It looks great, but... (un)fortunately I can't read their alphabet, so I hope they'll dish out a decent translation.

As far as first impressions go, I spotted a few times the reflection in puddles wasn't fully rendered, but otherwise... it looks OK. I guess? It's really just a stinger. Not much substance there, so... not much to discuss about.

Cyrillic isn't that hard to learn. Russian language on the other hand, is slightly more complex. I really should go back to learning.

Tbh this game looks like a scam.

It was announced shortly after the war had started, and the gubermint was giving money left and right to the IT-related companies hoping to prevent computer specialists from leaving the country. Devs appeared out of nowhere and received a grant of 500M rubles (roughly $6M), despite only having some ****** concept art to show.

Well, time will tell. I hope it's not actually a scam, Times of Troubles is a really cool setting for a historical game.

Oh and btw even though at first glance it looks like a serious historical RPG, the actual basis for the story is a pulp novel from 19th century.

I have 0 faith in this game for multiple reasons just like i had 0 faith in Atomic Heart. Non the less i wish the devs all the best if they are legit about it. At least you can be 99% certain it won't be another woke trash.

I hope they will rethink their naming strategy. SMUTA is a really bad title.

Brother, we also had such "pulp novelist" called Henryk Sienkiewicz. Seems that the "historical novel" genre was kicking off at the time, with people of XIX century wanting to relive the events of past centuries.

Well yeah, in theory there's nothing wrong in basing your historical game on a fiction writing. Except it's supposed to be an RPG (or at least it's marketed as one), yet its story is going to be set in stone because in addition to the historical constraints the writers are also limited by the novel.

According to the interview, the main character is fixed (nobleman Yuri Miloslavskiy), his love interest is fixed, and the antagonist is also fixed. At this point it would be easier to make an action-adventure than an RPG.

At least Geralt and Henry could romance different chicks.

Witcher games are also all set after the books, so they have much more freedom than following a book.

Cyrillic can be learned in 30 mins-1 hour even for someone who's not familiar with it. As for learning, go find some hot hohol/moskal sluts and just starting to them, easy practice and you'll be conversational in few months.

As for the game, I still have some hope because I have a soft spot for rus jank. But looks like it's gonna be a typical modern game with lots of bling but no substance.

@Raccoon the first video is just a weekly news recap, only the second one has something of value.

Game's lead dev doesn't say anything particularly useful, the game is still very early into development so most of the stuff is just vague marketing BS.

Interesting points:

- the game won't feature an actual open-world (like in TES series or KCD), instead the world design will be hub-based - closer to something like The Witcher 1-2 or Bioware games. Each chapter of the game will be set in its own hub, and currently there are eight hubs planned.

- The game's storyline is based on a 19th century adventure novel "Yuri Miloslavskiy, or the Russians of 1612". Even though the story is set during the war between Russian Tsardom and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the villains are going to be not Poles or a Lithuanians, but a traitorous Russian nobility.

- looks like the combat/rpg system/c&c aren't set in stone yet, since the stuff he said was very vague - he didn't even state whether it'll have a full-blown action combat, or rtwp like in Dragon Age. Apparently, the game will have jrpg-like vocations, and vocation-specific weapons? That's pretty much it. He also promised that the game will have meaningful itemization (no color-coded diabloloot or whatever).

Someone have managed to steal a dev build of this game (dated apr 2023). It's not particularly playable (duh), but shows a lot of promise.

Has three hub maps implemented (with lots of placeholders, but still). 30% of the main quest is playable - devs probably implemented it to have something to show to investors. System-wise the game is similar to The Witcher 2, even has a ****** stealth mechanic that only works in one specific place lol. Combat is real-time and actiony, has dodges and parries.

It's easy to understand, but hard to formulate a response, because of their weird syntax. Joining drunkland telegram chats is the best way to go, as they won't mind your tarzan grammar.

We'll see, but tbh what would you do if you had a project and it turned out one (or more) of your employees working on it just steals it it and shares on the internet? Kinda hard to continue work knowing when you'll be close to release someone will just upload it online and butcher your income (it being in Russia is even more significant there being a rampant piracy).

It could be a good idea to cancel the project, hire other people and use the tech to make something else.

- It wasn't an employee who stole the WIP build. And it was a very early, essentially worthless build, with barely any quests and with only half of the locations implemented.
- they can't just cancel projects willy nilly just because someone leaked an early build. The game is backed by investors, so the devs must to release at least something, otherwise it would be a scam.
- thanks to Gabe, when it comes to videogames piracy in Russia is long gone. Atomic Heart wasn't listed on Steam in Russia, you had to register on VK Play store in order to buy it. Sounds like a recipe for a financial failure? Well no, the game actually sold really good and already recouped VK's $7M exclusivity bribe (i.e. as of March 2023 it sold around 250000+ copies in Russia and other CIS countries alone).

Devs created an official social media page, published their first "dev diary" video, and then answered a bunch of frequently asked questions.

Dev diary #1. They just blabber on about historical accuracy, not worth translating. You can skim through video to see some snippets of gameplay.

Interview

tl;dr
- no open world, the game will use hub zones instead. Though, some of those hubzones are going to be pretty large;
- no folklore creatures, magic or anything like that - the game will have a purely historical setting;
- you won't be able to romance Marina Mniszech and get an alternate history ending;
- some people have already called this game "a Russian KCD", devs felt pretty apprehensive about using such titles and asked fans to keep their expectations in check;
- around a 100 cutscenes are planned (dunno if that's a lot or very little, but sounds vaguely like a "cinematic Biowarian RPG 2005-2015");
- dev diary had a footage of combat system. Fans that noticed it, said it looks clunky and reminded them of Seadogs series. Devs answered that the combat system is still being worked on (duh);
- the project is "halfway done", whatever the hell that supposed to mean;
- at this moment the game is considered to be a VK Play exclusive, i.e. likely won't appear on Steam.

I'll never understand why devs are so fixated on reinventing the wheel. If you're not sure you have the know-how, resources and talent to implement an ambitious combat system just copy soulslike and call it a day. I'd rather have a mediocre copy of that than whatever clunky abomination they come up with (looking at you KCD).

i wouldn't worry about store exclusivity, it's not like they are going to use some kind of elaborate DRM to prevent ppl from pirating it.

The lack of localization, on the other hand.
