Long story short, your problems with the game is you disagreeing with it, because of your values, not because the game is bad on any level. There is absolutely no point in me trying to argue that your values in life are wrong, because it's pointless and we will never agree. In my years of life I never once had or witnessed an argument on the internet that resulted in someone changing their mind.

What you're going to have to understand at some point if you want to continue posting on the internet (and especially on this board) without flaming out hard, is that values and messaging are integrally tied up with gameplay for a lot of posters. They're part of the same whole. I should know, I'm one of them. I haven't touched Baldur's Gate 3 for instance, despite the extensive modding work done on it here on this very site.

Now surely younger gaymers don't care as much about the former as the latter, they're willing to tolerate more on one side than the other. I was too! But as you grow older, your tolerance for the former gets more and more tight, and better and better gameplay is required to overcome it.

Renoir is absolutely in the right here. But don't take our opinion, the writers believe so, that's why the ending were Maelle stays in the canvas is framed as the bad ending. That's the thing here. You are the one disagreeing with the way the story is presented. And, truth be told, I am happy you found enjoyment in the game but that doesn't mean the writing is good because it is not. Its garbage. And the game did exactly the same thing as Spec Ops tried. The game forces you to defeat the HERO of the story, which is Renoir, and then for some reason does the 180 and allows a lip service decision to still do the right thing by siding with Verso. But, all along you (the Player) where doing the wrong thing. And if you commit to going against what Renoir and later Verso wanted, then you get "rewarded" with the bad ending. Maelle and Verso's look in the end clearly is the finger pointing to the player "you are EVIL chud because you let the addict keep tripping on heroin and avoid facing reality and moving on!"

If that wasn't the case, then Maelle's ending would be neutral or even happy, with her enjoying her imaginary life in her imaginary la la land. That's not what happens, the entire opposite happens. The game reminds the Player they made the wrong choice, further cementing that Renoir was always in the right.

Verso ending, the GOOD ending according to the writers:


Just the music alone tells you how you should feel about it. Verso's ending is bittersweet. Sure, he died but at least his family will have a chance to move on. "I am tired" Verso said before finally being able to rest. The music is solemn and bittersweet. The family hugs together. They will suffer this loss, but they do so together.


Maelle ending, the BAD ending according to the writers:


Now, let's look at Maelle's ending. It starts as happy, the upbeat music shows everyone in the theater. But then Verso comes in, and as soon as he takes the stage the happy music stops. He struggles to play the piano, you can hear him trying to resist but it is futile. He is forced by Maelle to be a puppet that plays for her entertainment. Maelle shows the ink in her face, signaling how she will start to lose herself in the canvas just like her mother did. The music takes a very somber and dark tone and we cut to black.

@Kalarion Last time I played Legend of Dragoon was approximately two decades ago; I remember bouncing because it was not a FF7/8 equal, with no overworld, and nothing interesting had happened by the time the paladin guy was gutted by a spectral-sword wielder.

I mean, I don't think that this makes the writing bad? Prolonged exposure to the painting being bad for your health and even capable of killing you is something that is explained pretty consistently as soon as a you realize what that decision did to Maelle's mother. There's also the fact that allowing the painting to continue existing traps the last vestiges of Verso's consciousness (the real one, not the copy) in an I-must-scream scenario where he can't stop himself from maintaining the painting even as it eats up Maelle to sustain itself. Honestly I was surprised that the female main antagonist was shown to be wrong in her obsession, and that Maelle's inability to deal with her negative emotions was shown in a negative light. What annoys me is the yapping and story flubs on the way to the finale, but the finale itself was fairly well done. I just wish that it didn't hinge so much on Renoir or Clea just not telling everyone from the get-go that they're doomed: even if his wife and later daughter sacrifice themselves to maintain the painted world, sooner or later the painting will collapse because there are no more people whose lives it can drain. Letting the two stupid bints die to dream their lives away in la la land just delays the inevitable. The whole anti-escapism aesop has been done to death, but in this case it was actually pulled off fairly well in the story's context.

TL;DR: On balance I think it's a good if not great game. I consider it a major success as a debut title for the studio, though I'm a little concerned that they set their own bar quite high now.
