It's the only one I've played, but I really enjoyed Geneforge: Mutagen, the remake of Geneforge 1:

There was a lot to explore and I felt like I had a lot of choice in how to proceed and handle situations.

I have trouble getting into them, but the developer has a very dedicated fanbase that really like them.

Alright then, I'll try Geneforge 1. Looking on their website these games kinda seem a bit bland but they also have a certain charm, especially Nethergate.

It's good if you like being a D2 necromancer

@Kalarion has some strong opinions about which others are good, IIRC.

1 and 2 are the best. 3 is when Vogel decided he wanted to be a big shot novelist and write an overarching plot. 3 has really cumbersome inventory management and is weaker in general than the other two because of the focus on the story. I can't even remember what happened in 4 except that it's a set up to 5, which should tell you a lot, and 5 would be good if the enemies weren't hit sponge nightmares.

The only one I managed to get very far in is the remake of the remake of Exile(Avernum: Escape From the Pit. And yes, he remade it twice.)
I just stuck with it for a while despite not liking it and it eventually 'clicked', very good exploration and progression.

It's always been Vogel's strong suit and it's why Geneforge 1 and 2 are so good. The Avernum remakes are alright, though it's still not my favorite series.

The Exiles, particularly Exile 3, are fantastic. The Geneforges are good and cool and unique. Nethergate is excellent.

The first round of Exile remakes, and the continuation of the trilogy (Avernum 1-6) range from pretty good (Avernum 2 and 3) to mediocre (the rest). Esteemed Codex reviewer VaultDweller's review said 5 was great, I disagree. It was fun but nothing to to write home about. 4 and 6 were just serviceable slop.

I never bothered with Avadon or Queen's Wish, by that point Vogel had gone so far into chasing big-market trends that I wasn't interested in his games anymore. Based on what people I respect had to say about them I would say I've been vindicated.

@Kalarion is 100% spot on. The only thing I'd add is that both the Avadon series and especially Queen's Wish are the worst of his games. Don't bother with them unless you've gone through the rest of his catalog and really want more.

Many thanks guys. So I'm going to check out the original Geneforges and the first 3 entries in the Exile series, plus Nethergate.
