I hate discord
******* tired of developers using discord, a private chat platform not indexed by any search engine & requires an account, for public communications.
That is all.
That is all.

Agreed. I only still have it for updates to Nightfall (Dark Souls mod) and Branching Sickness (standalone Halo mod). The censoring was out of control ages ago and it's only worse today. Seems to be a preferred meeting place for the ultra-degenerates.
Actually when downloading mods I find that in some ways it's more convenient to click a link, launch a program, agree to the terms of service for the server, disable notifications for the server, click the appropriate reaction emoji to enable seeing the channels, find the correct channel that has the mod, and scrolling to the top of said server to finally download the mod. Repeat x2 if I need support after leaving the channel.
If all I had to do was click a link on the website, how would I be exposed to Tik Toks and homosexual femboi grooming subchannels?

An even bigger issue is that all the shared information and data will disappear when Discord eventually goes down. And yes, obviously, that's a risk for anything shared of any platform on the internet, but Discord is far more labyrinthine and walled off than most other platforms.
I genuinely struggle to grasp why anyone would use it as their main social platform.
It's clunky and unwieldly for anything more complicated than what you'd get with an IRC channel, with the only added benefit of being able to have multiple subchannels. And for that meager benefit you get saddled with a horrible interface that makes finding and sharing information extremely laborious.

I tried discord and I just don't get it. Somehow more bizarre interface then twitter.
Hard pass.
Hard pass.
Discord is fine for using a group chat to talk with your bros, but I absolutely hate how everyone is using it as a replacement for forums. Discord even has it's own forums in the app now, but they are complete garbage. Far worse than even phpBB.

On top of all the problems mentioned above, it's sometimes hard to find out that a given Discord server even exists. Sometimes you go digging for something and only after searching around do you find out that, oh, the information/files you want are tucked away on a Discord server to which there is one link buried in a Reddit thread somewhere.
Discord is just another factor in the centralisation of the internet. Keep all the niggercattle in one convenient pen.

Whoever got the great idea to host their API / SaaS behind a discord bot, deserves a slow painful death for starting that trend.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ November 17th, 2023, 13:11******* tired of developers using discord, a private chat platform not indexed by any search engine & requires an account, for public communications.

I love when silicone valley ******* jerk themselves off to create a worse experience than what we had 20 years ago. Technology progressing so we can make life more miserable for everyone.
Every service is doing this. Google / Blizzard / Valve / Microsoft.

I give 0 fucks about what developers are posting on their discord servers.
I want news on their website, where I can access it without making an account.
The only time I verified my phone number was when I was looking for modding advice and joined Larian's server...which at the end of the day I didnt need.
I was just a ****** that didnt make sure to uninstall all mods before testing mine.

i suspect it's because phone numbers are linked to social security numbers.Shillitron wrote: ↑ November 17th, 2023, 17:53

Weirdest cracker you know.
The lack of convenient access to threads is what kills it. They're always squirrelled away somewhere.
Its not worse than when you join some project's irc room and you have to register nick to post or even enter
Yeah, but such a project usually had a github page, or a forum. Something actually made to be readable and usable.Pipeweed wrote: ↑ November 17th, 2023, 21:27Its not worse than when you join some project's irc room and you have to register nick to post or even enter
The main issue is that Discord is being used as a replacement for both of those, instead of being a shittier alternative to IRC.
I'd prefer publically visible forums than discord servers or IRC rooms for mods and video games.
Imagine being so ******** that you can't handle something as simple as registering with nickservPipeweed wrote: ↑ November 17th, 2023, 21:27Its not worse than when you join some project's irc room and you have to register nick to post or even enter

Hm, I was about to say that it's not in Poland...Emphyrio wrote: ↑ November 17th, 2023, 18:26i suspect it's because phone numbers are linked to social security numbers.
...but then I recalled the govt introduced a law waaay back (15 years ago maybe) where to register a phone number with chosen provider, you have to use your social-security-number-equivalent here called PESEL
In theory you cannot have a burner phone number.
In practice you snatch it from a dead person (prefereable not a relative) since oftentimes people forget to close their dead relative's phone accounts
Since we are on the topic of phone numbers, is it true that Americans can just search someone's phone number just like that?
I've only got snippits from anecdotes, former job, and doxxing stories, that should you have someone's real name, finding their phone number gets easy
Unless a lot of people are so dumb to put their phone number on social media for all to see
All personal data, including phone numbers, is subject to GDPR, so finding someone's phone number here - unless they put it out there themselves - it's nearly impossible by normal means.

I live in the US and once forgot my grandmother's address (it's quite the trip from where I live). I looked up her name and phone number, and it listed the address with it. This was years ago, but I'm sure it's still the same. Some want you to pay but if you know the full name it's pretty easy. Forgot to mention we used to have thick phone books that listed everyone in the county, full names and numbers listed together.Slavic Sorcerer wrote: ↑ November 17th, 2023, 22:34Since we are on the topic of phone numbers, is it true that Americans can just search someone's phone number just like that?Emphyrio wrote: ↑ November 17th, 2023, 18:26i suspect it's because phone numbers are linked to social security numbers.

I like you're so optimistic to think we only have one.
But he's right, Discord spies on their users.
