What's the opinions on bad controls that are purposely designed to be bad for a reason?

Example? There's a difference between bad and unchangeable bindings (terrible) and input-response mechanics that have some quirks. For example, my friend hated the way jumps from standing and jumps from moving are very different in Bunny Must Die and considered it "bad controls", but it was clearly a mechanic that rewarded skillfully choosing between the two, and I enjoyed it.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ December 10th, 2024, 23:58What's the opinions on bad controls that are purposely designed to be bad for a reason?

I can't think of a game I've played with true tank controls, but, in general, I think there's some room for considering controls to be part of the difficulty. I know I've seen people recommend against using emulator mods to play the Metroid Prime series with mouse and keyboard because it renders the games, which were designed for controller, far too easy.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ December 11th, 2024, 03:19tank controlsWhiteShark wrote: ↑ December 11th, 2024, 03:03Example? As someone who played Metroid Prime 1+2 recently on M+KB, I can confirm this is 100% true. Despite the fact I was playing on the highest difficulty, I had no trouble with my playthrough even on bosses that gave me trouble in previous playthroughs like Omega Pirate or Alpha Blogg (the underwater boss before you get the Gravity Suit). It got to the point where I didn't use the lock-on except to activate certain weapons/utilities. The game was clearly designed for the more rigid aiming controls of a single joystick controller and it seems they slowed down enemies' attacks and evasive movements to compensate for that fact.WhiteShark wrote: ↑ December 11th, 2024, 03:34I can't think of a game I've played with true tank controls, but, in general, I think there's some room for considering controls to be part of the difficulty. For those that don't know, the lock-on in the Gamecube version was essential to properly aim and kill even the most basic enemies especially while platforming. This is mainly due to the fact that both aiming and looking around are tied to the same joystick. The aim cursor is always tied to the center of the screen when you aren't using lock-on so in order to aim without lock-on, you would need to constantly change your field of view to face the center of whatever you need to aim at. Even if you went out of your way to customize the cursor sensitivity to compensate for the lack of lock-on, the aim with the Gamecube controller is so stiff that you would have no way to react in time to dodge attacks or hit enemies during their weak/vulnerable phases especially if you are facing multiple enemies/obstacles at once.

Games Journalism is like fewer than 40 people now. Magazines are basically gone and websites are close behind them. None of this is a surprise to me, but it's incredibly sad. We had something awesome for a while there. Younger generations have no idea what they missed out on.
Patreons for known personalities can only get us so far. YouTube is harder than ever to break into & streaming is having it's own reckoning. My hope is there's a revolution around the corner, but we could be going the way of the music industry. Consolidated, killed, salted earth.
It’s cute that the anti-woke crowd are doing a victory lap with my original post. But pinning it on progressivism is self-serving ********. Like most things it’s far more complex than that. I’m glad I got to be part of it for a moment. But I too jumped ship once I saw the iceberg
I’m also not gonna sit here and say that games journalism didn’t get worse - I think largely standards did drop. But it’s because there was hardly any seniority / mentorship. Nobody could work for the wages past their 20s. Sadly aside from those in management positions.

I’m already seeing it. Honestly it was bound to happen eventually after Trump winning the second term of his presidency."To be united by hatred, is a fragile alliance at best"
And that means it reflects the views of the majority and objectively true. When as self-proclaimed “game journalists” write either into the void, or for other equally stupid game journalists. They completely out of touch with their audience, reality and literally being a useless oxygen thieves and ******-minority with absurd ideology. We don't need them. Even more, they are infiltrators and tourists who need to be laughed at and exposed, which is what the good people on YouTube do. Democracy works. The “by the people and for the people” approach works. That's why the woke parasites will never win.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ December 11th, 2024, 20:44average "woke games bad" youtube video gets 2 billion viewsRoguey wrote: ↑ December 11th, 2024, 20:41It’s cute that the anti-woke crowd are doing a victory lap with my original post. Video game magazines back in the day were awesome but I don't think the "journalist" today could read some of those magazines and not get triggered. They were pretty edgy sometimes and other times they just focused on telling you if a game was good or not instead of political grandstanding. But we can't go back so I'm glad video games journalism won't be around anymore and I'll be celebrating when the last one gets fired.

https://www.gamesradar.com/games/in-an- ... iler-spot/The Game Awards for Games Who Can't Afford the Game Awards is such a lovely name for a showcase because it instantly tells you what to expect and it kind of takes aim at the three-hour marketing nightmare that is Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards.
The Game Awards for Games Who Can't Afford the Game Awards (TGAGWCAGAs) will instead air tomorrow, December 13 on YouTube, to spotlight more than 70 indie games of all different genres. The show will be split between brand-new reveals for upcoming indie games and funny, hyper-specific awards for games that came out this year like the 'Most Likely to Make You Quit Your Job and Become an Artist' award.
Organizers Pengonauts Studio explained that the show was setup as a "last-minute" idea to promote its own game and to sidestep the big marketing budgets that the industry often demands. Most developers can't get a trailer to air during The Game Awards without handing over the big bucks - Gamescom ONL fees were reportedly $127,000, for reference - drowning out countless interesting but smaller games. In that sense, the TGAGWCAGAs are pretty much a natural extension of that social media trend that decried purportedly astronomically-priced trailer spots.
After posting on social media, Pengonauts' Hansen Liu thought they'd maybe attract the attention of 15 other games. "But within days, we had nearly 600 submissions," he said. "It was clear that the indie scene was looking for more opportunities to showcase their work."
The confirmed line-up includes strategy-deckbuilding hybrid As We Descend, pussycat parkour party game Jumping Jazz Cats, above-the-clouds survival sandbox ALOFT, and Pengonauts' very own mecha roguelike StarVaders, which jumped onto our radar thanks to a tip from Balatro's creator, plus more surprises.

People say "go play indie" when the average indie game is gayer, worse designed, and more boring than the average AAA slop
