If you like the xbox layout controllers, I spent about 25 dollars on gamesir nova lite and it works fine for what I use it for. But I barely use a gamepad.

It's kinda niche because it comes as a pair of peripherals, but it's pretty good.

My trusty controller is a wired razer wolverine V2 that has great buttons (tactile, great feedback when pressed) and feels overall great to hold. As for wireless I liked 8bitdo controllers (until I've gone full wired and never looked back).

Xbox elite pro 2 is over $100 but it has paddles and everything else.

The Vader 4 Pro is great if you like the Xbox design but want much higher quality components and analog sticks that don't drift after a month of use.

If you want something slightly cheaper the GameSir G7 is solid and is wired which may be a positive for some people.

Lastly I'd say the Switch Pro controllers are great quality and for me personally I think it has the best ergonomics. Downside is they don't have hall effect sticks like my previous recommendations which means you'll eventually get stick drift. If you're willing though you could replace the Switch Pro's default sticks with hall effect ones yourself.

@aweigh got me to buy an 8bitdo Ultimate 2 and I like it. Whatever you get, make sure it has back paddles/buttons.

Dualsense is my favorite controller for feel, but I switched to an Xbox controller because I had an opportunity to trade my used one for a new Xbox Series controller for better connectivity with pirated games

The Series controller is great especially with rotating rechargeable battery packs which I much prefer to charging the controller itself, the only downside is the buttons are loud and it has no gyro (which is irrelevant to me)

However I got a 8bitdo Ultimate 2C as a second controller to play with my kid and for the $30 price I absolutely recommend it over any first party controller, it doesn't have back paddles but it has an extra button next to each bumper/trigger. It's way better than I expected and I find myself using it often over the Xbox controller

I had a horrible time using Switch Pro controller on PC. Figuring joycons would be the same. Maybe I was doing it wrong or had to update firmware, but it required repairing for me via bluetooth every time and it was missing a lot of features. Couldn't even get it working well when plugged in via USB

I had a horrible time using Switch Pro controller on PC. Figuring joycons would be the same. It is a bit finicky at times. I don't believe that the Switch Pro controller uses xinput which creates problems with certain games. I've found that Steam input fixes a lot of those issues, in my case anyways. Certain emulators also have started natively supporting the Pro controller as well like PCSX2, Dolphin, and Duckstation which admittedly is what I mainly use a controller for. If someone wanted the most hassle free experience though a good xinput pad or one that lets you change inputs on the fly would probably be a better choice.

I think a lot of it had to do with the shape of the flat face itself. It's also extremely light which I didn't like at all. I went back to using the ps4 controller which while I'm not thrilled with has lasted for over 10 years at this point with no issues to speak of besides. At least the 8bitdo was only like 30 bucks. Honestly, I'm looking forward to the new steam controller. When I tried a steam deck, I ended up really liking those trackpads for games like Hotline Miami.

I've used a wired 360 controller for a long time now. Nothing better unless you want more buttons. Also you can buy and replace the sticks when you need to.
