The legends are true. I heard about it this, but seeing it's actually a thing a business put in a video game is astounding.

The character creator was nowhere near as robust as I thought it would be. Can't change the body shape or height of your character, limited hairstyles, no facial muscle sliders, etc. It is also strange that the selection of male voices is very narrow. They all sound rather young and sedate. Now more energetic voices or deeper voices or older voices.

Shadowheart sounds cute. Just looking at screenshots before I played, I didn't see the appeal and what all the fuss was about with her.

I am surprised there was no option to talk to the winged demon commander during battle like in Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, Sakura Wars, etc. I thought it would have been possible to ally with him/play him against the evil tentacles, and then turn against him.

So far I am not seeing the wow factor.

Meeting Gale, the mo-cap animations are neat.

It is odd how movie like the cutscenes are, but you click a dialogue option and your character doesn't speak them.

I went into the chapel dungeon, and the way the combats play out just feels counterintuitive. It seems to be going for that realistic sim thing, so for the bandits on the top and then for the skeletons below, I tried setting up behind a chokepoint like a door way with my three melees (my fighter main character, La'zel, and Shadowheart) with Gale behind them to cast the thunder magic (which thankfully doesn't hit my guys, the wording made it sound like it would hit "everyone"). But then I am waiting for enemies to come through my chokepoint and get meleed, but instead they instead stop at mid range and throw rocks or grenades in rather than coming in, so now I have to go out the door to melee them. So I should have just rushed them in the first place.

It is odd how spears do not seem to give you more melee range.

It is jarring how there are such movie like cutscenes when talking to characters, but then for combat your camera is looking down at little characters and they hit like weak noodles and the combat feels so flaccid. Even when trying to zoom in as close as possible, it feels bad. They really should have done closeup shots of the action.

The music has been forgettable.

I found some medium sized heavy locked chests but ran out of lockpicks, but apparently I can put them into Le'zel's inventory until I get some more picks and she can run around unencumbered? What?

I have just met Astarion, and now he's telling me to kick someone out of the party for him to join. But I only have a pitiful 3 party member slots besides the main character. Why is the party size 4? That is insanely small. Why can't I have 5 or 6 characters? And then none of these characters seem particularly cool or appealing to me. Which BG3 party members are generally regarded as the best story wise? I wonder if I should install that mod that just plays all party member cutscenes regardless of whether or not they are in your party.

The prologue was much longer at one point in early access, it was heavily cut down. Not sure why.

Encumbrance was also removed at some point during early access

To be fair, it was also obviated because you can just go to your camp at any time, which is silly.

Also agree that the default tactical combat camera is a strange choice when they spent so much effort on graphical fidelity/cinematic feel. You can do turn-based in a closer third-person perspective just fine. I'd probably point the blame for that at for the game becoming much more cinematic as development went on, I guess.

IMO optimal way to play is with the mod that enables WASD movement and a very close third-person camera.

I am using the generally recommended mods I have seen pop up here.
  • NoAlphabets
  • RealmsRestored 80% crowds
  • RR DeGirlboss
  • Dignify
  • Wylls of Baldurs Gate (I picked the black version, making him look like a better more handsome version of the character)
  • Really Shadowheart
  • Shadowheart Tweaked
  • BetterRomance (not sure I want to even engage with this system in this game tbh)
  • Narrator Mortanius
  • Immersive Loading Screens
It was weird that I had to first start a game and create a character, and then save during the first inengine cutscene and exit the game and then install the mods. It is nice that you can save and load during cutscenes like in an emulator.

hmm

depends

if you are attracted to wyll and want to replace him with a woman to degay it i would say it still is gay
if you found a mod and thought the chick is hot and chose to sacrifice the token negro and the mod also adjust voice and dialoque so everything makes it a female character then i would say it is not gay.

Which BG3 party members are generally regarded as the best story wise? I wonder if I should install that mod that just plays all party member cutscenes regardless of whether or not they are in your party.
They are all really bad.

