What's odd is the older I get, I the more I disagree with this statement. Either I've just become cynical (possible) or it's just one of those **** phrases people keep repeating because some philosophy-*** said it once.Anon wrote: β March 16th, 2024, 23:30Attributing to malice what can be attributed to incompetence is often wrongMondain wrote: β March 16th, 2024, 14:08I remember reading a post saying that games keep getting bigger to prevent customers from installing competing games.
You cannot reason a person out of a position he did not reason himself into in the first place.
It's the opposite for me. Experience is subjective, obviously. And I agree it's kinda philosophy-***-ish, but in my experience it's true in most cases, people who fucks things up are simply ******** as Vergil said, the truly malicious and evil are a minority that's severely augmented by social media.OnTilt wrote: β March 16th, 2024, 23:55What's odd is the older I get, I the more I disagree with this statement. Is competition a form of malice?Anon wrote: β March 16th, 2024, 23:30Attributing to malice what can be attributed to incompetence is often wrongMondain wrote: β March 16th, 2024, 14:08I remember reading a post saying that games keep getting bigger to prevent customers from installing competing games.
For SaaS livegames, keeping your competitor's game off your customer's computer through any means possible is a form of dominance. It might have even originally happened accidentally but was a winning strategy, a successful evolutionary mutation if you will.
It doesn't apply much to games like BG3, but to SaaS games that have to maintain market dominance or quickly spiral into decline? I'm sure they put a lot of money into researching how to stay on top.
This goes back to my post on violence in the controversial opinions thread. Video games are, for whatever reason, given the kid gloves when it comes to things that we'd entirely agree may be possible with more mature industries. This is despite video games being the biggest entertainment juggernaut industry in the world, despite us knowing that many large publishers employ psychologists to help design addictive video games that abuse human behavior, despite us seeing things like leaked emails from Epic showing how underhanded and shady the gaming industry is, and so forth.

On a more niche topic but still related to secret gaming industry ploys, I'm really into local multiplayer games and from decades of closely following how the situation evolved I guarantee there are secret agreements between platform owners and developers to limit local gaming in order to either favor one platform (usually consoles) and/or (often simultaneously) boost sales through online multiplayer only.
The thing is, just as with the optimization issue, if you protest it 90% of players will berate you and repeat ad nauseam it's "too much ressources" for a niche feature. No matter if said feature exists on consoles but was scrapped specifically for PC (high occurrence), or used to exist historically in an IP that mysteriously scraps it in it's new iterations.
Even in instances players reckon that's a possibility, the "I don't use it so I don't care" individualistic consumer mindset prevails. Sometimes ironically until the same people have kids and it suddenly affects them.
Actually, the new DBZ fighting game is currently going through something like this. Dev seems to want to add local multiplayer as they've always have but claim Sony and Microsoft are being difficult about it, claiming "technical difficulties".
If your 600$ console has trouble running a DBZ fighting game locally, I say there's something wrong with your overpriced hardware. This or you simply want your huge historical fanbase to move with the times and start buying more or your **** like everyone else.

Point is that, but to begin with, this point is kinda fragile. Is there any kind of evidence that a bigger game works for preventing people from acquiring other products, more than it being detrimental for your own product? (that is, people choosing not to acquire your game because it's too big and he couldn't have anything else in his SSD).rusty_shackleford wrote: β March 17th, 2024, 06:43Is competition a form of malice?Anon wrote: β March 16th, 2024, 23:30Attributing to malice what can be attributed to incompetence is often wrongMondain wrote: β March 16th, 2024, 14:08I remember reading a post saying that games keep getting bigger to prevent customers from installing competing games.

Competition can have a malicious aspect if you're resorting to underhanded, harmful/detrimental methods for your customers to get an edge over your competitors. Good, beneficial competition should mean bettering your product to achieve that.
Do the ****** really comb through each BG3 employee twitter profile? **** me (figuratively speaking, go away @Slavic Sorcerer ).

I think it can be layers of both as well depending on the circumstance. Seen lots of managers make malicious decisions to self promote that produced incompetency in the execution of their directions. The confusion may be the point though. If it were easily identified, this would create a target for remedy. So by spreading out through layers of intent and execution, people never fully know if it is a conspiracy, or just stupid people making stupid decisions.

As for combing - it's been a practice since the dawn of Tumblr Exodus. We just started to pay attention to it the more effective said combing was at ruining careers

True but combing used to happen when there was something "suspicious" or you wanted to destroy that guy specifically. Nowadays everybody who has a minimally public life gets completely combed for no reason at all.Slavic Sorcerer wrote: β March 18th, 2024, 17:19As for combing - it's been a practice since the dawn of Tumblr Exodus. Just remembered a quest where it marks the exact precise location of some hidden treasure on your map. My guys failed the perception roll when I walked up to it and the quest just stayed in my journal for the rest of the game. **** you!

It is funny how inconsequential he really ends up being. Very easy to just not interact with him at all after his ***** little try hard intro fighting the goblins. Not even present when you raid the grove. Probably hiding somewhere eating watermelon or something. you know, I find Neil Newbon to be kind of insufferable despite being a diehard Astarion fan, and if I had the modding capability I would absolutely make a transphobic & bigoted Astarion mod. Neil would probably find a way to sue anyone who did it. I find it hilarious that so many twitter gendies love Astarion to pieces but completely ignore the fact that he's an evil white politician who was beaten to death for being a racist. in canon. you know, the thing that these twitter dweebs claim to support.
"punch a Nazi unless he's a hot elf with baggage"
Astarion haters can call him gay as much as they want to, but I personally would find it marvelous if he retained his exact personality but was also a properly "evil" companion spitting obscenities that would make his liberal fans shrivel up into raisins. Make him meaner.
