Deadfire: yeah or nah?
Deadfire: yeah or nah?
My standards are it has to be an rpg with enough interesting things to do, as well as the freedom to let you do so. That means as little red tape, formalities, railroading, or the game interpreting itself for you. It just lets you unleash every venal instinct and do as you please. I'm fine with just passable combat, so long as it plays into the aforementioned interesting things to do. I don't care about the story at all. It would be nice if I don't have to 1111111111 my way through every convo, but considering the point about freedom, it'd be ideal if I could.

If you can completely ignore the characters/story, then you can probably stomach deadfire. Still voting no, tho.

I was intrigued by the unusual island/pacific setting and getting a boat like in Suikoden 4. I played for 5 minutes and was in the blue dead/ghost realm and was told to sit down. Lost interest, alt+f4ed and uninstalled. Might give it a go another time.

I liked deadfire, it was a improvement over the first games gameplay and the most reasonable story option was to side with the colonizers.

I tried to like this game as I find the setting quite good and interesting. Plus the art direction is also great. I have however after combined over a hundred hours of playtime still not actually finished a playthrough. The horrible writing with it's braindead plot and cringe reddit companions save a few exceptions just make it unplayable, or rather unfinishable
Also, the game runs like crap.

It’s going to sell like gang busters just you wait.
It is one of the few RPGs that I've yet to finish, because it is just that boring.
I would say no.

I answered exactly what you asked tho. If you're capable of ignoring the awful story/companions, then you'd probably like it.Vlajdimir Ermenović wrote: ↑ September 8th, 2024, 06:52Seems like Val the Mafia Boss is the only one who read the OP.

my favorite part of deadfire was the big god in a statue rampaging around going "rawrrr!" and you can just ignore it to go sailing around to islands for no reason, really kept me immersed in the story

I questioned you further, perhaps I should've been more specific. When I said "freedom", I was not referring to only the story and characters. I was also referring to intrusive dialogue, tutorials, unskippable cutscenes, stat screens you didn't ask for, overdrawn UI animations, etc.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ September 8th, 2024, 06:54I answered exactly what you asked tho. To give you an example, if you entered a new town and got jumped by a wall of text it takes 70 clicks to free yourself from, that's not freedom. If, on the other hand, dialogue can only be triggered by you yourself clicking on an npc, that's freedom.
If a store lets you finish your business in 3 clicks, that's freedom. If you have to sit through inane stat comparisons you didn't ask for and can only buy and sell one item at a time, that's not freedom. Underrail is a game with a good trading system that doesn't impede on your freedom.
If the game, at the beginning, pauses mid-combat to tell you some ******** you can discern for yourself, that's not freedom.
An open world game without freedom is Yakuza: you can "go exploring" and "ignore the main path", but everything you do is sectioned off, the controls change all the time, and whenever you go off and do something you have to sit through an hour of Kazuma taking off his shoes and making small talk with clerks. An open world game with freedom is Crackdown: the controls remain the same throughout, there is no clear border between travelling, fighting, racing, or platforming, and if you get bored of what you're currently doing, you can leave without even transition screens getting in the way.
A shooter with freedom is DUSK. A shooter without freedom is Prodeus.
It goes without saying that you should be able to quicksave when and whereever you feel like. The game should also never, ever ask you to make an account, log in, or download an app.
Your statue god anecdote is based.

Download it and try it if it looks appealing. Nothing else to say. I beat it 3 times and I still don't really like it, I just had nothing better to do.

I loved the first Pillars but didn’t enjoy the pirate adventure theme that they decided on in the sequel. Expected something a bit more grim dark/eldritch gods to be honest. Especially with how the first game ended and how good White March was.
Didn’t manage to finish it, but I’ll surely comeback to Deadfire at some point. The combat felt better than the original and I’m sure the end game is compelling at least combat wise. I have serious doubts if the writing in it is ever good, but who knows. Maybe I need to be more open minded. Or just not talk to any of the companions. Probably the latter.

The pirate adventure **** is what got me interested in the game, I'm just here to see if the game follows through on it. If it plays the way it looks or is it just set dressing.Axel_am wrote: ↑ September 8th, 2024, 10:51I loved the first Pillars but didn’t enjoy the pirate adventure theme that they decided on in the sequel. I have yet to see a more modern pirate theme game that doesn’t bottle it. I swear pirates are a sure indicator that the game will be a bust in some regard.

The pirate area is arguably the highlight of the game itself. The problem is, it's not a pirate game. It's a bait and switch, most of the 'pirate' theme is in fact actually just "RESPECT BROWN PEOPLE CULTURES!!!" — Soyer himself saying as much.Vlajdimir Ermenović wrote: ↑ September 8th, 2024, 11:03The pirate adventure **** is what got me interested in the game, I'm just here to see if the game follows through on it.
