If you could play one cancelled game

Post by Element »

What would it be? The game would be made playable in a 'finished' state, one in which it would have hypothetically shipped had it been completed.

Off the top of my head, the games that come to mind:

Fallout van Buren
Arcanum: Journey to the centre of the Earth
Silent Hill 5

A shame they couldn't work in 'Fomorians' into the name as well somehow

Blizzard's superhero MMO (referred to fans as "Project Titan"). From the vision described at Blizzcon, the player would work a day job like being a blacksmith, and then at night dons his disguise and goes out to do superhero stuff. Would have been interesting to try out given that non-violent activities like crafting in MMOs are usually not engaging and amount to tedious menuing, and presumably more work would have gone in here to make the day half just as fun to play as the night half. Maybe crafting would have been like making potions or sharpening swords in KCD? Unfortunately the game languished in development hell for years and people got demoralized working on a game that never released, never being able to show off their work, so talent began leaving the company. Eventually Blizzard decided to cut their losses and reused some of the art for Overwatch.

Initial Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts version without the cars.
Clive Barker's Undying 2, PT. Warcraft 4 if there ever were plans.

Some of the sequel ideas Troika had for VTMB2 sounded interesting.
Of course there's the obvious Prey 2 as well.

Played starcraft ghost when the swinging ape build was leaked. It even has a codex that none of the shills on youtube ever cared to document accessible by pressing a random button on the D-pad.

Can see why it was canned but given how WoW was still popular well into SC2's lifespan, "last gen graphics" wasn't an excuse. It was still fun enough. It just needed 1. Better thirdperson weapon animations than having nova's arm bent way back in a position no one would ever handle a rifle like. 2. more vantage points to attack zerg at range. Since almost all encounters are within close-mid range. It was basically like a cartoony version of splinter cell.

The story of ghosts was completely recycled into the tosh vs nova plotline of SC2 wings of liberty and the ghost academy comic. The in game codex explains the plot was entirely about stopping the terran spectres from being created and sabotaging terrazine supply lines with Tosh being the main antagonist. Even has Spectres in a SC1 outline artsyle and half of the codex entries crash the game at random and even has some prototype versions of units that were later added to SC2 like the thor and helion. The in game story that was actually implemented was forgettable and there were no actual protoss enemies or levels in that build.

"The Punisher" (2005) was a good game, at least good enough to be commercially sucessful that apparently Volition had planned to make a sequel with semi-open world, and it never happen. They went on to make Saints Row that borrowed a lot of code from it but the premise was entirely different obviously.

It's almost kinda funny how both Volition and Punisher were irredeemably ruined into the ground by woke cretins in the last couple of years.

It's been said, but definitely Fallout 3 by Black Isle (codename: Van Buren, not the slop one from those retards at Bethesda).
