The "gateway to troonery" only seems to go for games where you play as a CUSTOM female character. Where men can sit and design their "ideal female self". OR CHOOSE to play as a female MC (where the male/female choice is available). I see no reason to choose to play as a female MC as a man if there is zero difference in the story & gameplay, and no the "can't bear to stare at a man's ***" is a silly argument and stems from insecurity.

Regardless, I don't think fixed female MC's cause troonery, as long as there's no pandering to the "feminine" aspects (if targeted at a male audience). It just doesn't make sense. Playing Perfect Dark etc. it was never "I am now a woman", it was just about playing the **** game. I identified with Joanna Dark no more then I did Pierce Brosnan as James Bond in Goldeneye..

Now games where I make my OWN character (such as Mass Effect), that's another thing altogether. I usually do make chars that look like myself so that's absolutely "self-inserting" there. If I chose to make & design a female char and made that an idealised feminine version of myself then that would absolutely be knocking on the door to troonery. More modern games than older ones employ that ability to design your own. My theory is a lot of it stems from that.

Honestly, games like Tomb Raider were released in the mid 90s, long before ****** started being commonplace in the 2010s. We've had games like Dead or Alive, King of Fighters, Street Fighter, Metroid, where the female leads are attractive and appealing to male players.
