Character Creators in Games: Discussion | Screenshots

Post by Vergil »

What are some of your favorite character creators in games? Do you prefer when a game has lots of in depth sliders you can adjust or just a series of preset body parts to choose from? What about systems like Fallout 4 where you pinch and pull at facial features? Any created characters you're particular proud of?

I've been playing Dragon Age Inquisition lately (I know) and I'm quite pleased with how this character turned out. I followed a guide someone else made and then made some alterations here and there to suite my tastes. Like any "good" Bioslop game I spend most of my time hovering over the screenshot button during dialog :bounce:

Fallout is pretty good.

I take issue with the % next to the skills, it is not clear what that means.

But I suspect this is not what you meant.

I wasn't a big fan of the Inquisition CC, the characters just looked off to me. On one side I dislike preset faces because you can't change them but on the other hand I dislike the pinch the features to your liking.
I like how Monster Hunter Wilds did it recently. You can either do it completely by your self by tweaking sliders or you just go to the list and edit it like that.

How do you actually see what it is doing when you change a number?

I am not a fan of character generation with sliders and all since most of the time it looks like *** anyways. I can live with presets, if they are decent.

The screen is more for copying from someone else or doing some stuff where looking isn't really required

Presets are never good because devs are libtards, and the anal-expulsive "poke at the clay model till it gives you happy feelings" method is ********. I like changing numbers.

Sliders are obviously strictly better, since you can still offer preset variants with those.

Preset body parts inevitably end up in you meeting a random NPC who is your twin at some point in the game. That said, if it's a mainly isometric game and it doesn't go into close-up camera mode all the time, presets are perfectly acceptable to save on development resources.

As for the best/most powerful CC I've ever used, probably Cyberpunk's.

I love when this happens. Can remember one in NWN2 and one in DAO.

I like Sliders.

Kenshi, and Mount and Blade have decent enough offerings, though the graphics are dated in both cases.

The biggest issue in most games is hair, 90% of the time it's some anime weebslop, and not an actual simple haircut.

I wish games had more sliders for body shape other than shoulder width and height.

Every photorealistic character creator I have tried - Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, EVE Online after the model revamp, Black Desert, Star Citizen, Monster Hunter Wilds, etc - has been disappointing to me. I spend many hours fiddling with the system but ultimately can't actually make the attractive looking character I want, and either end up settling for a character I don't like, or having to consult some online preset and use that. Another problem with these super indepth photorealistic face character creators is that they are usually paired with strictly mundane, realistic character proportions.

Image

I think I prefer presets like in stylized games. You get a wider variety in proportions that actually look good. The artists make the preset faces and hairs look good, and it is easier and far faster to flip through the presets and to try to assemble something that looks good.

I can understand as these games don't let you make the visually identical anime girls you post in the attractive female thread. :pipe-thinking:

The first Dragon's Dogma creator was one of the most detailed ones I've seen so far, even more so how the physical size of your avatar actually affects your in-game strength and melee attacks.

Making a not ugly male character is impossible in that game though.

You got a point. Even pretty boy Griffith was kinda ugly and mind you these are recreations of Guts and Griffith by the devs.

For looks, I want to select from heads or portraits, or whatever pregenerated features can be swapped. I don't like body morphs. I want a good menu for everything else. A good chargen interface should be thematic, analogous to a manual.

The more it looks like excel spreadsheet with tables and number values the more I like it.
All this new fancy stuff with pinch and pull at facial features mechanics reminds me of this:

The lack of light reflection on the eyes makes him look dead.

This looks like a 37-year-old lesbian who sells overpriced herbal teas in her alternative medicine bookshop.

The henna tattoos are for hiding the black eyes she gets from her butch gf.

It's more about that "hit me" facial expression.

Also, Vergil made two different characters that look exactly the same.
