► Getting Started
► How do I play?
You need a copy of Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction, that's original Diablo 2. Once you have those installed, go to the MXL website and download the mod. Run the launcher and hopefully everything will just werk. Get into the game and make an account on MXL's fake Battle.Net and make a ladder character. Check the player guide on the website for basic information on each class.

► What do I play?
All classes been redone in MXL. Check the Tiered guide for more information on the various ways each class can be played. Odds are there's a way to do what you want. Tiered List: https://forum.median-xl.com/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=78735
Don't worry if you screw up your character. You get free respects to level 50, three respects from Akara (one per difficulty), and later on you can begin finding Belladonna Extracts in hell difficulty that let you respec whenever you want. Some guides will even have you respec later to fit into your final role.

► Tips for noobs
Don't horde gear to sell, it's not worth anything. Monsters drop all the gold you need which magically flies into your wallet when you get close to it.
You start with a Horadric Cube, you'll need it for crafting and extra storage space. If someone tells you to "cube" something they mean transmute it in the cube.
Item Colors:
White - Normal
Grey - Socketed Normal (for runewords)
Blue - Magical
Yellow - Rare
Gold - Unique
Green - Set
Dark Green - Honorific
Orange - Shrine item or Crafted Gem
Socketables
Most gear comes with sockets. Sockets accept runes, gems, skulls, and jewels. Every socketable tells you what benefits it provides, but be careful, some socketables will raise the level requirement of your gear. If you want to get your socketables back later you can cube the item with an oil of disjunction which you can buy off certain npcs in every act.
More tips
The first 100 levels of Median XL moves very fast. Do not worry about being outleveled or having crap gear. Your early gear will change very often. The only thing you really need to worry about is keeping your resists up.
Hold CTRL to sprint, use it to run away from bad things when you are dying.
Hold down SHIFT to attack without moving.
Hold down ALT to see all the items laying on the ground in the area.
Remember to bind your skills to hotkeys and bind your buffs to the quick casts slots. Quick cast lets you use a skill without having to change to it. Look at your keybinds for more information.
Don't forget to hire a merc and dress them up. For more info on mercs and what they do check here: https://docs.median-xl.com/doc/class/hirelings
You can put sockets into most gear by cubing them with jewels. Some gear has less sockets than the actual size of the item, you don't get any wasted jewels back for cubing so always use jewels you don't want when punching holes in your gear.
Download and set up DS2Stats. It's a program that reads your game as you play and lets you know when valuable items drop. It runs out of the box, but can also be edited. Grab that here: https://www.median-xl.com/tools.php (second link)

► TUs, ACs, and SUs.
► Tiered Uniques
Tiered Uniques (TUs) are unique, upgradable gear with a level system (1-4). All TUs: https://docs.median-xl.com/doc/items/tiereduniques
They can be upgraded with Arcane Crystals.
NOTE: Each level increases the requirements, do not upgrade yourself out of your gear.

NOTE: Each level increases the requirements, do not upgrade yourself out of your gear.
► Arcane Crystals and Shards
Arcane Crystals (AC): You get these from cubing Arcane Shards and sometimes as loot/rewards. Combine a crystal with a Tiered Unique in your cube to raise it one level. Combine a normal tiered item with two crystals and an oil of enhancement (crafting item bought from NPC, covered in crafting section) to make a new TU. Be careful about upgrading yourself out of your own gear. Arcane Crystals are also used later on for other recipes so keep them handy.
Arcane Shards (AS): Drop as loot later on, but early in the game you'll get them from disenchanting Tiered Uniques you no longer need. Cube the TU with your the Catalyst of Disenchantment. The catalyst drops from Andariel on normal difficulty. Cube 5 shards to make 1 Arcane Crystal.

