Terraria (RPG Game by Re-Logic)

Post by Emphyrio »

If you haven't played Terraria in a while, you should try it again. They've added a lot of content and QoL stuff since the game released in 2011. The final update was in late 2022.

For variety you can generate a world with a special seed. For example, you can start in the underworld and dig your way up to the surface, or you can play on a map that has a starvation mechanic.

There are a lot of mods and many of them are very impressive looking.

Only player bound stats are health and mana.
Both go up only from finding and consuming items hidden in the depths.
All other "stats" (speed, for example) gained from equipping items with fixed stats dropped from enemies, looted from chests, or crafted.
Combat is real time full action combat.

RPG? No.

I haven't played Terraria in years and years, and it was a pretty good game already back when I did play it.

But as enjoyable as I found it, I would never call it an RPG.

Sadly, as much as I'd love to go back to it, the fact of the matter is that it's mostly fun when played with others, and the people I'd like to play with are far too busy these days to actually invest any meaningful time - or at least as much time as I'd want to.

Terraria is more roguelike than RPG. I only see children and Reddit adults play this in any serious capacity.

It's an RPG
Has stats, has combat, has character advancement, has an overarching main quest + side quests

It might be a relatively simplistic one, but it definitely is one.

Traveller is tabletop, which makes it more of an RPG than 99% of computer games.
And you do create a character. There's randomization built in, but you can also make choices.
After chargen, you can train, "assigning" points.

It is a very strange chargen, though, as it's the only one I know of where your character can have actual (off-screen) adventures (via dice rolls) and even die before even the first gameplay session.

3/4 of those apply to the original Traveller.
Advancement through the gaining of levels is not required, altho is very common. In fact, it's often put in games where it's completely unwarranted.

Levels simply do not apply to the concept of something like Traveller where the characters start as experienced crewmen on a spaceship.

I wish that pregenerated houses were more common. The game slams you with a constant stream of new villagers. I don't want to do the commie block thing. I'd like everyone to have a nice-looking custom house but it's hard to keep up.

With the 1.4 patch they've changed it so that villagers get angry if you make them live too close together and they jack up their prices. Now you're supposed to put a few in each biome.

There doesn't seem to be a mod to blanch the arms dealer, golfer, etc. I might make one, but the way Terraria NPC sprites work, it involves editing dozens of sprites.

case in point:
my character in @Roguey trader is an experienced commissar who starts as a level 1 noob
complete dissonance

I put in like 700 hours back when it came out. I tried again recently and I don't like the control scheme or how slow it is at start.

I just don't find this game appealing at all, I understand why some would though. I'm the type of gamer that prefers structure, rather than total freedom.
