Drova Dediversified 1.2.2.1 — Drova - Forsaken Kin

Post by Dunadan »

Image

Introduction

Drova: Forsaken Kin is a game that self-identifies as "an Action-RPG that marries the dark grim tones of its genre with the mysticism of Celtic mythology".

And yet, the game is full of people of ethnic descent that were nowhere near Celtic Europe at the time the Celts were the dominant culture in their homelands.

This mod rectifies the obvious by making everyone in the game look like ethnic Celts.

Overview

This mod is relatively small and simple in its execution:
  1. Skin tones: The skin tones of all characters, including the player character choices upon character creation, have been altered to varying degrees of Caucasian.
  2. NPC Portraits: All NPC conversation portraits have been altered to have Caucasian skin tones.
  3. Character Creation Body Type: The character creation menu gives 2 options for body type, labelled 'Physique' by default, that is clearly meant to be the differentiation between male and female because all it does is add a breast-band to the character sprite. The label 'Physique' has been changed to 'Sex' as a result.
  4. NPC Name Changes: A lot of NPCs have names that have origins far outside Celtic Europe. These names have been changed to names of more Celtic/European origins.
MOD USERS:
As you play through, please make notes of any other instances you consider 'diverse' or 'woke' and let me know... I'll see if I can fix them.

Installation

I don't think it's strictly necessary, but it's always suggested to start a new game.

NOTE: This mod currently has no language localization. It is for the English version only.

Simply extract the ZIP to your Drova install folder, but take care to create backups of the original files as the files in the ZIP will overwrite the default game files otherwise.

Uninstallation

To uninstall the mod, simply delete the files extracted from the mod and replace them with your backups. Or, if you didn't keep backups, verify game files through Steam and it will redownload the required files.

One could certainly try, I'm just not sure if it would have any downstream consequences.

Also, it would be a bit larger of an undertaking changing names of characters throughout the game. There are a lot of names that aren't Celtic in origin.

if I had the files regarding text and dialogue, I'd do it lol. (still have to find motivation for the german translation of the Pathfinder mod tho)

I'll take a stab at it. It's a good addition to the mod. I never really thought about it until you brought it up, and then when I looked into it a bit it turns out there are lots of names with origins outside of Celtic Europe. If I can figure out an efficient way (i.e. using scripts) to edit the dialogue files en masse, I'll change every name in the game to one that's Celtic/Germanic.

Also, I wouldn't fret over Pathfinder. I stopped working on it because they keep releasing patches. Now that the GOTY is out I'm just waiting for whatever hotfixes and whatnot to come out before I go back to it... I don't want to work on it any more until it's done being patched.

I just find it very weird that the devs made a game with Celtic (iirc) culture and influences and puts in roaches and other **** like ******* in it. Gothic is fine regarding the "diverse" cast cause everyone is a convicted criminal.

Yeah, it'll take a while till they are done patching. I'll be ready for when the mod gets continued.

You can use Notepad++ to do a mass find and replace across all files of a certain type in a directory, assuming they're in a format readable to it.

afaik there's none, you can technically create a ****** character (something likes male body type + female voice) but that's it. Though I don't think any amount of work can fix the bad overworld map design and the absolutely horrible writing.

Done.

I had a look at the files and found a number of names of questionable descent (Turkish, Persian, etc). It took a while to make the changes because there were a lot of files to edit and I couldn't just do a blanket "Find/Replace" because that would have broken a bunch of ****... NPC names still have to be their original names within the code for a lot of reasons, so it's just the 'display' and dialog names that got changed.

Here's a list:

Afrin → Ansgar
Bardok → Bardon
Carima → Corliss
Caspara → Caitir
Cengiz → Conchobar
Ebru → Eghan
Emko → Emrys
Emre → Enan
Ester → Eolande
Farina → Fennella
Ismar → Inness
Junali → Giorsail
Karmi → Kelvyn
Kessia → Kiora
Minira → Mabina
Monko → Maol
Ruhan → Reghan
Tuz → Trevet
Zoltan → Ultan

If you find any others you think are offenders, let me know.

Incredible game. Skin tones didn't really bother me but the dev had to go there and de-gender character creation. Anyway, glad this mod is available now. Will give it a spin.

I'm about halfway through and aside from the issues addressed by this mod there is no alphabet content shoved down your throat.

Hi @Dunadan ,

Correct me if I am wrong but after the December game update, this mod is no longer working, right? I still have Jalina black and installing this mod is so straighforward that I do not think I am doing anything wrong. This affect multiple NPCs, skin and avatar. For what I can tell, the "Character Creation Body Type" and "NPC names" (Cengiz → Conchobar) still work.

I just checked, and tried the differenct colors on "New Game". It seems like Colors 1-3 still work as intended only Number 4 is back to being black.
Name-Changes work fine.

Btw. @Dunadan I just created the complete german localization for the name changes. With the only difference that I changed the name Emrys to Erys. I could upload it or you could add it to the mod, if you are interested.

Hey there, sorry for not looking into this sooner but I've been busy and I finished playing Drova quite a while ago. I noticed today another update of the game released (v1.2.2) so I had a quick look and the files where the textures for skin tones have indeed changed as a result of the patch so my edits will no longer work for those (although, as previously mentioned, the name changes and portrait changes should still be working correctly).

I'll fix this later this week and update a new version so that the skin tones changes are back and compatible with the latest version of the game.

@Darkaxt @Ramgis

I've updated the mod so it should now work with the latest version of the game: v1.2.2 (13 January 2025). Let me know if you notice any other problems.

PSA: the game released an update 1.2.2.1 today (14 Jan 2025). For my system, the update process prompted a filesystem validation for the game, which meant I had to reinstall the mod after the update. As far as I can tell, the 1.2.2 mod update still works as intended for 1.2.2.1, so no revisions to the mod are required.

Thanks for updating

Some other DEI-Crap I also found, although very subtle, is the achievement title "Last One Standing" instead of "Last Man Standing".

Now look at this:
last-one-standing.png
The Variable has the correct term but the displayed one is "diversified". :groan:

It's not a big deal in my opinion but it's another clear indicator that there might be some discrepancy between what the devs actually would have created if they weren't massive ***** and what they were "forced" to do with the game in the end. Spineless behvaiour nontheless.

With Drova I feel the DEI stuff isn't very much in your face, its just like a ****-coloured filter on top of a pretty solid game which is, thanks to your mod, even more enjoyable now. So thanks to you again Dunadan.

Patch 1.2.3 released today. I did a quick test and re-installed the mod after the patch and from what I can tell, the mod still works with 1.2.3, so no updates will be made unless someone points out a specific issue for this version of the game.

For myself I'd say yes, definitely worth a playthrough. I enjoyed the game more than a lot of others that have come out in recent years. In fact, it's one of the only games I've played from the beginning right to the finish without taking a long break or two between start and finish. I played the entire game in a single stretch of a month or so.

Classic one :D

I've played it 4 times so far, 5th Playthrough incoming. It took me 1week per playthrough (got a lot of free time though).
The devs will also launch a new content patch in a few months which will probably make the game even better.

If it's just a standard GoG installer copy, it's identical to one downloaded from their site.
You may as well not bother replying to my posts if it's to argue anything except concrete facts or your personal opinion. I still probably won't see it.
Reject your retarded-wing political programming and learn to think.
If you can.
