Have any of you played Dark Earth(1997)?

Post by rusty_shackleford »

I've only recently found out about this game somehow, and it seems nobody I've asked has played it. I'm really not sure why, because it seems great. What's the quick rundown on this?
Dark Earth takes place several centuries in the future, when a meteor collision with Earth (referred to as the "Great Cataclysm") has thrown up great clouds of ash and dust, blocking out the light of the sun. Those not killed in the collision were soon hunted by strange creatures of darkness, and so they began to seek a refuge from the "Dark Earth" - pockets of land where the light of the sun breached the clouds. Eventually they found such places. Called "Stallites", these places of light became cities, and the survivors built temples in honor of the light. The game is set in a Stallite called Sparta.

By the time of the game, many centuries after the establishment of Sparta, most of the citizens have forgotten their history and now worship the light as a god, Solaar. The city is run by Sunseers, priests of Solaar, who maintain order and prevent the creatures of darkness from entering the city limits. The game focuses on Arkhan, a "Guardian of Fire", one of the military protectors of the city.

Apparently it sold almost zero copies in USA due to last minute publisher shenanigans, so that might explain why nobody I talk to has played it.

I did play it. I didn't necessarily understood it or managed to complete it

It's hard af, I remember getting hopelessly stuck and having to restart over and over and over and ultimately giving up. Incredibly ambitious title, no handolding (like it used to be back then), you're supposed to uncover everything yourself, the setting and characters BLATANTLY lie in your face (betraying your expectations, if you naively follow instructions) and the world has a noticeable reactivity.

This is pretty much what made me think this should be a cult classic but it seems almost completely ignored.

Can't believe Vince stole all his ideas for AoD from this game.

It actually reminds me a good bit of Arx Fatalis in a way, which given they're both made by French studios, perhaps there's a link there.

Imagine this playing out today by a major development team / publisher.

In a era where Square Enix can sell 10 billion copies and see that as a commercial failure.. imagine releasing a game and selling 1 or 2 copies.

I'll definitely give it a try sometime.

It seems to imply that it originated from tabletop, but that's not true. The tabletop game originated from the video game.

It has come to my attention that some of the European versions had an *ahem* different game cover.

Presumably they picked the cover that would sell the best in each region. Therefore,

Well the collection chamber bundle installs via porting kit but the emulator crashes on startup. Not quite sure what to do about that.

OK, this game is a pain to get installed and running correctly, so I spent my afternoon creating a pre-packaged version that just works.

Pre-installed Dark Earth with DgVoodoo libraries included. Should be patched to 1.1 + has all CD files included + NoCD patch. You can change settings in dgVoodooCpl.exe for various grafx options.
If you're using wine on lunix, you need to install dxvk via winetricks and add overrides for d3dimm ddraw dd8 via winecfg for it to properly use dgvoodoo

Just run dkev.exe to play the game.

This is NOT the same as the one provided by 'collection chamber', it appears to use dosbox + Win95 to run the game. This should run it as a native 32-bit binary.
Would strongly suggest reading the manual, the options doesn't even have text, just icons.

https://f.rpghq.org/1rcddFhYpHGi.zip?n=DKE.zip
I claim no ownership of these files, I am merely providing them because they have been abandoned by their owner. If the owner wishes them to be removed, please contact me and I will do so.

****, this actually does just work. Works on mac via porting kit too after you dismiss all the security warnings about two .dll files for some reason. Thanks rusty!

How bout we make this the next adventurer's guild game?

The zip file itself is too big to scan with VirusTotal so I removed the game data and scanned the DLLs/executables. If you get a virus warning, presumably it's a false positive, as only 2/61 scanners picked anything up.
https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/5a4 ... /detection

Strangely enough, it's actually the DgVoodoo files triggering it. Presumably it's because of the DLL hooking dgvoodoo uses.

[edit2]
You really should be running random stuff you download off the internet in a sandbox anyways tho. I use firejail on lunix. Does windowz have something similar?

Correction, it doesn't quite just work, I'm getting this error when trying to save in the starting location:

I have no idea what this means.

Without the overrides it will fall back to wine's implementation of ddraw(d3dimm too? I don't know what version that was added), which tends to be pretty ****, rather than using dgvoodoo(dx5 -> dx11) -> dxvk

Also, before someone asks, there is no good way to play this in non-4:3 resolutions. All the backgrounds are pre-rendered β€” there is nothing else for it to show other than what is already being shown. All you're gonna do is stretch it:

Reproduced it by removing my overrides for dgvoodoo, definitely the cause of the error.

Adding the ddraw override prevents the game from launching for some reason.

Delete the d3dimm.dll ddraw.dll and d3d8.dll from the directory and try using this instead
https://github.com/FunkyFr3sh/cnc-ddraw ... g/v6.0.0.0

download 'cnc-ddraw.zip' and extract it to the directory, keep your override for ddraw.dll.

I just tried it out with only a ddraw override and it worked fine. Regret bundling dgvoodoo over this tbh, but I don't know if it helps on windowz.

Tried it last night. Quite intriguing. A pretty in depth combat system for what appears to be an adventure game, with different weapons having different attack animations. It seems to have the ME paragon vs renegade system via the 'mood' toggle where you can set your character to have a foul mood and have that be reflected in the dialogue and in the interactions. Will report more if I find the time to play it.

Brother, I'm living on a dark earth right now.
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?
