It is the 12th century, and the Muslim world has been split into two warring factions. Meanwhile, Muhammad's disciples are also threatened external forces – in the west the Crusaders; in the east the Mongols. As the Persian assassin Sadler, you are given the task of murdering the Caliph, hopefully saving the future of the Islamic faith in the process, a process which will have implications ranging as far as 800 years into the future. First, however, you must find your three assassin friends and complete a range of quests, for this is an RPG.
Guessing this one didn't make it past the censors

For some reason I find this line hysterical. Also, I had to make an account so I could submit a correction for the title. It's incorrectly transliterated: Gōzō should be Gūzō.

It's part of the Exile series (not that one). It usually ends with you going forward in time and killing someone important like the president. The second game got a butchered translation on the Genesis by Working Designs.

Is this a general thread for strange video games? One of my favorite "strange" games that's coming to mind now is Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden (for the uninitiated, it's a funny parody of JRPGs and 2000s internet weeb culture, with decent and fun JRPG gameplay, and it's also free).

Back during that magical time in the 80s when any book series had a chance of being made into a text game. I, Daminao: The Wizard of Partrestrada is based on a fantasy novel by R.A. MacAvoy in which you take on the role of the titular Daminao, a witch in a fantasy version of the Italian Renaissance. Daminao takes music lessons from the Archangel Raphael and all of the actions and story are narrated by Daminao's talking dog.

The game opens with you sitting in the palm of Satan's hand and the game can end before it even begins as he tries to trick you multiple times. The game keeps track of how good or evil you are and being a witch you have access to magic. All magic comes from the devil so the use of any magic is an evil act, but is often necessary to move forward. So you need to try to use magic for good purposes and generally be a good person, if you go too far evil Satan shows up to claim your soul. There's also some ******** RNG where you can lose just because the game decided not to let you leave a maze and there's a magical battle against some old lady (and then you have sex with her). You also have to HAIL SATAN to win the game at one point.

Aside from the RNG part, the game is really short, but stupidly difficult because good luck trying to figure out how to proceed in most cases without a guide.

EDIT: The game also makes fun of you when you try to do things when you're already dead

Another book adaptation, this time based on the Green Sky novels by Zilpha Keatley Snyder. Only this game isn't a text game, but rather a combination adventure and action platformer. A large populace live in huge trees (Erdlings) and everyone else lives on or underground (Kindar), this is making people unhappy. Unfortunately, the one person who can bring peace has gone missing and now you get to find him. Take your pick of five different characters of difference ages and backgrounds and then try not to fall off of stuff as you wander about talking to people.

You get a set of adventure game style verbs but you also need to keep track of money, hunger, sleep, and overall health. Losing all your health means being taken back to your home. As you explore you'll increase your spirit which starts to give you special powers like pense which lets you sense emotions from people and animals which gives you more clues. Later on you'll gain the ability to make trees grow branches which will let you access difficult to reach spots and finally the power of teleportation.

You mostly get around by leaping off of platforms and gliding around on a fancy parachute all a shuba which can randomly tear when you take damage so bring a spare. You'll also need tools to cut weeds, food to keep from passing out, and wits because not everyone is your friend and you can even get kidnapped by political enemies. I've never read the books, but this game takes place after them and it's considered canon to the universe.

Tomak: Save the Earth
The gods have decided that Earth is doomed - true love, they feel, no longer exists and the gods won't tolerate a world without true love. The only dissenter is Evian, the goddess of love, who insists that humanity still has hope. The rest of the gods relent, giving her three years to prove that humanity really is capable of love. If she and a human can fall in love in that timespan, Earth will be spared. The only catch - they refuse to send her entire body down. Evian will have to travel down as just a head, resting in a flowerpot, and manage to find a human who can fall in love with her like that.

just about any game made by Vasily Zotov - a Russian outsider artist that lives in the US. *all* of his games are only fully comprehensible from his perspective - but they are a direct window into his soul and the numerous struggles he's had

i'll let this trailer for his most known game speak for itself:

Drowned God: Conspiracy of the Ages

Drowned God's concept centers around the idea that human history has been manipulated to cover up certain facts.[4] The true history, according to the game, is that aliens from the Orion area of space seeded humanity on Earth thousands of years ago and have since guided its development.[5] An ancient, highly developed civilization was lost millennia ago in the Great Flood. The library of Alexandria housed much of what game writer Harry Horse called "forbidden knowledge" before it was destroyed; the Knights Templar, whose membership included luminaries such as Leonardo da Vinci and Isaac Newton, preserved the information for centuries. In the 20th century, the Philadelphia Experiment opened a gateway into another dimension, first freeing the aliens Horse refers to as "the Legion", and an independent government group spent the subsequent decades in contact with the aliens following the Roswell incident.[4]

The guy who made it ended up murdering some family. But you can buy it on Steam!

To be clear, that wasn't a joke. He killed a family.

[edit]
Went and looked it up, it was a murder-suicide. So, I was close.

Drowned God: Conspiracy of the Ages
Heard about it, quite a mish-mash of conspiracy theories. Game's author also wrote some children books before. He had a terminally ill wife so perhaps it drove him to this murder-suicide.

There's another strange game that I remembered: Bad day on the Midway. Googled it and it's even freely available: https://www.wegneronline.com/badday/package.html
It's a surrealistic theater of the absurd point-and-click adventure with ties to The Residents music band.
