As for the combat system, initially I hated it because some of the early fights where you need to parry to win had truly bizarre animations and attack timings and it seemed extremely sloppy and jank.
I had a near zero parry/dodge rate on some enemies. That one enemy that does the rush attack, for example. My guess was it was bugged, because no matter what I did it never seemed to work.
I don't know what specific enemy you are talking about but there were never any that I couldn't avoid. There were a few with strange timing, but once I realized they had audio cues I never got hit by them again. Usually the more conventional attacks are parried visually, and the ones with ****** up animations or delay attacks have audio cues.

Dodge mechanics are gay. I want to play the game, not have the game play me.

And I beat Berzerker Khazan (and every other souls game) on the hardest difficulty, true ending, no summons, so it can't be said that I don't know how to ******* parry. Later on, the timing becomes more clear and the attack animations less stupid, and now I really like the combat.
Isn't the parry system just listening to audio cue while ignoring the visual jank?

Was the game's success due to it actually being good, or just because the women in it didn’t look ugly as sin? I’m not buying into the chud argument that most of the junk we see churned out today would instantly turn a profit if the female characters just looked like supermodels.

There is a slight audio cue, but you really have to listen for it, and sometimes the scene is too loud for it. The better way is to study the movement patterns and body language by dodging until you feel confident you can parry.

Finished Part 1. What difficulty are you playing on? I am playing mid/recommended. No need to block, dodge pretty easy. So far zero issues with combat other than its boring.

I'm on the same difficulty.

I go out of my way to avoid combat in this game. Shooting enemies in the exploration mode and dodging around them is way more interesting than the actual combat, which is saying something because the former is not that interesting at all.

The animations and VFX are cool, I guess.

Gave this another chance.

15 hours, somewhere in Act 2, and yeah, the game just isn't good.
Nice graphics and presentation, but everything gameplay is lacking; bad map design and layout (invisible walls everywhere included), boring overworld, clunky controls during exploration, trash mobs are super boring and repetitive, while some bosses are just ********, the playstyles of the characters are meh, and the initially interesting story soured on me as well.
Considering I found the premise of TB combat with QTEs appalling, I'm surprised I made it so far in.

I give it 4/10 for the graphics, presentation and effort.
If you like the combat, and can tolerate the negative aspects, it might be a 6, maybe a 7.

Invis walls irk me more than most things. Put some effort in. Either design the terrain accordingly or give me logical consequences depending on the context - like falling to my death, or being electrocuted from a fence.

All the effort went into the presentation, style and quantity instead of gameplay, substance and quality.

To fair there were plans to it a make movie before the game was released ,which really makes you wonder how much money was invested in the game.

Also why make a movie adaptation when you can just watch all the cutscenes in a YouTube video and get the same experience.

You are crazy. Everyone is saying that this tiny indie studio is humbling AAA devs and saving the gaming industry while revolutionizing the JRPG genre with the best JRPG in the past 2 decades. It's so good many people are saying that they were even planning a ******* MOVIE adaptation before release. It is that good.

I'm afraid there's nothing bugged—our reaction times have simply worsened. It's just as unforgiving as the action games we used to play in our youth: 80's 90's arcade games and platformers. Then came the mainstreaming and enshittification of gaming, and with that, demanding and unforgiving gameplay mostly disappeared—along with our habits.

That said, a good build can help bypass those issues. You can even take damage on purpose and stack bonuses like increased critical rate and damage when at low health, then use attacks that deal more damage the less HP you have. There are several viable ways to finish the game, which is rare enough these days to be worth mentioning.

I mean, wasn’t this supposed to be a surprise hit from some tiny, unknown indie studio? How many of those actually get their game turned into a movie—and this fast? Seriously?

The whole thing just feels off. The media hype, the glowing reviews, the massive marketing push, and now a movie deal? lmao, give me a break

Is it normal to fall in love with a fictional character? Is it "okay" to become attached to someone who doesn’t exist? ...Have you ever done so?

Let’s sail into into an ocean of psychological research and real life pandemonium regarding "fictophilia."

What a ***.

I don't know. I'm watching a playthrough and it's dreadfully boring so far. Will edit with further thoughts soon.

The expedition started. Slightly more interested now.

Gameplay started. Game looks visually nice. I'm enjoying the setting more now that we're out of the endless dialogue.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 lead writer says "chances are good" that the JRPG banger gets DLC at some point

It sounds like chances are pretty high that new JRPG darling Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is going to get DLC at some point, at least according to public Instagram messages from the game's lead writer, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen. As reported by Vice, Svedberg-Yen replied to Instagram messages from players asking about the potential for DLC, and what she said was highly encouraging. Svedberg-Yen made it very clear that there aren't any hard plans for DLC at the moment, but that the plan at developer Sandfall Interactive has always been to monitor the response to the game and base any potential plans for DLC off of that. And with the game receiving near universal acclaim from players and critics alike, with fantastic player numbers to boot, the inference is clear.

"Nothing concrete that I can say at the moment, we're honestly still just trying to process everything that’s happening," she said. "It's been a lot to take in! We’ve always said if there is strong desire from the players that we would love to do something more, and based on the response so far, I’d say chances are good."
