objects tumbling about the cabin at sea.