Lae'zel shows a change after you earn enough friendship points with her and while still brutally honest and abrasive, is nevertheless loyal to you. I hated her sassy attitude in the beginning but ended up really liking her by the end. Specially because she is the only one of the party members that doesn't have a secret that she is hiding from you. She is just an earnest githyanki warrior trying to remove the tadpole to stay alive as per the knowledge she has due to her upbringing. I wouldn't call her "great" but certainly was the best of the bunch who all keep trying to "one up" each other with their snowflake main character syndrome.

Gale is alright, if a little bit pretentious. If you use the mod that makes him straight (which everyone should) then he shouldn't be a degenerate houndog salivating for your hide and should just be a nice wizard pal.

Wyll is alright if you use the Wyll's of Toril mod to make him a Baldurian instead of a ******. He is kind of a poser but at least he is genuinely heroic in the sense that he tries to do the right thing unlike the other edgelords in your party.

Shadowheart is an emo goth all the way to the very end until you finish her personal quest, then she mellows out but its not really worth all the hassle. She is not bloodthirsty like Astarion so if you are playing a heroic character you can bring her along without having to suffer her nagging too much. Just never push her on her secrets and let her keep the facade and she won't dislike you/***** too much.

Karlach is a straight up redditor. Talks like one too. She has a good melee class, but so does Lae'zel and Lae'zel is considerably less insufferable. Karlach's one good trait is that she is also heroic so she won't be bitching if you are not an evil murder hobo. That's it. It's her only redeeming feature. If you can tolerate the word choices she uses, are playing a heroic character and are looking for another melee character besides Lae'zel, then I guess she is alright.

Astarion is a ****** and as a vampire that tried to feast on my character, he got stake in the heart just like all filthy bloodsuckers deserve, as Lathander intended. From what I've read he is really evil, emo and pretentious. Some find his humor hilarious but I just don't fraternize with evil monsters.

Halsin is just as much of a horndog as Gale, if not more so. Make sure to get that mod or else he is insurable. With the mod, he is somewhat boring with nothing really interesting to add or say. Once you learn that he was only added as a companion due to crazy fujoshi fans wanted him to bear rape them, it all makes sense. I guess he is inoffensive enough.

Jaheira is just as bossy and naggy as she was in BG 1 and 2. I don't particularly care for her that much. I am one of those few that actually liked Khalid and was sad to see him so unceremoniously disposed in BG2.

Minsc is a caricature of the original and Matt Merzer does a parody impression of Jim Cummings. If original Minsc was seasons 1 to 9 Homer Simpson, then BG3 Minsc is late season Homer Simpson, completely flanderized without all the nuance his character once had.

I am being extremely charitable here, I still stand by my statement that they are all really bad but if you decide to engage with the game's companions on the game's terms, then those three, in that order and with those mods, are decent enough. Also, there's a way to have a party of 6 like in the original BG games but it really destroys the difficulty curve, even playing on Tactician.

In terms of "story" content:
► Show Spoiler
All in all, I don't really think any character is crucial to the plot so bring whoever you like best or whoever has the class features that better suit your party composition.

The character you kick out just goes to your camp, you can get them whenever.

I liked all of the companions except for Karlach. Any of them work for the story. Although Shadowheart seems more tied to the plot than the others at the start because of the quest item that she carries.

The music's dope, but to each their own.

That's a very bad reason. One that implies there is something inherently thoughtful or significant about his race, rather than it simply being about checking a box on a formal identity politics diversity checklist. I would understand if you had no other choice, but to voluntarily agree to such propaganda in your game is...well, to each his own, I suppose

It is frustrating that there doesn't seem to be a way to talk to or knock out characters during combat and then talk to them after. Once combat begins, the only way to deal with them is to kill them. This guy entrusted me with his people and I am trying not to get them killed. I wound having to reload and tell them to go away.
You can knock out characters during combat, FYI. There's a toggle somewhere to deal non-lethal damage, and most of the quests account for this. Probably more than when I played at release.
