Diablo clones that don't suxxorz

Post by Vlajdimir Ermenović »

I've been playing Grim Dawn and I'm currently fifty-fifty as to whether I want to keep playing, on one hand it's one of the better diablo-style games I've played so far and shows many aspects where it's a proper evolution of Diablo 2, on the other it also falters in some aspects where D2 didn't (I'd say core aspects, but with a game as simple as that, every aspect is core). Still, though, there was never a point at which I asked myself ''why am I not playing Diablo instead?''. Are there any other games like that, that build on the Diablo formula substantially and not in boring ways like adding romance or base building?

Note: non-isometric diablo clones count too, like Kingdoms of Amalur (not as good as it should've been) and Remnant (haven't played yet so idk).

Divine Divinity is the true sequel to Diablo 1.

I think I got my fill of Diablo like games when I finished the first one. I couldn't get into Diablo II, felt like more of the same (even though it had some interesting improvements) and there is only so much of that type of play I can stomach.

Divine Divinity was a nice change. Had the Diablo combat feel, but added a lot more RPG elements to the game which broke up the repetition of Diablo's play. Beyond Divinity sucked with all the randomizing dungeon crap.

Divine Divinity, Diablo 1, and Diablo 2 are all excellent.

Path of Exile, Grim Dawn, Titan Quest, Chronicon, Nox, and Sacred are OKish but flawed.

The rest are forgettable.

Path of exile? The online-only game? Good?

Path of Exile is Diablo 2 with all the worst elements cranked to 11.

I'm fond of Torchlight 2, personally. I find a lot of these Diablo-likes/successors were released many years ago, and are prone to having issues on modern OS's. Torchlight 2 on the other hand is one that plays well, and 'scales' well out of the box.

Path of Exile is such ******* autistic slop. I played it for one hour and wondered why in the **** it's so popular.

Most Diablo clones are trash and have the same loot/grind mechanism. No real rpg-ing going on. No real reason to play the ****** in the first place. Sad!

After experimenting with many of these titles after playing Grim Dawn for a while, I feel that Diablo 1 is the best by virtue of being a much smaller and more focused experience. Despite it's brutal and constant satanic imagery, it is at the very least impossible to grind for hundreds of hours in that game, so therefore it cannot waste your time as much as later games tend to do. Every encounter has weight behind it, there aren't dozens of trash mobs around every corner that are wiped out in seconds. There aren't even any skill trees, you either find better weapons by exploring or spellbooks to improve your abilities. It leads me to wonder why Diablo 2 made such a massive departure. How would the genre have turned out if Diablo 1 got a more direct sequel?. We may never know.

Hades is Diablo-adjacent. Might scratch the itch you have.

If you actually meant Diablo in terms of slow progress through a grime filled dungeon then maybe give Nox, Darkstone, or Restricted Area a try.
