Void War: FTL and WH40K's little mutant baby

Post by Eyestabber »

This game is a straight up clone of Klei's Faster Than Light but with a Warhammer 40k skin. Various mechanical improvements are also present, such as much improved boarding, no more fuel, rebalanced missiles, player avatar, spells and much, MUCH more. Steam scores are sitting at an impressive 92%, with "overwhelmingly positive" recent reviews. It's a fun game, but very frustrating when you die, just like FTL. I mean:

I liked it better than FTL, which I played for 60-70 hours over the years.

I put 12 hours into this one, beat it twice with the Exile, and am not coming back because I don't like playing the bad guy, which is the rest of the factions.

FTL is more polished but has a more generic setting, so it is boring now that it has competition. If I had had Void War a decade ago, I would have played that instead.

So now the question:
What genre is this? Steam has it labeled with "Roguelite, Space, Perma Death, Choices Matter" . Did not dig further.

I would call it "real time tactics", so same genre as Terminator: Dark Fate Defiance.

Can we improve on this? It has RPG elements and roguelike elements. "Roguelite" sounded good a decade ago, but now I consider the label too broad with too few features to be a genre.

Looks like it happened on the 21st. Here's what the devs posted on Steam.
ANNOUNCEMENT - Void War Temporarily Unavailable
Hi everyone,

Void War is temporarily unavailable on Steam. We’re working with Steam to resolve it and will share updates here when we can. Thanks for your patience.

Note that the game is still available to purchase on Itch.io: https://tundra-interactive.itch.io/void-war
I saw a comment that there is more discussion on their discord server.

I have zero insider knowledge, but considering how loose GW is with giving out its IP to seemingly any developer who asks for it, I'm surprised the dev didn't simply... well, ask. Maybe he did, and I don't know.

I bought the game on release and have enjoyed the little time I've put into it. Hopefully, something gets figured out.

Not aware of GW doing any takedown requests for content that is merely similar to theirs so I doubt it's GW tbh

Well, they did do some questionable things like calling units "psykers". If it is due to GW hopefully they can just change unit names or similar.

GW is permissive, but strict. They will grant the license to lower budget titles, but you will be limited to a narrow sunset of the IP, such as only two factions. Which is a shame because limited enemy variety is one of the things that has steered me away from buying some of their games.

Yet another gaming studio that feels the need to have a ******* Discord server. I seem to remember these guys are chingchongs as well. Maybe it's actually free speech there (until you start talking about Xi lol).

Yeah, I have no evidence that it was actually GW, I just felt like re-iterating they suck anyway.
I imagine a hard copyright threat would affect the itch.io release, too.

It's GW (related, anyway). They just posted this
ANNOUNCEMENT - Quick update on the Void War situation
Valve pulled Void War’s Steam page after a DMCA notice that says Games Workshop is claiming copyright infringement. Valve only gave us a public GW infringements inbox and the name “Mal Reynolds” (yes, like Firefly), and we have not gotten any response from GW when we emailed that inbox. So right now we can’t independently verify who submitted it beyond what’s in the notice.

We’re proceeding through the standard DMCA process to get the page back up, and we’ll post updates as soon as we have confirmed info.

Yeah, Synth goes into great detail about all the fuckups on the show. I'm not super well-versed in New Vegas stuff, so I can't really comment fully, but it's a lot of just... garbage writing that goes absolutely nowhere on top of obvious things like making the Legion some "white people/Trump bad" metaphor.

Yes.

These small Davids overpowered the GW Goliath with the single small stone of removing a trailer.
Hi everyone,

Void War is now back on Steam.

Here are new details on what happened.

To recap, the initial takedown was triggered by a DMCA notice attributed to Games Workshop. At the time, we could not independently verify the submitter beyond the name and contact email Valve included. The contact email was GW's public infringements inbox, and the name listed was “Mal Reynolds,” which is also a fictional character from the sci-fi TV show Firefly.

After over a week of no response, Games Workshop eventually replied to our email and confirmed the notice was theirs. They said their concern was limited to a specific shot from one of the trailers on the store page, arguing that certain elements could create the mistaken impression that Void War is associated with Games Workshop, specifically what they described as “the oversized convex shoulder pads with a metallic rim.”

All of the artwork in the trailer is original work created by our artists. While we disagree with their assessment, the simplest way to get the game back up and avoid getting bogged down in DMCA process was to remove that trailer and move on. We may re-upload an updated version later after we find time to adjust that shot, but for now our priority is shipping content and finishing multi-language font support so we can finally deliver proper translations.

Thanks for your patience, and thank you for the overwhelming support. o7 commanders.

ACCORDING TO ******* GOOGLE/GEMINI/WHATEVER

"Yes, Void War Games, the indie studio behind the game Void War, is based in Hong Kong SAR, China. The studio is known for developing the strategy game Void War, which was recently in the news for being pulled from Steam due to a copyright issue, notes IGN Southeast Asia."

Hoping for an update that introduces the color blue to the game. This game's art is so tiresome to look at, FTL did it far better.
