Doom 3 still has a few community projects in circulation. I still recommend Perfected Doom as the best way to replay it. I think Skin Deep used the engine.

Doom 3 Phobos.jpg
If you're interested in more Doom 3 style gameplay GOG just added DOOM 3: Phobos.
(I haven't run it myself yet so I can't offer any insights as to the quality of the mod.)

Looks like the developers have planned for the mod to span four episodes and currently have three of them finished, so it may end on a cliff hanger.

They always go radio silent, sometimes for years, between episodes, so the project appearing dead is nothing new.

The game straddles this awkward middle ground where it's trying to be a scary survival horror experience, but also make you feel like a badass marine, and it never really manages to do either particularly well.

In practice this means the game is more concerned with scaring you than it is in putting you in interesting combat situations.

The encounter design is just bad, monster closet after monster closet, demons teleporting behind you which such frequency it start being routine, and with the low enemy count there's rarely an interesting enemy group composition to challenge you.

The various logs and computers you can interact with are a neat addition, and sometimes you can use the information in them to access additional weapons, but since the game just throws ammo your way, that's really not much of a boon.

My main gripe, though, are the weapons. They're just so undercooked - they feel and sound underpowered, many actually are underpowered, and the shotgun is just ********. Even Quake 2 had a better shotgun.

Yes, though you really can't tell at a glance.

Doom 3 has the worst shotgun ever designed in a FPS, but the double barrel in the expansion was good.

Nah Doom 3 is pretty below average. The game is 'too' **** dark to the point of being frustrating more than "spooky", and the gunplay isn't very good. It also has one of the worst shotguns in gaming. It was a nice attempt, maybe a direct sequel would've been a lot better, but as it stands Doom 3 is forgettable and just not very fun.

Doom 3 isn't a game. It is a tech demo. That said it came out at an awkward time. Lighting is awful. Hard shadows. Characters that look like clay.

Gameplay in the 2016 and 2020 titles was better. There was craft and thought put into the flow of those games. It would be generous to say there was a gameplay designer on Doom 3.

There's no craft in 2016, it's a ripoff of Brutal Doom and the pacing is nothing but corridors with arenas.

It's not as good as Quake 4.

I know people equate=fast-paced gunplay with Doom but the slower, more atmospheric pace lent itself to develop the series further from the classic arena-shooter roots. The horror elements, the atmosphere, and even the heavy, chunky feel of combat still feels unique to the franchise. 2016/Eternal felt like what someone who only watched Doom 1/2 gameplay videos would create to keep ADHD normies entertained (haven't bothered with Dark Ages). Maybe id Software should have really gone for an original, separate IP for what ended up becoming Doom 3.

This era of FPS where they simulate you carrying around 80lbs of troop gear so you can't ******* move among other downgrades truly enhanced the experience. Go play Doom 2 Ashes 2063 or something infinitely more worth your time.