► Sacred Uniques
Sacred Uniques (SUs) are the ultimate items of the game and come in two flavors. SU=Normal Sacred, drop from most places in hell difficulty. SSU=Rare Sacred that only drops from certain zones.
► MOs and Honorifics
► Mystical Orbs
Mystic Orbs (MOs) can be used to augment any gear with additional bonuses at the cost of raising the level requirement. The formula is 4 levels per orb and with maximum of five orbs of the same type per item. So you can boost a pair of boots with strength five times and increase the level requirement by 20 and then boost it another five times with dexterity and raise the total requirement by 40, but you can't boost either of those bonuses six times.
Most MOs can be bought by NPCs:
Act 1: Gheed
Act 2: Drognan
Act 3: Alkor
Act 4: Jamella
Act 5: Larzuk
Most orbs are exclusive to the kind of gear they work with, pay attention before you waste your hard earned hold.
Some orbs are unique and only drop in the wild. You'll start seeing these in hell difficulty in the late game.
NOTE: Some stats have hard caps and trying to orb an item beyond that cap does nothing but waste the orb and raise the level cap for nothing. Enhanced Defense caps at 200 and Enhanced Damage caps at 250.

► Honorifics
Honorific items are blank gear that gain twice as many stats from each mystic orb you use. The formula is Magic or Rare weapon/armor + Mark of Infusion → return item as honorific. You can get Marks of Infusion from Shenk the Overseer in Act 5.
► What do I do?
Just kill stuff and level like normal, work your way through normal difficulty and get a feel for it. Your gear will change constantly. If you're following a character guide try to do what it says. Try to keep your resists at 75% when possible.
Once you've reached Act V and killed Nihilithak you can begin farming him. He drops two Tiered Uniques per kill.

The Basics
Oils are crafting reagents for various recipies. Some are sold in town, others can only be found. The town oils are:
Disjunction - Cube with socketed item to recover socketables
Luck - Cube with an item for a one time 20% chance of adding a bonus, right click the oil for a list.
Renewal - Rerolls any item to superior. Note: this removes ALL bonuses and makes it a base item, useful for making runewords and honorifics.
Enhancement - Allows you to create tiered uniques from non sacred items. Requires 2 Arcane Crystals.
Craft - Cube with a single rune/gem/skull/shrine/arcane crystal to make a container. The container stores more of the same item, saving space. Put your containers in your stash and autosort container eligible items from anywhere in the game! You don't have to interact with the stash to put items away.
To get your stuff back take the container and cube it to dispense one item. If you empty the container it turns back into the base item and the oil of craft, you lose nothing.
Non-Vendor Oils:
Oil of Greater Luck: Gives 40% chance of adding a bonus. Found within the Cave, the Hole and the Pit on Hell difficulty.
Oil of Augmentation: Turns magic items into rares. Found within the Stony Tomb, the Halls of the Dead and the Ancient Tunnels on Hell difficulty.
Oil of Intensity: Lets you craft shrine gear or bless items with statistically better rolls. Found within the Arachnid Lair, the Swampy Pit, the Flayer Dungeon and the temples which stand in Kurast on Hell difficulty.
Oil of Conjuration: Oil of Luck for casters, gives chance of boosting a weapon with magical benefits. Found within the portals and the optional caverns in Act 5 on Hell difficulty.
Oil of Lesser Alchemy: Lets you turn set amulets into crafted amulets with various bonuses.

► Shrines
Shrines are crafting reagents that start dropping towards the end of Nightmare. Each shrine provides a different set of benefits which you can check out here: https://docs.median-xl.com/doc/wiki/shrines
Shrine gear can be very powerful, but be prepared to burn through a whole lot of them trying to get your perfect roll. Oil of Intensity can help you out, but it burns an entire shrine and RNG is still in play so keep that in mind before using an oil.
Shrines can also be used to bless shrine crafted gear or honorifics. The formula is: Rare/Crafted/Honorific Sacred item + Shrine + 2x Arcane Crystal → add shrine bonuses + Shrine (-1 charge)
An oil of intensity can be used to attempt to get a better result, the recipe for that is: Rare/Crafted/Honorific Sacred item + Shrine + 2x Arcane Crystal + Oil of Intensty → add shrine bonuses with higher stats
In the late game you'll be able to create the Catalyst of Transference which will let you reroll a shrine to a different type. You can make a Catalyst of Transference by cubing 5 positronic brains from the robots in Fauztville.
