It's a dead genre. Many games today wear its carcass like they do with the RPG genre, but unlike this one, dedicated efforts for the hardcore gamer are becoming extremely rare to behold.

Only game I can think of on the horizon is Gloomwood, which has some Thief esque mechanics but is more combat oriented.

Thief isn't even that difficult to copy on a technical level. Is it really just because zoom zoom's wanna bunny hop everywhere so they can speed run at LGBT gatherings and a game that cares about light levels and foot steps are """too slow"""??

Even Hitman games seem to of gotten dumber in this regard where you can just sprint 180 around NPC's and they don't do ****.

Our modern day stealth game is Modded Skyrim.. shoot me.

No, not to defend it, but Gothic 1 Remake has new cinematics, new models and textures, new controls and movement, and completely new mechanics. Thief is a "remaster" not a remake.

Oh I suppose they did redo the sounds to be higher quality. Even got the original voice actor for Garrett to redo the lines.
