Not a big fan of these types of 'remasters'. Either create a complete reimagining with an entirely new codebase, or remaster the game faithfully without adding **** on your own. I do like some of the new models, and it's neat that the guns have reloading animations now, but still. Feels like I'm looking at some kind of mod pack.

Skip that and install RSD's mod for the Newdark port instead.

I liked the (real) Thief games and System Shock.

System Shock 2 is a stupid, STUPID, mess of an idiotic story that should not exist.
The story and game was done at the end of the first game.
You may as well not bother replying to my posts if it's to argue anything except concrete facts or your personal opinion. I still probably won't see it.

Could you elaborate? Almost all I've read is never short of praise for the game, story included.

SHODAN was defeated. It did not download itself anywhere because all the methods it had were destroyed by the hacker in the first game as SHODAN attempted them.
It can't do it secretly. It's too big and it's too obvious as it had to crack multiple alarmed safeguards to even try, which alerted everyone to what SHODAN was attempting.
There could BE no rogue SHODAN in the second game.

Yes, it launched one of the groves it was doing bio experiments in, but it had NO drives and ESPECIALLY, no FTL drive. There is no way it could have left Jupiter orbit, much less travelled to Tau Ceti in a couple of years.

Then the TWO experimental FTL starships travelling together for what reason? Why?

There's more. So much more. It's all so ********.

How much of this was Ken Levine?

In any case, if they ever make System Shock 3, they'll be damned if they bring back Shodan, because that would debase her as a villain; if they don't, why call it System Shock?

I'm unable to run the OG System Shock 2 on my Troonix PC, everytime I try it crashes after the intro. I was hoping this remaster would provide a smoother experience, and it did...until I found myself unable to load either the autosave or my manual save. Uninstalled it right then and there.

The original story wasn't System Shock at all, then it got rewritten in a lot of areas and adapted.

That would explain a great deal if it's a Frankenstein's monster of a plot and game world.

Aside from my problems with the idiotic plot/setting, I thought the game itself wasn't very engaging.
I finished it and remember most of it, but except for one thing, it's all pretty "meh".
(And that one thing, while well done, is itself a problem with the plot.)

:broken: Once you play System Shock 2, you'll realize the improvements and tweaks that Prey 2017 or Neuroshock made to the System Shock series. That being said, Prey still falls a little lame.

Anyone have any idea how they remastered the cutscenes? @Roguey? Did they have the source material?

Guess they could have recreated it.

Basing it purely on the in-game footage, it doesn't look like it even needed a remaster.

It didn't, but normies can't abide so few polygons and Stephen Kick is their best friend who's only out to save ancient gaming from the dustbin of history. Also, Trump should have died in the assassination attempt and so should have all his supporters. According to Kick.

It is worth playing, don't know about the remaster. I like the first one the most though but the sequel has some good ideas.

Don't the system shock games already have sourceports to begin with? Or am I misremembering?

The first game was reverse engineered as I recall and the Newdark port came about when someone discovered a copy of the Dreamcast build of SS2 with the source code in a storage bin.

Is this the gaming equivalent of the good old Mafia "it fell off the back of a truck" saying, only involving shady, mysterious Frenchmen, who may or may not have been involved with the development of the game?

It isn't really a spooky serious game, as you'll find this out once you encounter those magic monkes and robot maids. And the ending is a pure comedy gold:

Remember what I said about this game being ********...
(The backstory is that Shodan has done something to the FTL drives to allow her to make her cyberspace "real" space, and so you can kill her at the end by entering the "dimension" physically and taking out her defenses and then shooting her avatar with a gun...)
