I remember when Super Mario Run first came out and I remember people were whining about the $10 price tag attached to that game. Just one $10 fee, and you got to access every part of the game with plenty of updates. In fact, the game was updated as late as 2023 when the movie was released. Now I haven't played it myself in a long time, but I know it's a simple and fun game, and probably the best 2D Mario in recent memory.

Unfortunately, it's business model was apparently so unpopular, that Nintendo just ended up copying the model every other predatory mobile phone game uses. Now that $10 became hundreds, if not thousands, in order to access every feature or skin. How different would mobile gaming have been, if it had a more traditional buy-to-play model, with devs making the types of games we used to get on the DS/3DS/PSP?. It's been so bad, for so long, you'd think some regulatory body would see how blatantly corrupt it all is and ban freemium models entirely.

Perhaps when phone games first rose to prominence I felt a bit of concern that I would miss out on something, but now I am fine with the situation and I think it's a good thing that:
a) It can serve as a containment zone to differentiate "people who like time-wasting activities but don't really want to play a game" from "gamers"
b) Dumb people are being parted from their money because they probably would have spent it on something that negatively affects me even more

The UK needs to be excised from the West until their lefties and pakis are gone. The only intelligent thing this country did was the Brexit referendum, and that was only political theater that went horribly wrong from the viewpoint of both Tories and Labour.

@Val the Moofia Boss How is your Honkai: Star Rail review doing?
I posted it in the review submission subforum a month ago. Nobody has really commented on it or vetoed it, so I guess I could just ask Rusty to publish it, but overall I have been a little hesitant because it is very long. But it's long because I went thoroughly into detail and don't think I can cut stuff, because it's supposed to serve it's job as a review so people know what they are getting into or can learn what was good or bad about the game without having to sink hundreds of hours into it. I haven't added the things you suggested yet.

Another reason why I have held off is because just as I finished the Aquilia fight in 3.3, the Trails in the Sky remake came out. I will probably beat that today and then begin a review of it, and then get back to HSR. I have a lot of good things about the 3.4 and 3.6 story so I am wondering if I should incorporate that into my review, but then again it's the FF14 issue where you have to slog through hundreds of hours of mediocre to get to a moment or two of "good". I also hesitant to publish it because patch 3.7 releases next month, which will conclude the Amphoreus story and introduce the fifth endgame mode, Currency Wars.

We are also getting leaks about the Edo Star 4.X character releases, and it is sounding like Hoyo is going to double down on selling two spectacularly animated characters and then designing their kits to have such narrow synergies that you are strongly incentivized to pull their new BiS supports rather than just pulling for characters you like. That latter part is already in my review but in light of this new info I feel that I should emphasize it more somehow.

Japanese handheld devs and the few surviving VN devs transitioned to making these mobile gacha games because it was the only way for them to survive. Some of them managed to make enough money from these gacha games that they can afford to lavish money on vanity box purchase games (ie Typemoon making enough money from FGO to subsidize development of Fate/Samurai Remnant, Cygames with Granblue Fantasy to make Granblue Fantasy Relink, etc).

Mihoyo's first game was buy to play. The first ever Honkai game. But they were burnt by rampant piracy in China which caused it to flop, and forced them to make the Honkai sequels as live service games to stay afloat. Reportedly, now that they have the extremely successful Genshin and HSR keeping them afloat, they now have box purchase games in development. A job posting for someone to head the marketing campaign for it in the West was posted it recently.

It requires a ton of grinding, has lots of horribly obscured mechanics, and a punishing gacha system. I quit after playing for a couple weeks.

The combat is pretty good though.

Chaos Zero Nightmare just released. I've never played Epic Seven but it's by the same devs.

The setting is Humanity lost Earth to reality-bending unspeakable nightmarish horrors and now our spaceship society tries to do recon with small task forces that pray they don't get slaughtered as soon as they set foot on the ground.
Setting trailers:

Gameplay is a turn-based roguelike deckbuilder. Kinda sick of these tbh, but I should say I've played a lot of them in the past. Guess it has a sanity meter like Darkest Dungeon's, that's cool.
Gameplay trailers:

I'll give it a try to see what they cook up with this setting :popcorn2:

Playing Gailardia Trilogy right now. The first is a fun little DW2-alike, with just as much grind requirement and danger. I've spent thousands on rezzes at this point, although no TPKs yet :D

I suspect the second will ape DW3-4, which is right up my alley. I'll try to remember to report back.

The game description says it should, but I haven't had any so far in about 6 hours of playing.

Maybe they got disabled? Not sure.

Been playing it since release. Its pretty fun, Im enjoying the combat a whole lot, Im liking the aesthetics, particularly while in combat or exploration.

Its a proper roguelite. The story is alright, nothing too deep so far, but its only really had time to introduce the world and some of the characters. Literally every playable character is ****** in the head and their traumas can resurface if they get too stressed.

Best I can point you to is Fate Grand Order, which is summoning historical figures from the past to fight for you. :wizard: That's pretty magical so I'm not sure if that's what you want in your historical gacha

***** history is all fantasy for the most part, they arent too fond of "events as transpired", because of how humilliating the whole thing is to them. I think its why the white man loves history, a lot of winning and vindication there.

Looks like Mihoyo is putting their gacha billions to use and is making a themepark. What do you think the rides and attractions will be? A Mondstadt or a Penacony area? A dark ride through the fall of Khaenri'ah or Dottre's dark magic laboratory or a Luofu vs Borisin battle? A giant Sumeru tree? Maybe they will do something like Florida Walt Disney World's animal kingdom with a hybrid zoo and Natlan Saurian park.

New Arknights Endfield trailer released. Not a fan of how they made the Hellagur clone look like yet another young beautiful 20 something.

Hellagur in Arknights.

Image

His expy Pogranichnik in Endfield:

Image

It's neat that his ultimate allows him to summon the spirits of Rhodes Island soldiers.

Endfield banners: you get a six star within 80 pulls, and the featured banner character within 120. After a limited banner ends, the featured character does not immediately become unavailable, but instead can be one of the other two characters that can be pulled on the limited banner besides the featured character. So every limited character will appear on 3 banners in a row before being bumped off and becoming unavailable.

Beta test 2 begins on November 28th
