Chrono Trigger's new game plus does have unlocks. The additional endings are only accessible through new game plus since you can go to fight Lavos at any time now. The timing on when you do this, determines the extra endings you get.

I wouldn't count it as "unlocks" if it wasn't because most of the additional endings cannot be achieved without this.
Yes, it does have multiple endings, but I'm pretty sure they're technically available even in the standard playthrough. Theoretically, you could beat Lavos in any of those spots. It's just that you don't have the character power to do it in a nermal game. The one exception I can't recall off the top of my head is the gate to Lavos that's available after the teleportation demo at the beginning of the game. I can't remember if it's open in the standard game or only appears in NG+.

Hence, NG+ in Chrono Trigger doesn't "unlock" additional endings (they're already there). It just makes it so you have the power to win the fights.

No. Only through the bucket of time and on the first fight in the Kingdom of Zeal can you beat Lavos "before you are meant to" on a first playthrough.

For example, beating Lavos alone with Crono is impossible unless you are on a NG+ since that gate doesn't exist and by the time you reach the End of Time to use the bucket, you have a full party.

You can also beat the game before saving Queen Leene on the first quest, which makes it so Frog saves her alone and then marries her, leading to a funny and silly ending where Marle now becomes a frog-human hybrid. Such ending cannot be achieved unless you are on NG+.

Like I said, out of the 13 or so endings, most of them require NG+ and that's why I do count them as unlocks.
